The administration of WDFC, the legal company who operated the Wonga brand, was completed in August 2020.
The company was finally dissolved in December 2020.
See Companies House records for details.
Background to the administration – rising complaint numbers
A payday loan is “unaffordable” if repaying meant you had to get into more debt, by borrowing again or getting behind on bills or other debts. So you may have repaid all your loans but still have a good claim for a refund of the interest you paid.
When Wonga went under there were over 200,000 people with current loans from Wonga – many of them had a good case for the interest to be removed from their balance so they only repay what they borrowed.
The Administrators proposals set out the reasons why Wonga went into administration. These were the increasing number of affordability complaints, especially from Claims Companies, and the decision by the Financial Ombudsman that FOS could look at loans over 6 years old, going back to 2007.
There were 24,000 affordability complaints awaiting a decision by Wonga and 9,500 complaints against Wonga with the Financial Ombudsman when Wonga ceased trading on 30 August 2018.
Details on the Administration
The Administrators have made various progress reports (available from Companies House) and statements during 2018-20:
- in October 2018, the Administrators published their Proposals, detailing how they planned to handle the administration. Creditors voted to approve these Proposals.
- progress report to end February 2019;
- Witness Statement in April 2019;
- progress report to end August 2019.
An online claim page was set up in April 2019 for Wonga customers to submit claims for refunds. The deadline for sending in a claim was 30 September 2019.
The Administrators assessed all claims using an automated tool. This took account of:
- all loans, including those over 6 years old
- how large a loan was compared to a customer’s income;
- how often someone borrowed without significant gaps;
- whether there were indications of hardship such as missed payments;
- if there is a balance outstanding for the right of set-off.
Where it decided one or more loans were unaffordable, it calculated how much interest should be refunded and added statutory interest at 8%.
In August 2019 the Administrators starting sending emails to people saying whether their claims have been successful or rejected.
In September, the Administrators sent an update on progress up to end August 2019. Key points include:
- at end August, 389,621 claims for unaffordable payday lending have been accepted by the administrators;
- the total value of these claims is c £460million – an average of c £1,200 a claim.
- £23m of outstanding loans have been collected. The Administrators say that outstanding loans are being taken into account and given the right of set-off where the customer has a claim for unaffordable loans.
- The remaining loan book will not be sold to a debt collector.
At this point the Administrators were saying that payments would be made by 30 January 2020.
29 January 2020 – administrators announce 4.3p in the pound
On 29 January 2020, the Wonga administrators announced that they will be paying 4.3p in the pound to unsecured creditors, including all the 400,000 people who are owed a refund for unaffordable lending.
The administrators have now given the final numbers:
- they assessed 401,202 claims as being valid;
- of these 358,129 are being paid 4.3% of their assessed compensation value;
- the remaining 43,073 also owed a balance on a loan to wonga, so their compensation has been used to clear or reduce that balance.
What happens next:
- the money should be paid within the next 4 weeks. This has come as a surprise as people had been told it would be paid by the end of January;
- the loans that are being refunded should be removed from your credit record in the next 6 weeks.
My comment – ripped off by Wonga and now let down by the regulators
The administrators told people they would get “significantly less” than that amount as there would not be enough money to pay the claims in full.
But many people will have been hoping for more than 4.3% and are very upset.
It is not the administrators’ fault there is so little money to be divided between so many people. It is the fault of the regulators – first the OFT and then the FCA – that they allowed Wonga to break the rules saying that affordability should be checked
And now the regulators have failed to ensure that these Wonga victims get the compensation they should have. When a PPI firm went under, the Financial Services Compensation Scheme stepped in and people with PPI claims got paid in full. But the FCA has not extended the FSCS to cover payday lenders.
This isn’t just a problem for the hundreds of thousands of Wonga victims. Borrowers from many payday lenders have been unable to get proper compensation after the lender has had to close. This will apply to QuickQuid, the money shop, Payday UK and Payday Express borrowers as well.
The FCA needs to rethink this and provide a safety net for people who were mis-sold unaffordable loans.
Readers comments – Shock and disappointment
This a brief overview of the hundreds of comments below this article.
Some people are happy to be getting anything:
- “I am only getting just shy of £25 but for the sake of completing a 30 second form it’s not too bad.”
- “I will be getting £79.93 of the £1854.17 I was owed. Better than nothing!”
- “£35 out of a possible £800. I wasn’t expecting much anyway. I’m more interested in having the 25 wonga loans removed from my credit file.”
The administrators had said people would get “significantly less” than the claim, but many people were hoping for at least 10%:
- “I got mine £88.67 – claim was £2057.05 – I was expecting at least a couple hundred.”
- “Claim was 3034, getting 130. By considerably less I didn’t think it would be over 95% of it. That is ridiculous.”
- “To receive £44.10 from a claim of £1023.00 is insulting to be honest.”
- “Owed £1499, getting £63…what an absolute joke!”
- “4.3% is an absolute disgrace. Although people are trying to be positive they shouldn’t have to. The people who made all the profit here would spend the biggest payout anyone has received on an evening out and not think twice about it.”
- “Gutted…. was hoping for at least the 10% speculated.”
This reader blamed not just Wonga but the regulators:
- “Over £11k accepted reduced down to £480 – my job, my marriage and 4 years of desperation followed by years of rebuilding my life – that’s what the regulators consider that to be worth! Shame on everyone involved in Wonga and the lack of regulation of lenders like them !”
Some are just are delighted that Wonga has gone under:
- “Heads up everyone…We have won in the end! They can no longer be a hindrance to any of us any more!”
- “Mines going to charity. Best thing to have happened is for them to have gone bust”
- ”Thank you Wonga you paid me to continue gambling, I lost everything. Good riddance.”
Many people are also disappointed and shocked that they aren’t being paid by the end of January. Some people getting these refunds are still in difficult financial circumstances and had planned to use the money to pay a bill or some debts.
February 2020 – some clarifications from the administrators
The remaining loans
The administrators have confirmed that no further payments are being accepted and the debts will not be sold to a debt collector. So you don’t have to worry about being taken to court or bailiffs.
But the debts are not technically being written off. They will remain on your credit record for 6 years from the default date on your credit record. If you don’t know what this date is, I suggest you check it now.
In practice, now the company in liquidation, if you contact a credit reference agency and say your Wonga debt is incorrect, you can ask the credit reference agency to “suppress” the record as Wonga can no longer say what the right entry should be. See How to correct credit records if the lender has gone under for details.
No deductions are being made for tax
The Administrators have said:
“the Joint Administrators have agreed with HMRC that the payment may be treated for tax purposes as set wholly against the interest and fees element first, and statutory interest second. As a result, where the distribution paid by the administrators to each customer does not exceed the interest and fees claimed by them, no withholding tax will be required to be deducted at source from payments made by the administrators in such cases.”
The simple version of this is:
- the administrators are not taking off any tax.
- there will, therefore, be no tax to have to reclaim.
- the vast majority of people will not have to pay any tax on any part of of the refund even if you are a higher rate taxpayer. The amounts don’t have to be declared if you complete an annual tax return eg if you are self-employed.
A small number of extra payments
A small number of customers were owed money by Wonga for a different reason, for example they may have overpaid on a loan. These extra amounts are also being paid out and you will get 4.3% of them too.
If you were not using a claims company, you should have received a single email at the end of January which mentions both amounts.
If you were using a claims company you should have received two emails, each about one of the amounts. If you have only received one email and it mentions a claim which is smaller than the amount you expected, you can contact the administrators, it may be this is the “extra” payment.
Bank account issues
I asked the Administrators why some people are still getting emails asking them to update their bank details. They say:
These emails will be in response to customers’ requests received by the Customer Care team prior to 29 January 2020 providing a secure method by which customers can update their bank account details. Customers should respond to these emails.
I asked the Administrators what will happen if they make a payment and it bounces back to them because the account is no longer open. They say:
Where updated information is available from customers we will attempt to reprocess bounced dividend payments via electronic transfer. Alternatively, we will issue a cheque to the address held on file.
A blogger contacted the Administrators on the 14th February to ask why she hadn’t been paid and was told:
“I can confirm that the joint administrators have commenced distribution of dividend payments to unsecured creditors, including those with redress claims. Given the volume of transactions that need to now take place, the administrators cannot guarantee an exact date when individuals will receive payment but are aiming to complete transactions within the next two weeks.”
February and March – payments started but with problems
I was told by the Administrators on Friday 28th February that 90%+ of payments have been made and they expect to make the rest of payments over the next two weeks by BACS. About 22,000 the following week, about 13,000 the week after. It looks as though the 22,000 group got their money. It’s not clear to me how many of the 13,000 group have.
Many people in the comments below this article were reporting probems. These included people whose bank accounts had never changes. Problems included:
- confusion over whether a claims company has been paid or they will be;
- Wongasaid payment was sent to a claims firm that hadn’t been used;
- Wonga said a cheque was sent to a house you no longer live it;
- Wonga said a payment has been made to your bank account but it hasn’t arrived ;
- Wonga has said a payment was sent to an old bank account despite new bank account details having been given and co0nfirmed as having been received.
On 2 March the Administrators said the payment process was taking longer than expected and payments would continue to about 40,000 people over the next 2 weeks:
The Joint Administrators have now attempted to make dividend payments to over 410,000 creditors… In addition to the payments that were not made we have had approximately 40,000 payments returned to us due to incorrect customer bank details recorded on file with Wonga. We will now begin contacting these customers whose payments were returned, by email, to obtain correct and up-to-date bank account details.
The dividend payment process is taking longer than anticipated and payments will continue to be paid during the next two weeks.
On 19 March the Admistrator’s announced:
The Joint Administrators have now attempted to make dividend payments to over 443,000 creditors representing 98% of the creditor population. This includes payments to creditors whose payments were briefly held back from the initial payment phase whilst additional validation checks were completed to new bank account and/or address details that were provided. The Joint Administrators now continue to focus on the remaining small population of unpaid dividends in order to complete the payment process.
From here on progress was very slow, impeded by lockdown.
End August 2020 – administration ends – do you still have a problem?
Have you not been paid?
The Administrators final report blames the payment problems of Wonga’s poor systems and on creditors who did not update their bank details when requested to. But as many comments below detail, people who had never changed their bank account or who had updated their bank details several times and had each confirmed also experienced prolonged delays.
At 28 Auguest when the administration ended, there were still c 49,000 payments with a total value of £632,000 that had not been made – an average about of £13 per payment. About 70% of these were for amounts owed before the administration, so not affordability complaints.
The Administrators have passed the £632,000 to the Insolvency Service. If any creditors want to claim an unpaid amount, they should email CustomerServicesEAS@Insolvency.gov.uk.
A problem with your credit record
If there is a problem with your credit record then you now need to contact the Credit Reference Agency where the problem is showing – Experian, Equifax or TransUnion. Say you can no longer get an answer from the administrators as the firm has been dissolved so you would like the CRA to “suppress” the credit records (list them) as they are inaccurate.
This problem could have been an error by the administrators, who failed to delete the record. It could be an error by Wonga before the administration: the loan date or balance or default date is wrong – you want the default date to be as early as possible so it drops off sooner – or Wonga may have failed to add a default date.
If the CRA refuses, send the CRA a formal complaint and this can be sent to the Financial Ombudsman. In practice people are getting these sorted with the CRAs without having to go to the ombudsman.
James C says
just received this en\mail from administrators “Update on your Wonga claim
Dear Mr
Case Number:
Third Party Reference:
We previously emailed you in relation to your successful claim in the Wonga administration. At the end of January, we will communicate by email the amount you will be due to receive as a dividend.
Please be aware, the payment you receive will be considerably smaller than your accepted claim value.
We will make an electronic payment (bank transfer) to your bank account. The account number we have on file for you ends with these 4 digits: ”
Hope this helps
Ms Ak says
I received the same email today also. 😎
Sara (Debt Camel) says
As the comments from Mike & James say, wonga is sending out a mass email to people who are getting refunds. It gives the last 4 digits of your bank account. If that is correct there is no need to get in touch with them to confirm this.
It does NOT say what % you will get.
I am deleting comments from people saying they think they will get 2p or they hope to get 15%. They aren’t helpful, no one knows at the moment!
WangerNoWonger says
Thank you for all your hard work Sarah. For many of us this website has been a source of great comfort. We are all reaching the end of the road now with Wonga. Lessons learnt!
I hope that you get your life back in February!
M says
Agreed on the above – Sara, thank you for providing all the excellent information and updates, removing ill-informed claims and overall for providing access to this excellent forum for people who’ve been affected by the malpractice of Wonga. It’s been beyond helpful.
James cook says
received an email today to say they will email me the amount I will receive at the end of January so looks like payments are slightly behind, pretty pointless to email to say they will email lol
Sara (Debt Camel) says
It has your bank account details in it. This should stop all the many people worrying about whether Wonga have updated theirs correctly!
Sara (Debt Camel) says
There is NO indication that they are delaying payments.
Jim says
Hi, the 4 digits on my email are wrong but if I log into wonga my bank details are correct as I’ve not changed bank accounts since using wonga. I’ve emailed about this a few times and never received a response. Should I be concerned. Thanks
Sara (Debt Camel) says
Yes you should be concerned. Email them at the given address and phone them up.
Sara (Debt Camel) says
PLEASE do not leave a comment saying you have just received the same email that other people have described today. So far about 30 people have done this!
Paul says
Hi not had a email off Wonga today yet?
Sara (Debt Camel) says
They are probably sending them out in batches so don’t panic!
But do check your spam folder…
Lorna says
Hi I received the email a few months back with my bank details on and to email them if it was incorrect but it was correct so I did nothing, then the email today quoted 4 different numbers for account ending but my case number is correct. (I wondered if I had accidentally been emailed quoting someone else’s claim) I have emailed the customer services and apparently they will send me a link. Just thought it was strange that the digits had changed and I haven’t changed them, hopefully it may of just been an error.
Adrian says
After having my claim assessed and partially upheld I am left with a balance owing to Wonga.
What is likely to happen now and what would be the best course of action for me to take.
Sara (Debt Camel) says
They have stopped taking payments to debts. And they previously said they would not be selling the loans to debt collectors. But they haven’t said what will happen yet. I think you have to wait and find out.
Adrian says
Thank you so wait and see then :)
Michelle R says
Hi everyone, just received an email from administrators to check my address was correct for posting out a cheque at end of month. Why a cheque because, I had asked if this could be done as I no longer have a job or a current account, only a savings account. I hope this information helps any one else in the same position. All the best.
Michele D says
I have also just received an email showing incorrect bank details despite having updated them on Wonga as requested (account now closed less than 2 years ago) – am I right in thinking any money paid into this old account will automatically transfer to my existing account as per the switching guarantee ??
Sara (Debt Camel) says
I suggest you contact the Administrators and say they have your account wrong even though you have told them
Michele says
Have emailed Wonga for the link to update details – my guess is there’re correct anyway !
Craig L says
I’ve had a third request to confirm banking details after the previous 2 request were confirmed received – I hope these aren’t stall tactics!
Ks says
I have had the same, I confirmed my details back in Oct/Nov and had another email on the 10th Jan asking to upload again.
Adelle says
I had email oct to check bank details correct which they were, got same email on 10th jan but bank details were wrong, confused as to why wrong now? Emailed them but as yet no reply.
Craig L says
All seems a bit shabby and chaotic just at the moment of the long awaited payment.
I hope everyone’s stress and worry caused is soon over!
Daryl says
Like most on here I got stuck in the payday loan cycle lending from one to pay the interest from another but have spent the last few years working hard to break the cycle.
I always had the opinion I knew what I was signing up to so shouldn’t put a claim in. Then I watched as one by one these company’s slowly went into administration after paying their top executives millions before the bubble popped and they were held to task for how they had treated the most vulnerable people.
Now the administrators of WONGA, WDA, PaydayUk/Moneyshop contacted me saying I had redress claims so I acted and like most wait to see what the final payouts will be -@ very much something is better than nothing in my opinion.
However while waiting I have been watching and reading and want to thank Sara at Debt Camel for the site and everyone who has commented and shown me I am not alone.
Following advice given and using a letter template from the site I submitted a claim against MYJAR via email on 19th December with a response yesterday offering a hefty redress in 15 days time which will clear my remaining debt that’s before WONGA even pays out.
My one bit of advice to EVERYONE is we are all victims of these companies so don’t stand for it. Take the time to hold these companies to task while they are still active and get the full amount you are owed and not a tiny percentage once they have closed down.
Michele says
Where can I get this template letter and is it free?
Sara (Debt Camel) says
It’s here and it’s free: https://debtcamel.co.uk/payday-loan-refunds/
Laura says
Congrats on working to get debt free. I’m the same and it’s the best feeling ever. Living your life without constant panic and worry is pure joy! I don’t think you realise at the time when you are in the cycle how bad the stresses and strains are but I’m the same if it wasn’t for Sara and finding this sure one night while unable to sleep I wouldn’t be where I am either, thanks Sara if I had have got Wonga in time I would have had over 26k in redress but it wasn’t to be but all the others ment I am now debt free and have savings!
Ian says
Why dont the administrators say when they are sending the last batch of emails so people arent panicking and inundating this page and wonga with ive not received mine yet etc they could easily say if you dont receive one by the 17th then get in touch instead of letting people panic
Laura says
When uploading the bank details via the secure link do you sign in? Is that kitworks the same password at your Wonga account as I can’t seem to get signed in. Sent three emails and was on hold for a hour today but had to hang up. TIA
Sarah says
I didnt sign in and they received my details no problem. I can only assume they know it’s you based on clicking the link in the email. I rang them to make sure.
Laura says
Thanks for getting back to me. I tried to
Ring to ask but got no answer. I’ve uploaded without
Signing In so will wait for the email to say it’s actioned. My bank details haven’t changed but they say they have no bank details for me. Rolling my eyes as I type!
Chaz says
Anyone else get an email saying the reviewing process has been delayed? I got an email saying that at the end of November and heard nothing since!
Sara (Debt Camel) says
Had you appealed against the decision by the Administrator’s on your Claim?
Chaz says
Nope, I’ve not had anything come through to say it had been rejected or accepted. Just that the reviewing process had been delayed. I’ve already had an email with the link for my bank details though.
Sara (Debt Camel) says
I suggest you email them again or phone to ask what the decision was.
stephen says
Hi
I’d just like to say thanks Sara for all the help with Wonga. Thanks to the resources on here I was able to get a settlement from the Money shop and also another debt written off which I never would have known about. I will receive whatever the final percentage is from Wonga and I’ll take it. It’s time to draw a line under this and I’m glad that less and less people in the future will be ripped off by these companies.
Good luck.
Ricky says
The money shop are they paying out they told me they are still going through scheme?
Sara (Debt Camel) says
They are now in a Scheme of Arrangement but you can still make a claim. See https://debtcamel.co.uk/money-shop-to-close-two-million-customers-will-be-informed/
Sara (Debt Camel) says
The Wonga administrators have sent an email out to a lot of people today.
If you have received one, please read the comments other people have already left.
Lynne says
Great. I can’t read mine if there is one…..
Sara (Debt Camel) says
It must be frustrating for you. But the administrators have accepted your claim and they have the right bank account. I’m not sure what else you expect me to say?
Ertan says
Hi Sarah
Last year I received an email from Wonga informing me I will be refunded around £2,000 and that I had 2 weeks to respond if I wanted to challenge the amount. Unfortunately I only noticed the email around 3 weeks later. When I told them I was not happy with the offer and wanted to challenge it they said it was too late to do that?
The reason I think the offer is unfair is because I borrowed around £15,000 – £20,000 in total over the years. A few close friends also borrowed around £10,000-£15,000 and their offers were much higher than mine
Do you have any advice???
Kind regards
Sara (Debt Camel) says
The time for appealing a decision has gone.
It’s hard to compare your offer with someone else’s. They may have had larger loans compared to their salary. Or you may have had a break in your borrowing. Or you may have had a write off in 2014. Or some of your loans may have been paid off sooner. Many possible reasons, it’s not just the total value of the loans.
Nikki says
Hi
I had a successful claim email in November but havent had anything today, nothing in my spam folder either so I’m a little concerned.
I hate debts says
Hi Sara,
I have a loan with loans2Go from Sep, they have charged me 1.013.2% on £1000 I am being charged £4.114.08 over 17 repayments (£228). I only used £550 so I paid £450 back straight away. I’ve now made x3 payments of £228. I’ve asked for a settlement figure for the end of Jan and they have quoted me £842. It seems they have ripped me right off, does this seem right to you? Can I do anything about this?
Sara (Debt Camel) says
I have called that “ the worst loan in Britain”. See https://debtcamel.co.uk/worst-loan-in-britain/ for how to complain about it.
Scott says
After reading a lot of the comments, I guess I’m one of the lucky ones. Although I did return my completed form back to the administrators, I have to admit, I’d more or less forgot about the Wonga palaver. It wasn’t until I had checked out Debt Camel regarding incorrect info on my credit file that I saw this forum. I’m just grateful for any refund that comes my way, because let’s face it, you get what your given and there’s no use worrying about it or second guessing. I hope everyone is satisfied with their payouts and we can all put this to bed.
Oh and a final thank you to Sara for this amazing website. Very useful and informative.
Ian barrow says
I have been an observer on this page and hats off to sarah well done you kept me sane
David Thompson says
Thank you all for sharing your experiences of Payday Loans. I was stuck in a bad place for a year or two where all I could do was turn to payday loans. It first started out as a loan for car repair and then as time went by things for worse. I wasn’t able to keep up with this monster that was spiralling out of control. Everytime a Wonga advert came on TV, I used to feel nervous and scared. I thought I was all alone.
Knowing that some of you felt the same way eases the pain a little, knowing that we have got through this is a major triumph and I really enjoy hearing how some of you have managed to fight and succeed.
As for the claim, mine was accepted in full. Not really fussed about the amount (obviously closer to the total sum would be great) but I’m just glad to see that these loan companies are being held accountable.
I did want to query one thing though if anyone can help. I read on the e-mail that they are going to clear the credit checks or something like that. Does this mean my credit rating will increase?
Sara (Debt Camel) says
If there were any late payments or defaults on the Wonga loans being deleted, then yes, your credit rating should improve. How much depends on what else is on your credit record.
If you repaid the loans on time, deleting them won’t improve your score and indeed it may even drop! But getting rid of some payday loans may make some lenders more prepared to give you credit. This can be important for mortgage applications.
If there is ANY chance you may need to make any other affordability complaints against other lenders, take a copy of your credit reports NOW with the Wonga loans still showing and plan to keep this safe and accessible. You may later need to show how bad your credit record used to be.
Andrew says
Guys,
There seems to be a lot of unnecessary stress and anxiety regarding payment. Last I looked there were over 300.000 successful claims needed to be processed, including my own. There definitely isn’t going to be one administrator per claim, so I think they might just be a little busy at the moment. Those whom keep receiving emails for up to date bank details need to stop worrying.
1. Constantly contacting them every time you receive the email is only going to slow the process of your claim further. If they tell you the system will have updated them, then sit back n relax.
2. The Administration is not out to scam you. They are not wonga. Again 300.000 + claims to process. How many employees do you think this administration has?
3. The amounts we receive are what they are. It took me less than 2 mins to fill out my claim form and the same to change my bank details, so if I only get £10 back. That’s not a bad hourly rate for 4 mins of my time.
4. Even if the system has your old bank details. End of January 2020. End of January 2021 It doesn’t matter. I’ve paid my 4 minutes of time n labour when filling out the claim form, so I’m just gonna sit back n CHILL OUT. Maybe contemplate how lucky I was that my claim was accepted and how unlucky the thousands of other claims were denied.
Lynne says
I hear what you’re saying regarding chilling out but it’s not helping being January everyone’s skint and people are waiting on this money. I myself had to get rid of my car in November so I am kinda hoping whatever is coming my way can help me with some sort of deposit for another car.
Sara (Debt Camel) says
Lots of people here have dug themselves out of their payday loan mess and can be relaxed about getting anything back and happy that one of the biggest sharks has gone under.
Other people are still in a big financial mess and £50 means a food shop for the family or £100 new shoes the kids are desperate for.
Lynne says
Exactly Sara. Just because some are in a position to not have to worry and desperately wait for this money (good for them), doesn’t mean the rest of us aren’t.
Paul says
Still not received a email like many did yesterday, sent bank details and photo ID 3 times now without confirmation they received it, phoned them up last week which they said they can’t manually check if they have correct bank details, so once again can only say the administrators are making it awkward for some to get there refunds!!
andrew ford says
Paul, i had exactly this issue i sent my details several times with no confirmation, ,,just had email confirming i will get a payment end jan, into my new bank ,, hope you get one soon
Tracey Kyle says
Hi
I recieved a email yesterday asking me to update my bank details. I already did this back in November and they have not updated them so i sent them again yesterday. I emailed them telling them this. I am going to call on monday as could not get through to them yesterday. I am just hoping they do update my back details as i no longer have the account they have on file
Lynne says
See this is why I’m worried. I confirmed my bank details months ago and since Christmas I’ve had no access to my original email address. So I’ve emailed them from my new address twice to let them know if they are sending stuff out to use the new address but no reply. I realise they’ll be inundated but argh
andrew ford says
Lynne, try not to worry, i had no contact from them ,from oct till the other day(despite several emails sent) have now had email confirming payment will be sent to new bank account
Nicola says
I have not had a email asking ify bank details are correct last email I had was last months of them with all my loans on it. Should I contact wonga
Gray says
I started using Wonga when my wife had to have her leg amputated because she could not work, it was the only way I could get help with money ( it was help at the time ) have money off them pay it back when I got paid then had to have money off them again because I just given them my wages! and so on. My wife then lost her disability car thanks to the Government, we could not buy one. I lost my job last March and life is just pointless day after day now. My claim that was accepted was £4740, now that would really help. Yes Wonga ripped us all off but I still feel I am being ripped off with the small amount we will get back, life for me is always a kick in the teeth and yet someone said on here that to get back £10 for filling in a form that took 4mins has no idea. It may be fine for others to say sit back and chill………not easy!!
Jan says
So sorry to hear what your family is going through Gray. I hope things soon improve for you
Diane says
I had my email yesterday advising my claim was successful and i will be paid at the end of jan. Although i could do with the money now… ive had this claim ongoing with wonga and had the FOS involved for over 3 years. So ill be glad when i get something whatever that will be… the email has the right account number on so lets just wait and see. Like others on here i had a large redress payment from myjar and even had an email 2 years later saying the owed me more! I have also had 3 other successful claims against these companies. So dont give up is the motto. Its not quick but can be worth it.
Kerry says
I had various loans from my jar.. I have no paperwork can’t even trace it back on credit report.. My jar are saying now there is no recollection of me taking out any loan.. At the time it was my biggest loan having to borrow more money to pay the loan back.. Does anyone know how I can go about this any other way.. I’ve been on to fos they’ve spoke to my jar and said they need proof.. Im running out of ideas they owe me a hell of a lot of money and cannot find a way to get hold of any information.
Thanks kerry.
Sara (Debt Camel) says
How long ago were the loans? Have you looked at your bank statements?
Graham says
Go to your bank, if your branch is still open, or check using your online banking. Should be easy enough to find.
Tan says
They used to be called Txtloans before they became my jar. So I would look for this name on your bank statements / emails (historic).
russell says
Hi – check your emails, plus My Jar should find you via the emails. That how I got My Jam to get money back.
Isla Watson says
I just emailed the customer care as I still haven’t received an email saying if I was successful or not with the claim. I got an email on 29 April 2019 to advise I may have a claim. I filled out claim form and got a confirmatory email 29 April 2019 with claim reference and stating I need not do anything more. Since then I have heard nothing. I get they are really busy but you always worry that they sent an email that didn’t arrive for whatever reason.
JM says
Has anyone had their Wonga loans removed from their credit report on an upheld claim? The administrators said it would take time to remove them, but that was months ago.
Jonathan Adam says
Going back to the ongoing Wonga thing, the last email I had from them was in November 2019 to check they had the right bank details. They did so I didn’t respond or try to change anything. I haven’t had any further emails, should I be concerned?
Jonathan Adam says
Contacted Grant Thornton direct, got put through to an administrator and left a message. Get anything back I’ll update.
Sacha roberts says
Hello, I havnt received an email yet , though I got a email in October that they had received my bank details and supporting documents, and heard nothing more.
Should be concerned that I won’t be getting anything back.?!
Thank you
Sacha
J rock says
I’ve uploaded 3 times since October even had a email again today to do it again.
Do I need to ring them I thought I’d done everything right
Andy says
Have no faith in the link to upload ur details.. Third time I’ve uploaded Info and it never seems to register…Last time I rang and she said she would put my new details in, but I still got an email today saying I haven’t done it yet grrrrr..
Andy says
Ps I’ve just done it again , but also wrote down my name DOB and case number next to cards..It says I have 6 more uploads remaining, I presume that’s in case you made a mistake on previous ones? Or do they want you to upload it 10 times lol
Regards
Jay says
Hi Sara
Thanks again for your help with my previous queries on other lenders.
Regarding Wonga, I had an email on 07/10/19 to say my claim was partially accepted and they aim to pay out by 30/01/20.
I haven’t received any email on 10/01/20 about my bank details though. Should I be contacting them?
Sara (Debt Camel) says
Have your bank details changed?
Jay says
No, I’m just concerned they haven’t checked with me
Jaqueline says
Hi I’m sorry if this has been asked already – I’ve received my email but it states they don’t have my details and send bank statement and proof of ID – I did this months ago and they confirmed they’d got it ??? Anyone else had this problem
Could anyone give me the telephone number for them will try them Monday ?? X
Graham says
Jacqueline
I received the same email today, I have submitted the bank details previous, but I don’t think I submitted ID.
I will just re submit what they are asking for, take about 2 minutes, so not exactly hard work.
We won’t see any money until 30th , 31st Jan I don’t think.
Steven says
Wonga Customer Care team. You can call us on 0207 138 8330, or email us at customercare@wonga.com.. We’re here Monday to Friday 9am-6pm. We are closed on Saturdays, Sundays and Bank Holidays
Rasheed says
I believe they are giving people with larger payback sums harder time then people with smaller amounts. Mines only £650 and my pals is well over 13k and we are both receiving totally different responses. Mine being straight forward and his being we need this n that when his done exactly what I have at the same time
Sara (Debt Camel) says
no, that isn’t happening! the administrators don’t care who gets what, it’s just the number of people to be sorted that matters.
Glen says
19 days to wait £8100 is my redress, I’m hoping for £200, anything else I will be happy.
When I threw my hat in the ring i never ever thought I’d get a penny so anything will help.Cant believe how much I used these to live on.i was trapped for years.
The amount of folk waiting is enormous 2.5p in the pound is my best guess = £200
Sarah says
If we are lucky! My guess is even less.
Stuart says
Guesses are totally counter productive because no one has any idea at all out could be anywhere from 1p per pound to 10p or more just find something better to do with your time rather than blurting out random speculations lol
Sarah says
Surely saying “anywhere from 1p to 10p or more” is also a guess…
Sara (Debt Camel) says
No it’s not, he’s saying it could be anything! Someone saying “2.5p” or “less than 2.5p” is making a guess. And i haven’t seen any evidence to back it up.
Stuart says
Yes but it has a somewhat wider margin for error wouldn’t you say
Personally I’m not in the position where I’m desperately relying on a decent payout but some people are, and saying ‘I reckon it’s gonna be less that 2p in the pound’ is just stressing them out needlessly. Wait and see, maybe you’re right, maybe not
Emma Horton says
Hi
Wondering if anyone can help on the 30/08/19 Wonga emailed me to my claim has been partially accepted, along with a break down of my loan history. They also requested for update bank details which I have done soon as it came through, they emailed me to confirm there system has been updated. I have not heard any thing since though ?
Does it make a difference my claim was partially accepted?? I see some people have heard from them but I am yet to hear any thing
Or am I being silly ? I am not great at these things Thank you
Sara (Debt Camel) says
Almost everyone had their claim “partially accepted”. It would be very rare for someone to have every single loan refunded.
Yvonne says
I have had all my loans accepted 73 of them from years ago , so it does happen
Sara (Debt Camel) says
yes it does, but as I said its rare and almost everyone had their claim partially accepted.
Steven says
Just received an email from wonga saying they do not have my bank details, I have a confirmation email from Wonga saying they received my bank details last year. This whole process is a shambles.
sacha says
Me too , excatly the same situation. I’m hopeful they might email me Monday! 🤨 🌑
Matthew says
I just got the same email yesterday fuming so does that mean they have lost all our bank details?
Turtle says
Same. Pathetic and incompetent
Graham says
I only received mine today (Saturday) , looks like they are sending out in batches, relax, if your complaint has been upheld, or partially, they will be in touch
Robert J says
I have a pending claim with Wonga.
When I went into DM plan I received 184 demand emails from lending stream.
They rejected my claim after I made one and the stress from it all made me poorly.
It took over a year before I felt well enough to challenge them again but I left it too late according to FOS but they are looking onto it for me on the grounds that I received so much harassment and that I have no records from lending stream as I deleted everything
After the harassment I suffered I didn’t want to see their name anywhere
This was foolish I know but I was not thinking straight due to the strain I was under.
Lending stream are the worst of the worst
Sara (Debt Camel) says
And at the moment LS may be the largest payday lender in Britain, grrrrr.
I hope FOS decide they can look into your case.
Yash says
Okay I have just received another email asking for my bank details and proof yet again (picture of driving licence and bank with sort code and account showing) for the 3rd time.
Has anyone else experienced getting this email multiple times? Rather annoyed was hoping that would be my percentage, my driving licence has just expired & I have to have a medical first before it can be reissued so rather worried about that
Mat Smith says
Received the same email as well. 2nd time I have uploaded banking details. At least it might seem like they are in a position to make a payout very soon.
Lynne says
It’d be good if it does mean the payout is on its way however why the need to ask multiple times for bank details and ID?!
Sara (Debt Camel) says
At a guess:
a) they would rather ask several times because some people don’t see or ignore some emails
b) they have cobbled together several systems quickly to do this and they aren’t accurately (or at all?) picking up if someone has recently updated their bank account details
c) people can change their bank account more than once.
Paul Green says
I got the same email.
I replied to them attaching a screen shot if the email they sent me when they had confirmed they had my details, I also copied the text and pasted into the email just In case they use the excuse they couldn’t open the screen shot attachment.
I then finished by saying they shouldn’t need the details of they were confirmed, so why was the email sent out…..is it a scam?
Hopefully they will be kind enough to give a response, although I can’t understand how this email would get sent out after 10pm Saturday night when if you try to call them “the offices are closed after 6pm on saturday”
If the offices are closed…..who sent the emails
Sara (Debt Camel) says
They are sending out large numbers of emails in batches.
GazJ says
Hello all
I had many a loans with wonga, and went through the process like most of you, in regards to recieving the various emails from the administrators saying about the claim being acknowledged, partially accepted and then saying about when we expect to recieve the payouts at the end of this month.
From what i took from the most recent email we all have got, am i right in thinking Sarah, that it does look like, saying if one person is set to get back, say for instance £690, it could only be 15% of that value and with that, saying they are going to be paying it out as a dividend, whatever we will all be getting, will be given to us every so often, instead of a lump sum?
Sara (Debt Camel) says
it could only be 15% of that value
I could be a lot less than that
saying they are going to be paying it out as a dividend, whatever we will all be getting, will be given to us every so often, instead of a lump sum
no, this is going to be a single payment of the whole amount you will be getting.
Robert Bateman says
Hi, I’m just wondering if there is anybody else here who has yet to receive the email sent out a few days ago? So far, I’ve heard nothing.
If I should have been contacted, who do I speak with to inquire?
Thanks
Rob
Sara (Debt Camel) says
Several other people have said this.
Ian says
These emails they are sending out do they need a reply if they have your correct details do you have to confirm they are correct
Sara (Debt Camel) says
No.
Gill says
The email I was sent yesterday was the same as the one I’d been sent a couple of months, and I had responded to by clicking the link and updating my bank details. Yesterday’s email didn’t have any acknowledgement of my bank account details, in part or otherwise, so I clicked the link again. I am concerned that they haven’t received the information on either occasion. I’ve emailed them but who knows if I’ll get a response, they’ll be inundated with people reacting to this last lot of emails. Feels like they’re taking a scattergun approach with no research or intelligence behind this last round of emails!
Nicola says
I have not had a email about bank details last email I got was last month saying how much my claim was worth and it all broke down. I am not realy worried because my account number and sort code has not changed. Just my name but should still hopefully go in my account
Phil woods says
Have Grant Thornton managed to sell any of wongas foreign operations.
Sara (Debt Camel) says
In September they said they had sold the Polish subsidiary, had wound down the Spanish subsidiary after being unable to sell it and were still trying to sell the South African subsidiary. Investments in India and Soth Africa were also being sold.
Lynne says
Would that mean that ultimately there’d be more money in the ‘pot’, as it were?
Sara (Debt Camel) says
I think their aim is to have sold everything by now and now be distributing it all. The Wageday Advance administrators didn’t have any of this complicated stuff to sell, which us why they knew much earlier what the final distribution might be.
Chris says
Yes. Some of what they sell/sold would go into the redress pot. I’ve just looked it up and they seem to have sold the Poland operation for around £19.1m.
Obv not all that will go into ‘our’ pot but certainly a chunk will. Whether that’s 25%/50% will depend on all other creditors too but based on the August statement they seem to be putting just over 50% of available funds (45m of 83m) towards us so here’s hoping…
Chelsea says
We updated our bank details on the Wonga website last year when you were still able to, but then have received two emails since asking for proof of bank details and ID. Do we still need to send this even if we have updated through the website?
Sara (Debt Camel) says
If you have been asked for proof of id, I suggest you send it.
Will says
Hi there I was asked last year to update the bank details with the I’d…I then called them and they yes your details have been updated and said to me he was looking at the screenshots I had sent .I then receive email yesterday to update my details with them gggrrrrrr….do you think I need to do this or do you think it was sent in error thank you.
David says
Hi.
Like most on the blog I have received confirmation from Wonga pay out will be at the end of the month. I have lost count between 2013 – 2016 of loans taken out with various pay day loan companies. Is there any harm would you say in sending that template to the companies borrowed from to see if I have further entitlement without specific loan details to hand.
Sara (Debt Camel) says
No harm if you are sending it to companies you borrowed from and where you remember the borrowing as being difficult – the complaint template https://debtcamel.co.uk/payday-loan-refunds/ includes a request for a list of your loans
Ian says
Hi sara not sure if this makes sense but i was having the wonga loans paid in to a halifax acc which has since been taken over by a creditor my hsbc acc which i now have was the one i was paying my money back from so nothing actually went into this acc i obviously dont want the redress money goin to my halifax acc because i wont see im sure they had my hsbc as my last known acc but that was just takin my payments out?
Sara (Debt Camel) says
You need to inform the administrators of the bank account you would like the redress to be paid into.
Ian says
Is this grant thournton?
Sara (Debt Camel) says
yes. Email customercare@wonga.com or call 0207 138 8330.
Lynne says
I’m going to be calling them today due to the lack of contact and the fact the old emails aren’t working and they’ve not acknowledged my new address
James says
I had my claim accepted for around £1300. Fully appreciate that they’ve stated that it’ll be significantly less than that amount, but doesnt anyone have any ideas, in terms of percentages, how much less it’ll be?
Thanks in advance
Sara (Debt Camel) says
People have lots of ideas but anyone giving a number is guessing. If you are interested in people’s guesses, fine…
Char says
Hi has anyone else submitted a claim through [claim firm]? As they’ve emailed me, asking me to tell Wonga, to send the money to them. So that they can take their fees out? Any advise would be greatly appreciated.
Sara (Debt Camel) says
I’ve not heard of that claim firm, when did yiu use them and are they still in business?
Char says
Hi I’ve received both emails off the firm in question and Wonga. Wonga have said they will be paying me direct to the same account I still have. I’ve tried clicking on the link to the firm and it says server not found? So I’m wondering if they’re are even a legitimate company.
Claire says
My bank details have not changed but my name and address has will this cause an issue with them making the payment?
Lynne says
Id have thought your name change might?
Sara (Debt Camel) says
Bank transfers are made to a sort code and account number. Name is not currently verified.
Darren says
Just to possibly ease any stress about the name, My wife and I got married 2 years ago and she is still down on all my bank transfers to her (for bills that go out her account), as her maiden name, even though her account now has our married name, so as Sara says, name doesn’t impact it.
Claire Carrie says
Thank you.
Natasha says
According to the email they sent me I will know how much I will receive via email at the end of jan.
We previously emailed you in relation to your successful claim in the Wonga administration. At the end of January, we will communicate by email the amount you will be due to receive as a dividend.
Stuart says
After accepting the offer but knowing it will be less, can we turn the next offer down if it is really low? Or have we accepted the mystery figure already?
Laura says
No that’s how much money there is and that’s what it is when shared equally!
Joanne Ingram says
Hi… i recieved an email months ago to say that my claim was successful and i also updated my bank details.
After reading this I have checked my emails and have not recieved one regarding payment at the end of January.. I have chevked my spam email too. Has anyone else not recieved anything yet?
Laura says
Yes lots in here. It seems like the email was sent in error because if you see the comments almost everyone who got it had already submitted details
Jaqueline says
Just waited on hold for 45 minutes only to speak to a very rude lady who stated we all received the same email and we should ignore it if it states they haven’t got our details – I tried to query that some clients had received emails stating their account details etc but still she stated we all received same mail and she wasn’t willing to discuss – she did eventually take my case number and confirmed they had my ID ….
hope this helps any of those people that can’t upload or have had t send it three times etc
Paul says
Still no email off them like a lot of people had Saturday, there just messing people about!!!
Gray says
That’s not true
Stephanie says
Some people seem to have trouble with changing bank details which brought this question to my mind about how an administration works: if my understanding is correct, redress creditors like us are last on the priority list so we are the last to be paid out of what is left; this in mind, what happens to money that cannot be paid, for example because of wrong bank details?
Sara (Debt Camel) says
Redress creditors are not “last on the list”. All unsecured creditors have exactly the same priority. If there are very small amounts of money left they can sometimes be donated to charity.
Stephanie says
Thanks for answering my question and clarifying. I’ve learnt a great deal from your site, I am much better informed now and feel I can make better choices, thank you so much.
Paul says
Ok so why are people getting emails and some not, why are they not confirming they are receiving our details, why when people are phoning them including myself are we getting negative attitude off them, if they would just sort it out properly then we would have this forum or a lot of people asking questions on here or am I just missing sumthing!!
Gray says
Why would they want to mess people about? We all have to wait just another 2 weeks its no use guessing about this and that, with the amount of emails they receive it would take forever to reply to all. They are sorting it out properly its their job to do so, it will all sort itself out you see.
Paul says
Ok we shall see…. and if your correct I’ll be the first one on here to post a apology!!!
Lynne says
Just got through to them. His words were ‘we’re nearly there with regard to payments’.
