Barclays & Barclaycard send letters offering a refund

UPDATE Spring 2024

Barclays is sending people some “NOSIA” letters – because Barclays failed to send you a Notice of Sums In Arrears letter and because of that it is refunding interest after the date the letter should have been sent.

The Response Form can be found here https://www.barclays.co.uk/help/remediation/orf/ – that is a genuine page. It says some people may need to send a picture of the first page of their bank account statement and photo id.

If you have any difficulty, eg you can’t complete the form and can’t get an answer from the helpline, then send a complaint to wandim.execcomplaints@barclays.com

UPDATE 2020
In mid-2020, Barclaycard started sending a letter to some customers saying where they may have had raised their credit limit too high.
See Barclaycard credit limit letters for details.

In 2018 Barclays started a major refund program to customers with overdrafts, loans or credit cards who had been charged interest when Barclays knew they were in financial difficulty.

The Arrears assistance review page on Barclays website says:

After a careful review, we found that from October 2013, we didn’t always provide the service we should have to some customers who were over their borrowing limit or behind in their loan or card payments.

We’re sorry and we want to make things right, so we’re returning interest and charges to those who might have been affected during this time.

Picture of a Barclays branch in London - in 2018 Barclays is refunding hundreds of thousands of customers

What is the refund for?

The accounts affected include overdrafts, loans, Barclaycard accounts (including previous Egg card accounts) and Partner Finance accounts eg for car finance.

From what customers are being told when they ask, it seems Barclays now recognises that it did not properly assess customer circumstances when it knew they were in difficulties.

The Helpline says that Barclays has “been working collaboratively” with their regulator, the Financial Conduct Authority, about these refunds. The FCA’s rules say:

CONC 7.3.4 A firm must treat customers in default or in arrears difficulties with forbearance and due consideration.

CONC 7.3.5 Examples of treating a customer with forbearance would include …
(1) considering suspending, reducing, waiving or cancelling any further interest or charges (for example, when a customer provides evidence of financial difficulties and is unable to meet repayments as they fall due or is only able to make token repayments

The most common reason customers are being given for the refund or write off is that they are getting back interest and extra charges that Barclays now feels it should not have been added.

How many people are getting these refunds?

Barclays hasn’t said how many people are going to be refunded. However the review was originally mentioned on their website homepage so it must be large!

The first refunds started going out in March 2018 – initially these were low numbers.

A lot more refunds letters have been sent out in November and December 2018 – these mostly relate to Barclaycard accounts. Here are a couple of examples from readers – you can see these and other comments at the bottom of this page:

I received a letter offering £75 as an inconvenience payment and advising they are closing the account and I do not need to make any further payments. The balance is approximately £7,500! I can’t quite believe it.

I have had the same letter. £75 inconvenience payment and closure of the account. I was unwell in 2013 and required a period of time in residential care. I had around 5k owing on a Barclaycard.

One person was told by customer services that they were sending out 35,000 refund letters a week.

That suggests to me that Barclays is probably refunding hundreds of thousands of people.

The refund is automatic

You don’t have to put in a complaint or a request for a refund. Barclays will be contacting the people affected directly.

If you have moved and changed your phone, or you don’t think Barclays ever had your mobile number, Barclays may have difficulty contacting you. You may want to call them on 0800 328 6932 and give your new contact information.

Worried this is a scam?

Many people may be worried that a text or letter saying your bank is going to give you money is a scam. And if you no longer have a Barclays account, you will be asked for your new bank details…

The refund program is genuine. There are lots of customers commenting below to say they have received these letters. Everyone who has checked so far has found their letter or text is real.

The letter should contain details of the official helpline number for these refunds – 0800 328 6932.

If there is a different telephone number on the letter Barclays sent, you can put it into this Barclay’s phone number verifier. But if you want to be sure, the best way is to call the official helpline number.

What happens to your credit record

This depends on what your account currently shows. If you aren’t sure, check it now, see the best ways to check your credit records.

If your account balance is being written off, the debt will be marked on your credit record as closed and partially settled, with a balance of zero:

  • accounts where there is a default date drop off your credit record six years after that default date.
  • if your account hasn’t been defaulted but is just in arrears, it will drop off six years after it is closed.

So records with a default date will disappear sooner and stop harming your credit score sooner. If there is no default date, you should think if you would prefer one to be added! See what should the default date be for a debt? If you would like a default added, I suggest you contact the refund helpline, say thanks for the write-off but you would also like a default date added when you got into difficulty.

Are you getting enough compensation?

This is hard to tell. It depends exactly what happened to you.

If you are being offered a standard £75 and Barclaycard caused you a lot of problems, you may want to say you should be offered more.

If you are told you are not on the list to get compensation, it is worth going back with a reasoned explanation about when they should have seen you were in trouble. For example, you may have complained about overdraft charges saying you couldn’t afford them.

It is worth talking to the helpline and saying if you think you should have a larger refund. Here is one example where reader has had success:

Told them I wished to challenge the charges pre 2013. They then transferred me to the complaints department that listen to my complaint, took my details and rang me back later that day for more info. A few days later they rang back to go through the story again. Went away for a hour and then rang back with a settlement offer.

Other things you may want to complain about include if you were offered a consolidation loan you couldn’t afford, or if you weren’t signposted to a place for free debt advice when you said you were in financial difficulty.

Hi, is there a limit to how far this goes back? I had two Barclaycard Credit Cards several years ago and the credit limits were really high – I assume after they increased them incrementally as and when I kept spending on them. I was often at my credit limit (sometimes over the limit) and repeatedly paying the minimum amount due each month and incurring late fees and over limit fees. My credit rating and file would have shown I was in a really bad position financially at that time. I did receive a couple of cheques from Barclaycard about a year ago (may £250 in total) which I think they said related to some fees which they applied at the time but maybe shouldn’t have. If there is a 6-7 year limit on this it probably not worth me raising a compliant. Thanks in advance.

      April 2007…

Expect Barclaycard ro reject your complaint as being more than 6 years old and then send it straight to the Ombudsman. The Ombudsman can look at any cases where the customer has only become aware in the last three years that they have cause to complain… The banks ignore that rule when they reject complaints as being over 6 years old!

Not happy about this, how can they just retract an offer!

      what was your offer?
you must have had some financial problems – were they saying they would refund some additional charges they added?

can you say something about your problems – has Barclaycard raised you credit limit to a level that was unmanageable? did you tell Barclaycard about your difficulty and they didn’t offer to help?

Hi Sara, I had received a letter saying we’re giving you a refund for some default fees on your account, and the refund details basic refund of £979.69 with 8% compensatory interest £73.79, deduction for income tax from compensatory interest (£14.76) so total refund amount is £1,038.72.
I explained I was struggling to them at a time and explained I lost my job and was really stuck making payments too them and there was no help or support for me.
I’m so annoyed that it took me to call them again today waiting for 1-Hour and 20 minutes to be told it has been retracted and to find the information on the retraction letter as to why, why has it taken 53days and me calling to find this information out. I don’t know what to do or where I go from here with it.

ok so I think this sounds like a good reason to complain to Barclays and then take this to the Financial Ombudsman if Barclays reject your complaint. A lender should have offered to help you – the regulatory term is “forbearance” – for example by freezing interest, not added extra default fees.

I suggest you tell Barclays you want to lodge a complaint and ask for a refund of the default fees and all interest added from the date when you told them of your difficulty.

You could wait for this letter to arrive, but it’s probably best to just start the complaint now. You can always clarify it later.

You can send the complaint to the Ombudsman if Barclays reject it or if they don’t reply in 8 weeks.

Hi Sarah, you won’t get told about the retraction, one day when you phone up they will just tell you, i thought about this yesterday as i submitted the paperwork to the FOS, as i spoke to them again yesterday asking why the delay on the retraction letter which i needed to accompany the other letters that i was sending to the FOS, the guy i spoke to went and had a look for the reason and he couldn’t see anything on there about a retraction letter i think they delay this to hopefully give them time as there is a three month window. But enough is enough and in my summary to the FOS i mentioned this and told them i have sent this into them without the reason as Barclays haven’t and can’t explain the reason for the retraction. I think the people who answer the phones are reading off a script and its all delay tactics!

Good Luck hope you receive it soon :-)

Hi bob, they a joke I asked how people are getting payments earlier than others and she said it’s because they bank with Barclays I was like not according to those, I do believe my letter was sent out incorrectly though as I got into trouble in 2010 and set a payment plan up which was then passed to a debt collector and paid them however after 43 days you’d think they just say

I don’t understand how it’s not just dealt with in date order the girl yesterday was like people having higher payments have a higher risk so take longer. Barclays calculated that payments based on the checks they completed themselves what is the risk oh yes you don’t want to pay ha

I received the detailed letter about my refund on 3 March – it was dated 10 Feb – I completed the claim form on 10 March. By 18 Aoril zilch. I attempted to do the online form again but the message came up my claim had been successfully submitted. So I then sent two letters of complaint to two different Barclaycard addresses – April 27th no response at all by email, phone or letter. Like everyone else it is so distressing to be told you are owed money and then receive nothing – not even the courtesy of a response.

I’ve been on hold now for 2 hours 31 minutes to ask to have my original letter sent… don’t even know how much I’m owed and there’s no other way of contacting them

I suggest that anyone who cannot get hold of anyone to talk to, or who has been given the run around for too long, sends an email to xxxx edited – now use wandim.execcomplaints@barclays.com xxxx

Subject COMPLAINT ABOUT BARCLAYS FAILURE TO HONOUR THIS LETTER and attach a photo of the letter you have received.

Point out there is no email address on the letter and detail how you have been trying to get in touch and what has happened.

Or alternatively go straight to the Ombudsman as all Barclaycard are doing is delaying and feeding customers scripted stories hoping they will give up.
I had a response yesterday from the Ombudsman asking for a copy of the complaint and the reason for the retraction, I sent them the complaint letter, but told them I couldn’t give them the retraction letter as although promised, I never received one. The Ombudsman will get it for me. So stick a complaint into them first they don’t like it as it goes against them, they then have to respond officially. Also document every attempt you have made contacting them, as you can put it in your complaint, time on the phone who you spoke to etc… It will strengthen the case. Barclaycard offered me £75 compensation which I politely told them to stick it somewhere, so hence it’s with the Ombudsman. They want you to give up! Don’t, fight them all the way, it’s your money!

Just waited 1hr.59mins to be answered, I’m now being told the bank statement must have my address on it (that’s not stated in the letter) that’s 62 days since I sent the forms off. When I go to print off a statement my address isn’t on there neither bank accounts show it on the statements.

Same here, been trying to speak to someone since after the 30 day “promise” of payment. Now 50 days. It has been over 55 days – spoke to someone last week after 1.5 hours and they said “will chase”. Once again on the phone – now been hanging on since 1.20 mins. Beyond a bleeing joke What customer service….. Appalling service more likely. Good luck everyone.

so 3 weeks from when i filled in the online form to the money being in my account…

it literally appeared in my account 5 minutes ago, so im assuming it was a faster payment..

Does anyone have a link to claiming back the tax they deducted….many thanks

I had the same issues, i put a complaint in with them and went through the channels. It is now sat with the Ombudsman as they are a complete waste of time. The agents are reading off scripts just delaying it time after time and feeding cock and bull stories. So forget it you will be waiting til next June, just put a complaint in and then go the Ombudsman.

I received a letter in early March 2022 from Barclaycard stating that I should receive a remedial repayment from them within 30 days after submitting my current bank details. I did and filled out the application form only after checking that this was genuine but no response came within the time stated .
I tried calling and found phone numbers non-operational so resent the form and received a response stating that this claim has already been submitted.
Barclays remedial team were uncontactable, but complaints department took all details and ‘upgraded’ my claim. ( I am elderly and unwell), but four weeks later I still have had no response whatever, and nothing to be found anywhere regarding this.

Just found this forum by chance….on a google search
But just got a notification on my app… that barclays have paid my overdraft off of £1250 (by branch recovery unit). I have yet to receive a letter or any correspondence with regards to this.

Bit of background.. i have recently joined a DMP via stepchange. Barclays wrote to me and said account is closed. Pay back the £1500 overdraft. I have been paying back in installments. And got to £1250 left to pay.

Now as of 9.45am. my account is reading £0.
Am i really debt free to Barclays? This is truly a surprise!

That is a surprise… The app message says the debt has been cleared, not sold to a debt purchaser? I suggest you ask them to confirm this bit of good news if it isnt 100% clear.

Can you give me some history on this overdraft account? HAve you been overdrawn all month, even when paid, for a long while?

If they have cleared this, it may be that you should be able to get a larger refund of overdraft charges… someone yesterday told me Halifax were paying here a refund of 10k (!) for the last 6 years charges,

I entered sequestration which ended years ago. Received letter from Barclays today saying I was due a refund of £850 but I no longer have a credit card with them. Called number on letter and after 35 minutes was told by call handler that I wouldn’t receive it as there was still outstanding balance which the refund would be put towards. I don’t think they can do this and refund should be paid to me as the debt died at end if sequestration period. Does anyone know if I am correct and if I should challenge them through FOS?

I am afraid this is what normally happens with refunds after a partial settlement/write off, including insolvency. FOS takes the view that it is fair that any refund you should have received is first used to repay the debt that was wiped out. Ther3 wer3 quite a few cases about this with PPI refunds.

Does anyone know if they can just send the money directly to their debt collection company as I’ve not had the credit card for nearly 12 years.

Also compared to what people are saying here my refund was £261.19. When I became chronically ill & could not pay my debt with Barclaycard was £8,500. My total debit was £35k. I was a single parent of 2 children.

I’m currently paying debt off as £1 per month as I am ‘too indebted’ to have a proper agreement.
