There are three large UK databases aimed at alerting lenders to possible fraudulent applications for borrowing: National Hunter, Cifas and Sira.
If your name is on one of these connected with fraud you may find it difficult or impossible to take out credit and your bank account may be closed.
But sometimes the information on the databases may be wrong and you need to get it corrected.
In 2020, Cifas recorded over 185,000 cases of identity theft. The numbers in the first half of 2021 went up by 11% – this is a growing problem.
Contents
When should you check the fraud databases?
Many people will go their whole lives without ever needing to know anything about these fraud databases, but there are three situations where you may want to find out more.
1) You are being asked to supply more information
If you try to take out a new mobile contract or sign up in a shop for a 0% deal on a new carpet you are buying, then you are contacted later and asked to send proof of identity/proof of address, this may be a sign that your credit application has been flagged as needing more checks. The creditor could have been alerted to possible fraud concerns by running your applications through one of the fraud databases.
(NB I’m talking about something unusual here – if you apply to open a bank account or a savings account, you normally have to provide proof of identity/address. This isn’t fraud prevention – although it does help with that – it is part of the standard money-laundering checks banks have to make.)
If this happens once it’s probably no big deal – after all you do want lenders to make checks otherwise there will be a lot more identity theft than there is at the moment. But if you find it’s happening a lot, you might decide to find what is on the fraud databases that could be causing this – see below for how to do this.
2) You can’t imagine why you have been rejected for credit
If you are turned down when you apply for a loan, credit card or anything that requires a credit check, you need to think why. There are many possibilities and although having a problem entry on a fraud database is one, it is pretty unlikely.
Check out all these more common reasons first:
- debt problems such as CCJs, defaults, late payments on your records with the three Credit Reference Agencies (CRAs). You have to check all three of them, here’s how;
- check the personal information on your CRA records is correct: names, address, old addresses, on the electoral roll;
- credit score problems with anyone you are linked to financially? Try to de-link from anyone you no longer live with or who has a poor record;
- borrowing too much for your income. This is a common reason for being refused a large consolidation loan even if your credit scores are good;
- have you got too much spare credit?
- too many recent credit applications? Don’t make any more for a few months!
- little or no credit history? It can be hard to get anyone to accept you at first. Try a low-vaue monthly mobile contract. If they don’t accept you, consider a “bad credit” credit card – but these can be traps for the unwary.
- previous history with the lender. If you had debt problems a long while ago, that lender may still have the records even if they are no longer on your credit file.
But if your credit record appears fine and there don’t appear to be any other reasons why you should be turned down then it is a good idea to check the fraud databases, see below.
3) You have been the victim of identity theft
Look out for anything unusual:
- debts on your CRA reports that you don’t recognise;
- getting letters/emails/phone calls from lenders or debt collectors about credit you didn’t ask for / accounts you don’t know you have / goods you didn’t order. Even if these say that you have been refused credit, follow up on this as the fraudster may try again and succeed;
- payments from your bank account or credit cards that you don’t recognise;
- regular monthly bank account or credit card statements do not arrive;
- a debit or credit card expires and you haven’t been sent a replacement.
If you spot one identity theft problem, there may be others. You need to check all three CRA files for entries that you don’t recognise and it’s a good idea to check the fraud databases.
See Loans taken out in your name for details of one reader’s problem and my suggestions for tackling it.
How to check the fraud databases
National Hunter
National Hunter keeps records of credit applications to the 50 lenders who use its system.
Lenders check this when they receive a new application, looking for inconsistencies. The idea is that someone who is applying for credit in your name may not know your date of birth, middle name, marital status, income etc, so if a National Hunter check throws up something which doesn’t match, the application can be looked at in more detail.
Obviously this could generate flags where there isn’t a real problem – using a nickname, not a full name or if you have just received a large pay-rise. The aim is for the lender to make further enquiries, not automatically reject an application.
To check what information National Hunter has about you, make a Subject Access Request, which they will reply to within 40 days. Use the National Hunter SAR form and enclose the proof of identity required – this needs to be sent to National Hunter.
This information may show nothing interesting – all the applications look correct to you. Just because your application is on the database doesn’t mean that it is suspected of fraud.
But if there are applications that you didn’t make, this could be identity theft and you need to look into it further.
National Hunter retains information depending on how the lender flagged the information:
- for 6 months – applications marked with an overall status of ‘Clear’, i.e. the lender has no concerns on the data provided within the application;
- for 3 years – applications marked with an overall status of ‘Inconsistency’, i.e. the lender has identified a discrepancy;
- for 6 years – application marked with an overall status of ‘Refer’, i.e. a National Hunter member checking this record can contact the member who added the info for more details. The reason for the refer status is usually included.
Cifas
When a Cifas member identifies a fraud, a warning is placed on the Cifas database. This shows the name used in the fraudulent application.
Cifas says:
The National Fraud Database is simple and effective. All Cifas members record instances of actual and attempted fraud against their organisation to the National Fraud Database, enabling other members to search against their data.
When members match against data on the National Fraud Database and confirm an actual or attempted fraud, they file their own case.
If this is your name, it does NOT necessarily mean that you are suspected of fraud, it may be that someone else has used your name. So if you apply to another Cifas member, they will get a message saying Cifas – Do Not Reject – Validation Required. This could be why you are being asked to supply additional information when you apply for credit. By requiring extra proof of who you are, it is protecting you against further fraud.
To check if Cifas is holding any information with your name on it, you should make a Subject Access Request, using the Cifas SAR form and enclose your proof of identity. Send this to Cifas – they have to reply within a month but aim to reply within a week. There is no charge for this.
Cifas retains information relating to fraud for six years.
Victim of Impersonation data is retained for 13 months.
Sira
The National Sira Fraud Prevention database holds c 1,500,000 records. If you want to see if any information is held about you, complete the SIRA SAR form. and supply the relevant id information.
Preventing identity theft in future – Cifas “Protective Registration”
If you have had identity theft problems, or perhaps you are just worried that you could have if you know some personal information has been stolen, then to try to prevent them from happening in the future you can ask Cifas for Protective Registration:
When you request Protective Registration, we place a warning flag against your name and other personal details in our National Fraud Database. This tells any organisation that uses Cifas data to pay special attention when your details are used to apply for their products or services. Knowing you’re at risk, they’ll carry out extra checks to make sure it’s really you applying, and not a fraudster using your details.
This will make it harder for anyone to take out credit in your name. You won’t be refused credit because you have asked for Protective Registration, but the process will be longer. You may have to provide additional information.
Protective Registration lasts for two years.
Correcting wrong information on the databases
Fraud databases record the information they are given by lenders and insurers. If you think the information is wrong. you first need to complain and ask the lender to correct it, not National Hunter or Cifas.
An example of this could be that a mortgage lender recorded “hidden buy to let” against your mortgage application on the National Hunter database. This could result in you being rejected for other mortgages.
If the lender refuses to correct information, you can complain to the ICO or take your complaint to the Financial Ombudsman. If the problem is with the Cifas database, you can also ask Cifas to look at the issue.
The Financial Ombudsman gave some examples of cases involving a Cifas in this newsletter.
I think people often feel sceptical that the ombudsman will help them or “just side with the bank”. Whether your complaint is upheld will depend on the details of the case, but here is one example where the Ombudsman made it clear that:
I also need to consider whether the report to CIFAS was made fairly. On this point, [the bank] needs to have more than a suspicion or concern. It has to show it had reasonable grounds to believe that a fraud or financial crime had been committed or attempted and that the evidence would support this being reported to the authorities.
Banking when you have a fraud marker against your name
This can be very difficult.
If you know the entry on the database is a mistake, don’t panic and apply for a bank account to every bank you have ever heard of. That will probably just get you a pile of rejections.
You may need to find a way to live with the marker while the complaint goes through – and afterwards if your complaint is not upheld.
One option is to get help from a relative or your partner. Could your salary be paid into your mum’s bank account? Then she could pay the important bills from it by standing order and transfer the rest into a pre-paid debit card in your name.
You need to check out the costs for the different options here. If you think you have found a good one, I would love to hear about it – pop the details in the comments below.
A “Victim of Impersonation” marker is not a problem
Cifas says:
The warning is there to make it clear you are the genuine, innocent party, and that you have been (or suspect you may be) the victim of an identity theft.
Any organisation that subsequently receives that warning will see the phrase ‘Cifas – Do Not Reject – Validation Required’. It reminds them that extra precautions must be taken to ensure that the application or facility is genuine, protecting you from further fraud.
This does not harm your credit record or cause any problems with your banking.
The marker remains on your record for 13 months. You shouldn’t try to get this marker removed – it is there to protect you.

Santander added my name to CIFAS and Nhunter database. halifax added it to Nhunter database only.
this was an error and after [edited: arguing] for 6 months both banks apologised and removed the markers.
They offered me couple of hundred pounds for my inconvenience. however, my losses exceeds 6 figures as the home survey report on one the house i tried buying during this nightmare says the house value will go up £100,000 when renovated.
[Edited:]
Do I now have any options to take them to court and How?
are there any specific law firms that have expertise in this area?
Many Thanks

Sara (Debt Camel) says
I agree £200 is too low an offer. I suggest talking your case to the Finacial Ombudsman.
I am sure a house may have gone up 100k in value, but realistically that would have required you to spend a significant amount of money and time so that would not be pure profit. There is no way you would get that much compensation.
But it would be reasonable to ask to be reimbused for at least your lost costs – legal, survey, searches etc.
AJ says
Financial Ombudsman have people without any experience looking into matters as a third party customer service agents and often sides with the banks/companies
therefore i m not really confident.
and the cost of renovation was nothing more than 10-15K it was generally a very good deal as both husband and wife died and family wasn’t interested to keeping the big house. also i have invoices due in thousands for advisors who helped me fight the banks.
i got a mortgage approved within 10 days of removal of my name from the database. i lost so much of my deposit to the rent which i could have avoided which my rent is twice the mortgage payments.
the mortgage was approved in the first place and near to the exchange of contracts santander pulled out
the distressed caused also led me to depression. i have been taking therapies and aniti depressants for a year now.
whole family turned on me thinking i had done something wrong
the banks could have avoided all of this by asking more questions instead the decided it was easier to just out my name on database not knowing how much it can affects someone’s life.

Hi Ali
How we can fight with the bank, i have similar views on Financial Ombudsmen, they are not helpful. What are the other options we have ?
Please let me know.
Thanks
Irfan
Sara (Debt Camel) says
As he explained, Ali J got his defaults removed by convincing the bank they were wrong.
He did not “fight with the bank”.
I suggest you follow the same route. Try to convince the bank and if that doesn’t work, go to the Financial Ombudsman.
Your only other option is court. To do that you need professional advice from a solicitor.

Hi, me and my partner are in similar situation. We have just been refused a mortgage and after request of info from N Hunter it became apparent that our names have been flagged up to lenders.
I am now looking for the ways to contact bank and get hem to remove information. It was also Santander who flagged us up.
Can you suggest how and who you contacted
Ali J says
Mortgage and loan applications
Santander operations
Bridle road
Bootle
L304gb
I totally understand what you are going through. Dont stress, take things slow and write to them. It will really help you if you can get the CiFas report as it will have more information about why they have flagged your name.
I hope things get sorted as soon as possible.
Goodluck 👍
Noman says
Hi AJ,
Good to see that your name has been removed from these databases. Halifax has put my name on National hunter stating inconsistency on salary, as me and my wife both have 2 jobs. They didn’t ask any questions or anything and just put our name on nhunter database.
I have written to Halifax and they didn’t give any reason so i went to Ombudsman. Just wondering which advisers did you use as i am desperate to buy specially now that stamp duty is being removed up to 500K which will save me a good amount of money.
Did you win your case through ombudsman or directly through bank ? I am waiting on ombudsman to come back to me with bank reason and banks didnt tell me anything.
Thanks

Hi Sara .i applied for mortgage through a broker in 2017 offer came & vendor refused to sell the house to me . Mortgage held there . before I’ve found another property Santander send me a letter the mortgage not available. I’ve contacted them the reason. They told its head office decisions. Until this year I’ve tried with a different broker . different bank . underwriter declined. I found out I’ve got false income on my National Hunter. I’ve requested from Santander to remove the entry . They refuse to do so . Fraud done by broker with out me knowing . Now I have difficulty to option mortgage. what’s the solution to remove.
Many thanks if you reply me plz
Sara (Debt Camel) says
If you think the fraud entry is unfair, you can take your complaint about Santander to the Financial Ombudsman. This has to be done within 6 months of your complaint being rejected by Santander.
Ali R says
Thanks Sara you are very helpful
A guy name is Ali J had two entry on the National Hunter . As he said after 6 months of argument they removed. I wonder how can I get hold of them to use he’s method . Left message here a few times. Had no reply.
I wish you could help me in this matter too .
Looking forward to hear from you.
Kind regards
Ali
Sara (Debt Camel) says
He said in his comment that “both banks apologised and removed the markers”. So he persuaded the banks that it was wrong to add this marker. He probably doesn’t read this page any more.
Ali R says
Thank you Sara
He did say that & how he fight with banks . That’s what I wanted to know . I wonder if any email address left here that I could use to email him .
Thanks
Sara (Debt Camel) says
No sorry, I won’t pass people’s personal email addresses on.
But this probably wouldn’t help you anyway. Each of these complaints is completely individual. The reason he felt the marker was unfair will probably have nothing to do with your case. there are no “magic words” to use here, no piece of legislation to quote. You just need to say why you have been treated unfairly.
And as Santander have already rejected your complaint, go to the Ombudsman.
Ali R says
Thanks Sara I’ve understand it .
I was thinking what was he’s way of faught lots of way to fight them . But it’s good to know how .

Hi I am in a situation where 2 years ago, I stupidly got involved with the wrong people and fraud was done on my Barclays account. My account was closed and At that time I had a Santander student account I never used but started using that instead. 2 years on everything is going fine and I call up Santander one day enquiring about an error on my balance, they said everything would be good and then 10 mins later I get a call that they are blocking acccess to my account because of a marker from CIFAS. they’ll let me know what happens in the next few days but I’m scared they’ll close this account too. It’s been 2 years and i have done nothing wrong since, I’ve been good Paid my bills, even opened savings and a help to buy USA with no problem then this occurs. I just got paid from work as well and can only take money out from branches at the moment. I’m stressing out because I think they think I’m some sort of risk. I wanna know if there’s a even a chance they’ll let me continue banking with them?
Sara (Debt Camel) says
Possibly, but I can’t say it is likely. A bank can decide to close someone’s account if they want.

I left the UK back in 2015 and came back recently at the time I only had two credit cards in my name for which some payments were missing because of my long absence from the country. My time away has caused me a few problems one my account has been closed and I have 3 CCJ in my name. Second I went to open an account in a few banks but after opening it they close it the next day even the accounts with very basic facilities and bad credit. I am really worried and stressed out because I don’t know what to do. I checked with clear score and I can see there are multiple accounts and credit card opened and closed in my name. Without a Bank account, my survival is really difficult at the moment. Any advice would really help. I am wondering if my name is red-flagged and Is there a way that the red flag can be removed?
Sara (Debt Camel) says
If you have applied for a basic bank account, and been refused, you should ask the bank why.
If there are entries on your clear Score report that you don’t recognise and you think may be fraud, contact ClearScore and tell them: https://contact.clearscore.com/hc/en-us

I have recently Applied to a bank called HOLVI for a business account and they initially accepted my account online but when they requested the ID verification they came back to me via email stating they where closing my account due to a cifas fraud marker on my file with CIFAS.
So I applied for my file under a SAR from Cifas and I received the paperwork last Saturday. It stated that back in 2015/2016 I had been the victim of ID fraud and a person or persons had applied for various accounts in my name using false details, it was listed by Cifas as a “False Identity Marker” I was already fully aware of the markers on my file and the fact they did not affect my recent credit applications because the credit companies always asked for further information from me to verify it was me applying etc. HOLVI did not do this , they re required to do this by law and not just reject the application out of hand . The attitude and replies I have had from Holvi are basically calling me a fraudster. This can’t be correct surely??
Sara (Debt Camel) says
well you can complain if you want, but it may be simpler to find a bank that actually wants your business>

Hi Sara,
My bank accounts were recently closed without notice. I had made a few cash deposits just prior to that. The bank wouldn’t tell me anything as to why they did this and treated me like a criminal!
They took 3 months to release my funds which have just recently been credited to my new account. The description next to the funds credited in my new account statement shows” Suspected Fraud”. Could they have reported me to CIFAS based just on mere suspicions?
Sara (Debt Camel) says
I don’t know, I suggest you ask Cifas what information they hold about you.

I had a CIFAS Marker (first party fraud) against my name in July 2014 due to a co-tenant using my details to obtain credit. I have unfortunately lived with it and I understand that this stays on for 6 years. Will my name automatically drop off the register or do I need to apply for it to be taken off on the 6th anniversary next month?
Sara (Debt Camel) says
I haven’t heard of anyone having to apply for this to be done.
Anthony says
Thanks. Shall I take it that it’ll automatically drop off next month? I haven’t found any CIFAS article or FAQ that addresses this.

You could ask Cifas? Or send them a SAR (see article above) after a month to see if your name is still there?

Cifas has removed my fraud marker so will I be able to open up a bank account elsewhere?

As I have all the evidence for employment details plus what would the best root to take . Looking forward to hear from you.

if you think it’s wrong then you are right to challenge it. If NatWest refuse to remove the National Hunter record, then you can take your complaint to the Finacial Ombudsman.

Hi Sara,
A friend of mine was listed on CIFA under the fraud category around 2 years ago. Reason being was that legitimate money was transferred to her account from a sanctioned country. She showed evidence including a certified letter from a solicitor of that country that the funds were legitimate (it was a sale of a property) but because it came from a sanctioned country, they put her on the cifa list. It’s quite unfair really… anyways, she’s had a few things going on and we are now thinking of complaining with the bank (after 2 years of the incident) then taking it on to CIFA if the complaint won’t be resolved. I was just wondering, will my friend be able to open a bank account after 6 years (if CIFA or the ombudsman take the bank’s side)? Please note this is Metro bank we are talking about. Or will my friend be banned for life from opening a bank account unless she sorts it out with CIFA or the Ombudsman?
And are the steps to proceed as follows:-
Complain to bank
Complain to Cifa
Take it on to Ombudsman
Or is it best to instruct a solicitor?
Thanks.
Sara (Debt Camel) says
I would skip the complain to CIFAS stage, so complain to the bank and complain to the Ombudsman.

Hi Sara,
I hope you’re well. Me and my wife applied for the mortgage in November 2019 through Halifax and they refused the application. our broker again applied the mortgage trough HSBC as he said you will get mortgage through them and we got a refusal through them as well. I spoken to on e of my friend and he advised me to check my name under CIFAS and National Hunter. I found out that Halifax has put a INCONSISTENCY marker against our names in National Hunter and reason they put is inconsistent salary. Me and my wife both have 2nd jobs and we are not sure whether they have put a marker because of that or what. we asked Halifax for the reason and disputed that we can prove all the salary we are receiving etc if you would have asked us. On our complaint to Halifax they refused to give us the reason why they have added this marker on National Hunter and refused to remove it. I went to ombudsman in February 2020. I received and email confirmation about my case in march and then an another email end of April saying i need to wet sign the complaint form as i applied online. Me and my wife signed the form and sent it through email and got a response that i will take approximately 4 months before they assign a case worker. My question is does it take that long or what are my options ? Its been more than 3 months and i am still waiting. can i escalate this ?
Thanks
Sara (Debt Camel) says
You have done the right thing by taking your complaint to the Ombudsman.
I don’t think there is a way to speed this up.
Noman says
Thanks Sarah for your quick response, i appreciate that. Its a sjame that i can’t escalate this despite been waiting for 3 months just to hear from a case worker. God knows how long it will take bank to accept they were on wrong as they didn’t ask us anything and placed the marker. I will wait till end of this month and will chase ombudsman if i don’t hear from them. I will keep everyone posted about the outcome of my case.
Sara (Debt Camel) says
Most of the delay so far has probably been the Ombudsman waiting for the lender to send over the case file. In lockdown this has been slower than normal.
good luck and let us know how it goes?
Noman says
I understand that these are not normal times. I will give a nudge to Ombudsman towards end of this month and see what they have to say. I will definitely keep everyone posted.
Thanks
Noman says
Hi Sara,
Just want a bit of second thought. I chased the Ombudsman that i have applied in end of Feb, and then they asked to wet sign the form in End of April, since than no update. They came back to me and said my case is in a queue to be allocated to an adjudicator to investigate. I asked how far i am in the queue and they replied that it is currently taking 4 months for the adjudicator to be assigned.
My questions are: Should i count the 4 months when i first made the application or when they asked me to wet sign the form. If its from start than my 4 months are already completed today. If its from wet sign then it will be end of August.
Do you think i should ask them when my 4 months are getting completed and is there any way i can escalate things once 4 months wait is over ?
I hope to hear from you soon.
Thanks
Sara (Debt Camel) says
I don’t know, there probably isn’t a practical way of you getting this speeded up. I suggest a polite enquiry once a month.

I have just read that some employers can now add ex employees details to these databases marking them as potential fraud risks even if there was no investigation or evidence that a fraudulent act or conduct had ever been committed. . More worryingly, is it right that employers can mark an individual that resigned from their job and leave them blissfully unaware this is why they are now being rejected for new roles, tenancy agreements, bank accounts etc?! Does anyone else not think this system is open to abuse? It is not just the banks and credit lenders that have access to and make decisions based on this data. I fear it could be a very effective tool to further victimise disgruntled employees who may have resigned as a result of some other issue or dispute, nothing at all to do with fraud!! Who do you complain to if you find you have been added to list by a previous employer? Many people would probably not find out until well after the time limit allowed to claim in an employment tribunal? Interested to hear what others think or be corrected if my understanding is wrong??
Sara (Debt Camel) says
Where did you read this?

On a site advertising jobs in the civil service, it states that as part of the application process they will run checks against these databases and specifically look for entries made by previous employers flagging their previous employee as a potential fraud risk even if they resigned with no fraud allegation being upheld or proved. I read this on jobs adverts for the foreign and commonwealth Office.
Sara (Debt Camel) says
It sounds odd. but if it hasn’t affected you, I suggest you don’t worry about it.
Tammy says
As a newly qualified lawyer it worries me greatly…

Cifas fraud entry on my credit score is removed so will I be able to open a bank again and what if they see my previous reports will they reject the application?
Sara (Debt Camel) says
If that was the only reason you were Rejected fir a bank account, you should now be able to get one. I suggest you apply to one bank you have not previously applied to. And Jc your credit score is poor, apply for a basic bank account.
Zdb mani says
I recently had a wrongfully applied marker removed, do you know how long it takes to update on the credit report because apparently it isn’t instantly. I want to know how long I should wait before applying for a new account

Dear Sara,
I was accepted for mortgage in Halifax bank then it was cancelled last minute whist waiting for a surveyor . Halifax then put my name in national Hunter. I have requested for my file from them through freedom of access information, i complained to Halifax they declined my complain and ask me to go to ombudsman if i am not happy . I have put a complain to ombudsman. I also got the mortgage with santader . my application was in September 2019 and santader approved my mortgage in October . I was told by Halifax being on National Hunter will not affect me . i have realised this is not true because I applied for car loan and it was rejected . my experian credit is excellent i no have issue with credit score.
is there anything else i need to do?
kind

Sending your complaint to the Financial Ombudsman is the best thing you can do at the moment.
Noman says
Hi Susan,
Sorry to hear about this. I had the same issue with Halifax as they put my name on National Hunter. I am now waiting for Ombudsman to look into this issue. There is something clearly wrong with them.
Contact Ombudsman asap as it takes time.

Hi Norman every day I think of Halifax I feel so bad and i really dislike the bank. The only crime I did was to walk in that bank and made the application. The only thing I can think of is I have had Halifax bank for a long time but my wages were going to Barclays and I paid my bills from my Halifax account . when my friend told me that Halifax has a better mortgage deals I moved my wages from being paid in Barclays to Halifax therefore for six months my wages were being paid in Halifax before I applied for my mortgage . surely there is something wrong with them,How can I be on fraud Data base for changing where my wages are being paid? Norman did they tell you why they put you there because I dont even know why they put me there i am only speculating. I am waiting for access of freedom of information to send me the my file then I will be able to see what they have put there.
I will fight even if it means to go to court I am ready
Noman says
Hi S.R,
Halifax didnt tell me they just said they can not give me a mortgage, my broker applied through Santander and it got declined there, despite my and my wife credit ratings being top notch.
One of my friend suggested to get the information from National Hunter and CIFAS. I received CIFAS information and there wasn’t anything on there. Then i received email from National Hunter and i can see a market from Halifax suggesting “Inconsistency with Salary”. I have no clue what inconsistency they ave found as they never contacted me to provide any extra documentation or neither they contacted our employers. So i have gone to Ombudsman and still waiting to hear back from them.
I would suggest as soon as you receive your national Hunter report, go to Halifax and say what is the reason for putting this marker. If they reject, go straight to Ombudsman.
I hope this helps.

Hi Norman
Thanks for your advice when I already made a formal complain to Halifax and they declined to remove the marker and they issued me with the final letter so if I am not satisfied I could take my cace to ombudsman. I have already taken the case to ombudsman I am now waiting to get the report from National Hunter then I will take it from there. I just need to know the reason.
Thanks for your advice once again.

I have received my file report from National Hunter. I have written to Sara on this forum please if you get a minute read what I have written to Sara and let me know what you think.

Noman says
Hi S R,
This is just ridiculous. Bank has messed up so mad and they are not willing to help. You have to send a complaint to Ombudsman with the National Hunter report and i would say attach your passport copy, your utility bills under your name, your salary slip showing your name and the corresponding bank statements to reflect the salary being coming in your account.
The only fear i have is that it is a long journey. Once you submit your application their is a wait of around 4 months and then they will allocate someone to look into your case. But good news is Bank doesn’t stand a chance and you can claim some sort of compensation as well.
Best of luck and please keep us posted. I will be chasing Ombudsman towards end of this week as my 4 months finish around that time.
Thanks
SR says
Hi Sara
If i dont get a positive answer from ombudsmen is there anywhere else i can take me case?
Kind Regards
SR
Sara (Debt Camel) says
The Ombudsman is a two stage process. if you don’t get the answer you want from the first “adjudicator/investigator” stage you can ask for it to be looked at “by an Ombudsman”.
After that in theory you can go to court, but it is usually a good idea to get professional help with that.
PS you put your full name on again – can you make sure you delete that before submitting a comment please.
S.R says
Dear Sara,
Thanks for your quick response . Yes I will wait I will follow the whole process if it will need me to go to court I will go. I feel this bank has destroyed my life .I have always looked after my finances I have never missed any payments and all over sudden I am in the fraud Data base for making an application. its shocking and very disturbing
Noman says
Hi S.R,
It is a long process, but please do keep us posted. I will share the outcome here as well as soon as i hear back from Ombudsman.

Good morning Norman
Have you heard from ombudsman yet? I received my report from National Hunter. It was shocking to me as it stated inconsistent on my date of birth. My Address. My home phone no and my account details. This is all nonsense. This is clearly wrong all my details are correct and I did application in the branch and I took all my original documents.
The ombudsman is taking forever to contact me. I still don’t have a case worker.
Please let me know if you have heard respond from them.
Kind regards

Noman says
Hi S R
At least good news is that this wont stand in front of Ombudsman and they will ask the Bank to remove these markers.
I have sent 2 emails so far to Ombudsman and the only reply i am getting is that a case worker will be assigned soon. They told me that they have requested a file from the bank and i should wait till case worker is been assigned. So fingers crossed. I will send an other email in first week of October.
I would say send a polite email every month. That is the only thing we can do.
best of luck and keep us updated.
SR says
Hi Norman
Yes I will keep you posted as soon as I hear from National Hunter.
Thanks once again. I was hoping that people who have been posting their issues here and they have had the marker removed would have shared with us on how they did it.

Sara (Debt Camel) says
1) people who have won their case – or lost it – may have little interest in these comments any more and may simply not have seen questions addressed to them.
2) these cases are VERY individual. There is unlikely to have been a simple argument that worked for one person that would then apply to many others. So although you could get comfort from know that other people have got these fraud warnings removed, asking how may well not be of assistance to your case. And could be a red herring.
S R says
Hi sara
I received my file report from National Hunter yesterday. This report actually shocked me. It stated inconsistenty on my date of birth my home address and my landline telephone number. This is a big surprise to me. When I did mortgage application with Halifax I took my 3 months payslips, my 3 moths utility bills as proof of address and my passport. All these documents were originals and not photo copies. I did my application in the branch with the branch manager who took the copies and gave me back my original documents I have lived this address for over 15 years and it is the same home I was looking for a mortgage to buy. My landline has always remained the same and of course my date of birth does not change. . National Hunter report also stated conflicting salary. Again this is a shock to me. I am a care manager and my wages have remained the same for the last 4 years as I am on fixed wage. Surely how could this be? How could Halifax destroy my name over unfounded information? I am really upset about this situation. Sara can you please advise me on how to go about this now I have received the information from National Hunter.
Thanks
Regards
S R
Sara (Debt Camel) says
I think that all sound positive for your case at the Ombudsman.
I suggest you email the Ombudsman saying you now have the information from your National Hunter record and it shows that Halifax were not careful about your application and they must have made mistakes in their checking because there are so many errors in what NH has complaed to the information you gave Halifax – and list these errors.

I have been the victim of fraud and a cifas marker was placed on my CR by HSBC. I don’t object to the marker but would like to know if the ‘victim of impersonation’ marker will remain on my CR and if so for how long. It seems to be a deterrent to lenders even if it shouldn’t be.
Sara (Debt Camel) says
It shouldn’t be a deterrent to lenders, it just means a lender will contact you when an application is received to make sure it really did come from you.

Hi,
I had been forced into a contract through duress and threat from a third party. I’ve now got a CIFAS Marker on my file which has closed all my accounts. The finance company said they can’t do anything and that CIFAS may be able to help. Is it true that they can’t remove the marker due to this issue? Are their hands really tied ?
Sara (Debt Camel) says
The finance company
which finance company – the lender for the contract you were forced into?
have you had debt advice about this?
ANONYMUS says
I was forced into it by a third party individual under threat of force. I.e the vehicle taken out was not for my personal use or needed by me. I’ve explained this to the finance company and they don’t want to hear me out or investigate the matter all they want me to know is that they have satisfied cifas guidelines as application fraud was present. What shall I do?
Sara (Debt Camel) says
Have you reported this to the police? talked to a debt adviser?
If not, I suggest you talk to National Debtline on 0808 808 4000.
Anonymus says
I haven’t reported it due to fear of repercussions from third party. What can I do? To get this removed ?
Sara (Debt Camel) says
Talk to National Debtline. but if you aren’t prepared to report it to the police, there may be little that can be done.
ANONYMUS says
Do police have any power to remove the marker? Will they investigate it without my consent?
Sara (Debt Camel) says
I can’t give you advice. You need to talk about all the details to a debt adviser. Please call National Debtline.

Hello, I applied for Protective Registration last week and I was wondering if this will deter employers from employing me? I’ve applied for a job in the civil service and they stated that any applicant with their details in the Internal Fraud Register will be rejected employment. Will that be the case for me?
Sara (Debt Camel) says
If the only thing on the fraud databases is that you have been the victim of identity theft, I don’t think an employer would be interested.

Hi Sara,
In November 2018, Vanquis closed my CC account and advised me to contact Cifas. I then realised Halifax put a marker on my name saying I received fraudulent funds in an account which I held with them. These funds was meant to be a payback of monies owed by someone I knew. I went on to dispute this with them and had financial ombudsman on board. They couldn’t help me in the end as I could not provide the ID of the person that made the transfer about 6 months later.
I have since been unable to open a high street bank account and credit cards but I still get approved for Online based banks, store cards and loans. After interval of 6months I try my luck with high street bank accounts but no success so far. My credit report looks fair 576 out of 700 on credit Karma and no indication of FIFA’s marker on the report.
Recently I bought a car from Mercedes Benz on PCP, I failed the credit check with Mercedes but Blackhorse (who are literally the same as Lloyd’s bank) accepted my application about a week after they declined my bank account application and I have the car now for over 3 months.
Why would Lloyd’s bank accept me for a car loan but refuse to offer me a bank account where I intend to save my money despite the cifas marker?
With the Marker still on do you think I’ll be accepted for mortgage?
Sara (Debt Camel) says
I have no idea why Blackhorse accepted you for credit. If you have a large salary and a large deposit and not too much debt, I suggest you talk to a good broker, but this is a very difficult mortgage market and you may struggle.

Hi Sara,
I recently applied for a BTL mortgage with Post Office mortgages and was declined. I didn’t understand why, so I asked them and they refused to tell me. After this I started experiencing issues with my credit so got a Hunters report and it stated ‘inconsistency’ against my Post Office Mortgage application. As a footnote it states “misuse of mortgaged property”. The property I was mortgaging had a residential mortgage, but the reason for my application was that I had tenants in there and I was switching it across. Two weeks after the mortgage was rejected I applied for a consent to let with my existing lender, which has been granted for 12 months. I spoke to Bank of Ireland (who are the lenders for Post Office Mortgages) and they have refused to remove the marker. I have now raised this with the ombudsman, who is looking into it, but I’m not sure how that will play out.
What are my options? Is it worth going to court? If so, on what basis? If I don’t go to court, am I right that these records will be completely clear after three years.
Thanks
Mohammed

I think it’s best to wait for the Ombudsman decision. If you win, great. If you lose You will know more at that point about the case against you so you can take a more informed decision at that point.

Hello.
I would like to know how to clear a friends name from the fraud database. He used the office that specialises in helping people find insurances. As my friends car insurance was about to expire they found him another one and set it all up for him. He paid them for their services and didn’t think anything else of it. About two months after he got a call from the car insurance asking him how he did his insurance and obviously he explained he used this office and thats when they said they were going to cancel his insurance policy because they didnt accept third parties doing the policy instead of him. My friend explained he didn’t know that thats was not aloud and trusted the office that set up his insurance as thats what they do for a living. But the insurance company cancelled his insurance. They did ask who the office was and their phone number and proof of the payment to that office and he provided them with the information but nothing else was said. My friend then contacted the office and explained what had happened and they said he should have said that he did the policy and there was nothing they could do. So now he can’t get his car insured and his name is on the fraud database. Could you please help on how to get this sorted? Thanks in advance
Sara (Debt Camel) says
I suggest he goes to his local Citizens Advicd for help with this.

Hi Sara,
I have chased Ombudsman yesterday and finally received a reply after 8 months from investigator who is dealing my case. He said he has spoken to Halifax and they agreed to remove the markers from National Hunter. He said “I will be in touch soon to issue my formal view, but these markers should’ve already been removed.”
Should i just wait for his formal letter or email ? Do you think i can ask for the compensation from the Bank ? Do you think asking the compensation can delay things ? Like as mentioned by Ombudsman that bank has accepted to remove the Markers, can they then contest it if i ask for compensation ?Also how long will it take National Hunter to clear the markers ? Should i apply for my files from National Hunter after receiving a formal view from Ombudsman ?
Thanks
Sara (Debt Camel) says
If Halifax have agreed to remove the markers for you and your wife that is great. I cannot imagine they will change their mind.
I don’t know how long this takes to do though. It may be Halifax send updates to NH in a batch once a month.
I think if you want to ask for some compensation you should do it now. It isn’t likely to be a large amount.
Noman says
Hi Sara,
Thanks for your quick response. As you know I was chasing Ombudsman every month by sending them email. Yesterday when i sent the email i received the reply about Halifax agreed to remove the markers and Investigator said he will soon issue my formal view but markers should be removed. I have few questions.
Should i again ask NH for Subject Access form information once i receive an official letter from Ombudsman.
Do you think now i can go back to Halifax and say i want to again apply for the mortgage so please let me know what documents you would need me to submit for our 2nd jobs so we don’t end up in this situation again ?
In regards to compensation, Halifax have waisted almost 1 year of my time and the distress they have caused. What do you think is a reasonable amount.
Many Thanks
Sara (Debt Camel) says
I would leave it a month before asking NH for a SAR.
I suppose you could go back to Halifax. How large a % deposit do you have? This is a much more difficult mortgage market. I would be inclined to go to a good broker and explain your whole situation.
I would be surprised if you would get more than a few hundred in compensation.
Noman says
I would wait for official letter from Ombudsman and then will give a month before asking NH for SAR.
For the price range I am looking I would say i have 20% deposit as a first time buyer and all savings are in my and my wife personal saving accounts which we have saved over the years.
Do you think it is a good idea to again contact Halifax for mortgage ?
I know you do not provide advise on this forum, but where can i find a good reputable broker as my last experience wasn’t very good.
Thanks again for your quick response.
Sara (Debt Camel) says
London & Country and Habito are well-regarded. You need to explain in detail what went wrong with your last application even after the NH marker is removed.
Noman says
Thanks Sara.
I would definitely explain everything to the person i am dealing with.
Just one last question for today, is it okay to go back to Halifax first and ask them what documents should I need to provide for our 2nd job in order to avoid this again ? or you think just avoid Halifax and find another lender and explain everything in detail to broker what went wrong last time so they can make sure everything is perfect this time.
Many Thanks
Sara (Debt Camel) says
It’s up to you. I am not sure what went wrong the first time, so I can’t really guess.
Noman says
The bank didn’t accept 2nd Job as it was new at that time. I started that job 3-4 months prior to application. Instead of asking any questions they refused the application and also placed the marker.
I am still in both jobs and now its been over a year i am doing 2 jobs. So my situation is same as of last time, the only difference is for my 2nd job now i can provide payslips for last 12 months.
Noman says
Hi Sara,
I have received the official email from Ombudsman stating that bank has accepted to remove the marker and also accepted that they will give me £300 in compensation as this has caused me distressed and waste of time.
Investigator said he believes this is a fair offer. He as given me 10 working days to contact him in regards to his decision.
My question is: If i say this compensation is very low and bank should consider what i have lost in potentially that house which would have definitely gone up in price in 12 months. Will this prolong my case and markers will stay in place till we reach an agreement or no matter what markers would have been removed and i can apply for mortgage meanwhile discussing the more compensation option from Bank through Ombudsman
Please share your experience and thoughts.
Sara (Debt Camel) says
I did say that compensation was likely to be low. I am sorry, I have no idea how likely this is to be increased if you object to it. or what timescale it would take. I would hope the marker would be removed straight away, but you would need to talk to your adjudicator to confirm if that is what will happen.
SR says
Hi Norman,
Congratulations to you and your wife too. It’s been a long journey but at least there is a light at the end of the tunnel. If I were you I would avoid Halifax lke a plague. You can see my case and yours no one bothered to check and we were put on national hunter for no reason whatsoever. I couldn’t even get bounce back loan which was very straight forward just because of that marker. To make the matter worse my letter stated very clearly being on national hunter will not affect my credit which as you and I know is not true. I am waiting for the official letter from Halifax and then I will write a formal letter to Halifax requesting for compensation because they have accepted liability.
That’s my plan moving forward.
I will update you accordingly on this forum.
Again thanks Sara so much for your support throughout this very stressful journey.

Hi Ali,
I had Inconsistency on Hunter report which they put when i applied for the mortgage. The reason they put was inconsistency in salary details. My situation is that i have 2 jobs and at the time of applying for my mortgage i just had 4 monthly payslips for my 2nd job. Instead of rejecting or not considering my 2nd income (for whatever reason as i still don’t know that) they put the marker and refused the application. I contacted Financial Ombudsman when Bank refused to remove the marker. I applied in early 2020 and since June, July i am sending a polite email reminder to Ombudsman to ask the update on my application. Day before when i sent them an email reminder i received a reply from Investigator who is handling my case that he has spoken to Bank and they have accepted to remove the marker and they marker should already be removed by now. He said he will send me an official letter and his findings soon.
my suggestion will be to contact Ombudsman and ask for the update of your case.
best of luck

Thanks SR. It is really a great news in these dire times and specially when there is a Stamp Duty holiday. I am also waiting for a official letter from Ombudsman and will ask for the compensation at that point. Lets see what they have to say.
You’re absolutely right about markers as they do affect the credit file and lenders don’t lend any money.
The only reason i was thinking of going back to Halifax was as they knew what they have done in the past and they will be very careful (i hope) this time round and i will ask them before hand about all the documents they need. As i was searching online and as per my understanding they have good rates. But As Sara mentioned good brokers can handle my case professionally and will guide me properly when i will explain to them what happened last time.
It would be great if you keep us updated and i will do the same.
Sara is a star and she really helped us.

Hi Norman.
I received a letter from Halifax stating that they have rectified my credit file which I already knew from the ombudsman. I rang Halifax and told them I would want to make another complaint because I felt amending credit file without compensation for all what they put me through it’s not good enough.
I received a phone from them yesterday stating that their looking to compensate me and they will call me on Wednesday next week to discuss the matter further.
I will surely keep you posted on this forum.
Yes I agree with you 100% Sara has been a great help to us.
Thanks so much Sara
Noman says
This is really great news that Bank has contacted and said they have removed the markers.
I emailed my investigator from Ombudsman to say I havnt received your official replt and neither anything from bank, on which he stated that he is waiting some information from Halifax before issuing his final response to me, but he said he had a confirmation from bank that my markers have been removed and I should be abel to apply for mortgage without any issues. I will apply for SAR through National Hunter in first week of November as I don’t trust Halifax at all. I want to see with my own eyes.
It would be great if you could keep me posted on your compensation discussions with them as it would help me to discuss mine once I received official letter from ombudsman.
I would say try speaking to some no win no fee lawyers about compensation as well as Banks cant just go away by giving so much stress specially when there is already so much stress because of virus.
I will keep you posted as soon as i hear from them.
Many Thanks

Hi,
I need your assistance I made a bad mistake as I lost my job due to the pandemic. I applied for a business bonce back loan with Santander bank with current account. I had to provide like tax returns and proof of business and invoices to them. I got a call today say we are closing your account due to doing committing fraud we did 3rd party checks which was all lie to them from me.
They will report it to CIFAS Database as fraud on they system will market itz
I am so stressed out for a stupid mistake I made for money
What will happen I need advice plz .
Sara (Debt Camel) says
I’m sorry but are you saying the tax returns, proof of business etc were invented by you?
Or that they were all correct and Santander is lying?
Or that they were mostly correct but there was some mistake in them?
Syed N says
Hi,
I sent wrong documents to them they said I did fraud to apply and falsifying fine documents tax returns from HMRC and invoices. I said it was mistake I sent a wrong documents they said it’s a fraud and will close my account will pass it on to Cifas database I got 60 days to raise. They will put Cifas marker
I am worried noe what should I do now
Sara (Debt Camel) says
If this was a simple error and you would still have got the loan if you had sent the right documents, then I suggest you send Santander a complaint in writing. Explain what happened. Attach the correct documents. Point out you were eligible for the loan, you just made a mistake in the application.
If you weren’t really eligible for the loan and sent the wrong documents on purpose, then this sounds like fraud to me.
Syed N says
Okay they said to me you 60 days to write to us. We have closed your account however we will pass your information to Cifas I am so stressed out as I got a mortgage application on way now.
– How long does it take to appear on database and lenders can see the marker
Will it close my existing accounts with different banks
I am stressed out
Can I get advice

With a Cifas marker you may find it very hard to get a mortgage.

Hi,
I need help please give me some advise. I have been following this post for months and was hoping to find a solution to my problem. I left the UK for good back in March 2015 and one of the biggest mistake I did to pass on my detail to one of my friend at that time. I thought I am not coming back so what’s harm in it. But little do I know I came back in Jan 2020 and the immediate problem I faced was not any bank opening me a current account. I paniced and worried so I joined credit experts (Equifex and Experian) to check what was wrong and I was shocked to see so many bank accounts being opened and closed, credit card telephone contract you name it. I had 3 CCJs on my name on top of thousands of pounds debt. The debt collector start ringing me for the sins I didn’t commit.
I have no clue what to do I am stressed and depressed because of the fact that I can’t even open a single basic bank account with debt collectors on back. Please please advise me so I can get rid of this problem and get my credit profile back to normal. :(
Sara (Debt Camel) says
You can produce evidence you were out of the country, but as you gave your details to this “friend”, it may be difficult to prove you were not complicit in these credit applications. I suggest you talk to National Debtline on 0808 808 4000 and ask for their help on what your options are.

Hi There.
Is there a template available I can write to appeal to banks for closing my account for fraud i was accused of?
Sara (Debt Camel) says
No, This sort of thing is completely case-specific. A general letter will not help you at all.
Put COMPLAINT at the top.
Say what happened. Make sure this is in date order and preferably clear and short.
Then say why you think something was unfair.
end by saying what you want them to do to put this right.

Sara (Debt Camel) says
First do a check on the National Hunter and Cifas databases. The article above says how to do this.
Then you need someone to help you look at the details . I suggest National Debtline on 0808 808 4000.
zeeshan says
HI Sara
Just wanted to find out.
I was declined a mortgage last year around this time and was not given a clear reason for it.
i did not pursue it further as i was getting all mixed advices from the brokers.
In the end i did a national Hunters check and found out the have put Inconsistency against my file and the reason given was “Conflicting salary details”.
I did not get much help form my broker and he would not even have my application form for me to look at.
I did order Dsar from the bank in regards to the mortgage application and did not find anything conflicting on the form apart from the fact the broker had put down N for if my salary was coming into the bank account..
Anyway going forward i have been trying to speak the bank without much luck . Eventually i did make a complain and now they have come back saying that they can’t take the marker off but will down grade it to suspect instead of Inconsistency , and this should not hinder me from getting a mortgage.
Can you please explain what does this downgrade of Marker mean and will it help me to get or mortgage in he future?
looking forward to your response.
regards
Sara (Debt Camel) says
I don’t know what a mortgage lender would think, but the mortgage market is very dificult at the moment and some lenders may reject people for even the smallest sign of any problem.
If you think there was nothing suspect about your application at all, then this offer doesn’t sound satisfactory!
Of course a lender can remove the marker if they don’t think it is correct. I suggest you tell them if the marker isn’t removed, then you will be sending your complaint to the Financial Ombudsdman.
Noman says
Hi Zeeshan,
As Sara mentioned that you need to get this marker removed. even Ombudsman do say oh this marker doesnt effect your ability to get mortgage, but believe you me it does.
Complaint to Ombudsman and say bank have put the markers without any reason. And they will speak to bank and will get it removed if there wasnt any false information submitted by you.
It might take some time but i would say dont settle other than complete removal of the marker.
zeeshan says
BELOW RESPONSE FORM THE BANK.
“After reviewing your concerns, they have advised that they have now downgraded the marker
from inconsistency to suspect on your National Hunter record, but feel that we were right to add
the inconsistency marker at the point of your application.
By changing the marker to Suspect, this will not impact on your ability to obtain a mortgage
elsewhere.”
BELOW RESPONSE FROM NATIONAL HUNTERS…
“Enquiry: I have spoken to lender and they have said they will downgrade the marker from INCONSISTECNY TO SUSPECT. What does this mean how long will it be on the file for? And how long will it take to reflect on your database?
Hello,
For National Hunter, this would show as ‘Clear’ and as such would only be retained for 180 days from the application date. If this was over 6 months ago, this therefore means, it would no longer be present on National Hunter.
As soon as the member makes the change on their systems, it will be reflected in National Hunter no later than the following morning.
Any thoughts on the above please?
Noman says
Hi,
When did Bank changes the Marker to SUSPECT? If it was less than 180 days ago, then you can complaint to Ombudsman and they can get it removed. Else you can wait for 180 days and it will get clear. After 180 days fill a SAR for National Hunter and if no records come back means your name has been removed from there.
Thanks
zee says
Hi Norman
bank recently agreed to downgrade….the application is a year old.I I have made a SAR request to see if it has come off .
I had made request to CIFAS and they had come back saying the don’t hold any records for my name and date of brth.
Noman says
Hi Zee,
Yeah wait for SAR to come back from National Hunter. If it is still there you can complaint to Ombudsman or you can wait 6 months for it to disappear. I would tend to go towards Ombudsman that Bank remove this as we are not sure whether credit agencies still have visibility of anything despite it is been removed.
Thanks
zee says
Hi Norman
just to let you know . The national Hunters SAR returned with
“In reply to your letter regarding data held on our records, I can confirm that
having conducted a search, there is no data present relating to the details
you submitted.
This may be because you have not made any applications for finance
recently, or the organization/s you have applied to may not be members of
National Hunter. Another reason could be that you have been declined
before the member submitted any of your data to us”
I guess that should resolve it going further.
Claire says
Hello,
I recently fell victim to a HMRC text scam where I provided my personal details (national insurance number, DOB, address, mobile no., name (not full), mother’s maiden name, email. But thankfully no bank details). So immediately I applied for Cifas Protective registration. Will being on the Cifas database influence my job applications? I’m not applying for anything in the financial or law sector, but I’m still concerned. Also would you have any more advice for me? I’ve already signed up to fraud alerts, and will keep a good eye on my credit reports.
Many thanks in advance
Sara (Debt Camel) says
Applying for protective registration should not affect any job applications.
Pauline Paterson says
Yes I agree. I have refer mark from august 2015 with national hunters I since got fiancé for car nov 2018. With no issue. I’ve applied for mortgage it’s been approved in principal will nh mark cause issue. Tks
Sara (Debt Camel) says
is the refer mark still in the NH database?
Did you go through a broker or direct to Nationwide – if you went through a broker, what did they say about this?
Pauline Paterson says
I went straight to broker they said they really don’t know they have been told it’s been past by underwriting and been pulled just from random audit. Last time I checked with nh it 3 years ago. I’m making myself Unwell. Thank you
Sara (Debt Camel) says
I’m sorry but the broker is in a much better position to say something helpful than I am. I hope this comes right for you.

Thank you x

Hi there,
I would like to know does a CIFA show up on an enhanced DBS regards to working with children & vunerable adults ?
Rohit says
I have been declined for being flagged in National Hunter Database with clear status. Does clear status can lead to a decline?
Sara (Debt Camel) says
have you sent National Hunter a SAR as the article above suggests?
Rohit says
I did. I can see my name with a clear status.
Sara (Debt Camel) says
do you know who entered that status?
Noman says
also check when the clear was entered. was it the lender you applied to has given your details to National Hunter or another lender. This is really strange that because of Clear it is getting rejected.
Max says
May be there is some other agency that we don’t know of. I got a record for something that was done by my employer. Asked Santander for face to face meeting and said that I have all original evidence to support my case. They did not car much just said that I need to report my employer. I report my employer I lose job! I have a family to feed. They did not care.
Sara (Debt Camel) says
I suggest you talk to National Debtline on 0808 808 4000. That will be in confidence and you can explain all the details of what sounds like a difficult situation.
Rohit says
It was entered by LBG. Although I applied the mortgage with Halifax..
On my CIFAS I can see this entry. Not sure if this also affects?
American Express Services Europe Limited recorded a false identity marker with reference
XXXXXXX on XX JAN 2016, matching on details you have provided.
mustafa says
i got declined some motor finance, they said they used experian, but my experian score is 940, i phoned the finance company again and she told me there is a CIFA marker on my account placed by HSBC, i called HSBC and told them about reference number but they are having trouble to locate it, the note on the CIFA request form was that I have the same telephone number, they are still having problem finding it, what shall i do ?
Sara (Debt Camel) says
I suggest you send CIFAS a Subject Access Request, see Checking the Cifas database in the article above.
Then when you have the details from CIFAS, you send HSBC a complaint saying you want them to remove the CIFAS flag.
Ahmed says
Hi Sara,
Happy New Year. First I would like to thank you for this amazing resource you have about National Hunter and Cifas. I would like your opinion about my situation. My mortgage broker informed me that the underwriter would not proceed with my application as I have my name on National Hunter database. I requested Cifas, NH, and Sira disclosure. I was a victim of identify theft last year when someone used my info to apply for a HSBC account. I came to know about it when I received a letter from HSBC (03 Apr 2020) declining the account. As I did not apply for it, I contacted HSBC and informed that it was a fraudulent app. HSBC wrote me back (01 May 2020) confirming my details being used for personal banking and credit facilities. Their investigation was complete and they had cancelled the application. HSBC also informed that a market had been placed in Cifas for identity fraud. I have now examined my Cifas and NH report. NH has a ‘refer’ mark from HSBC for that application. Cifas also has the marker. My questions:
1. For mortgage, should I try to remove both Cifas and NH marker? or only NH marker?
2. What is the best way to get in-touch with HSBC (I am not a customer). I have their letter with the outcome which will help with this case. What should I specifically request HSBC to do? To arrange removal of the marker from NH (and or Cifas)?
I would really appreciate your help and guidance on this.
Sara (Debt Camel) says
For mortgage, should I try to remove both Cifas and NH marker? or only NH marker?
from what you have said, the NH marker is the important one. But ask your mortgage broker – they are best positioned to know the answer.
Does the letter have a telephone number? An email address? If not, phone 0345 6040626. You may have to be persistent.
Say you want to lodge a complaint about the NH marker as HSBC has agreed this was identity theft so you want it removed. tell them your complaint goes to the Finacial Ombudsman after 8 weeks if this has not been done.
Ahmed says
Many thanks Sara. Surprisingly, the HSBC letter (with the outcome of investigation) does not have any contact details to go back to. I will try the the number you have provided for non-customer.
Ahmed
Sara (Debt Camel) says
You could also complain that the letter you were sent did not have any contact details!
Ahmed says
During this failed mortgage attempt, I have already spent around £1000 on property survey and lawyer’s fee. This is totally wasted. Is it work asking for this from HSBC?
Sara (Debt Camel) says
From what you have said, you should try!
ahmed says
Hi all,
Just replying to give an update on my situation. The outcome has not been as I was hoping for. I complaint to HSBC (letter, online) on 11 Jan, 2021. The process is not very helpful as it does not give back any case number and when I call the complaint team, they were not able to find any useful information. Anyway, long story short, I have received a reply today:
“…My understanding of your complaint is that you did not apply for an HSBC credit card on 1 April 2020 and this has since affected an application for a mortgage….” (my complain was about putting a marker on NH and not informing me about that)
“….With regards to the information supplied to CIFAS and the National Hunter Databases, this should not affect your applications, as the information provided to both agencies was those that were provided in the fraudulent application such as the email address and the telephone number. As you have reported the application to be fraudulent, we are unable to remove the markers….”.
I would appreciate your advice. The letter mentions about Financial Ombudsman – is that my next route?
Ahmed
Sara (Debt Camel) says
Have you checked the NH and Cifas databases?
Ahmed says
Hi Sara,
I checked CIFAS, NH in January 2021 before requesting HSBC to remove the markers. After that, I haven’t checked since then.
My NH report has ‘refer’ marker with reason “ID – impersonation – current address”
The CIFAS report has “Victim of impersonation (Use, by another person, of this name and/or address)”.
The fraudulent application had my name, DOB, address but other details (Email, mobile, job, salary) were different.
Sara (Debt Camel) says
It may be that the underwriter/your mortgage broker has misunderstood the entries. You should not be declined for a mortgage because someone else has impersonated you. I suggest you talk to National Debtline on 0808 808 4000 about this to work out how you should proceed.
Ali says
Hi Sara,
Just receivied this letter today from NH can you please explain if this means I have no record again my name ?
“In reply to your letter regarding data held on our records, I can confirm that having conducted a search, there is no data present relating to the details you submitted.
This may be because you have not made any applications for finance recently, or the organization/s you have applied to may not be members of National Hunter. Another reason could be that you have been declined before the member submitted any of your data to us.”
Thanks
Sara (Debt Camel) says
That is what it sounds like.
Dave says
How do i remove my name from hunters list, Halifax put my name as inconsistency because they couldn’t verify my income. So im i gona get mortgage decline from other lenders
Sara (Debt Camel) says
Have you complained to Halifax?
Norman says
HI Dave,
Sorry to hear that. I have been to the same thing in past. I would suggest you complain to Halifax that please remove my name from National Hunter as there is nothing wrong in your income (which i am assuming there is nothing wrong)
They will tell you it wont effect you getting a mortgage from other lenders but believe you me it does. So tell them please remove it and ask them if they need any documentation to support your income you’re happy to provide that. Also mention if they do not remove the name you will go to Financial Ombudsman.
If they refuse please go to Financial Ombudsman and complaint to them. It takes 8-10 months to get it resolve through ombudsman but it will be removed eventually. I believe Halifax need to sort this mess of theirs and stop wasting everyone’s time.
Dave says
Thank norman and sarah
I have complain through resolver, its been nearly 2 weeks they haven’t responded to my complaints yet. I will update

Recently I have applied for a bank account at monesse and I was returned back with the following comments. I am very much worried as I have only one bank account, and I am not sure wether is going to affect me or not.

I am just clearing one thing tha none of my document were faulty or forged. All genuine and linking information regarding my documents available online on govt sites such as dvla etc…
Thanks
Dan
Weatherman says
Hi Dan
The difficulty here is that different companies have different documents they will accept as proof of ID. There’s no ‘master list’.
So possibly the bank just won’t ever accept some types of ID that you provided. Or they might have particular criteria of customers that they’re looking for (e.g. with a particularly high credit score, or whatever). That’d be a pain, but wouldn’t mean anything worrying is happening.
If you’re concerned, check your credit reports, and contact the three anti-fraud databases, as they might throw up some information that helps shed some light on why you were rejected.
Monique says
I have a cifas marker for a false insurance claim I made stupidly nearly six years ago and I have four defaults which are all satisfied and a satisfied ccj am I likely to get declined if I apply for a bad credit card?
Weatherman says
Hi Monique
There’s no simple answer to this I’m afraid – it depends on how the lender interprets the information on your credit report. Once the CIFAS marker has been there for six years it’ll stop showing, so your chances would be higher then.
Norman says
Hi Monique,
I would say check your CIFAS report and see when the entry was made. It should disappear after 6 years.
Thanks
Monique says
Thank you Weatherman & Norman I’ve checked it will come off next year so I’ll try my chances next year :)
Thanks for your advice
Monique
Ali says
Hi
Is there a limit to CIFAS report ? I got one in January and according to report my 6 years of a marker should complete by 6th Feb 2021. I want to check if it’s gone or not can I order another one ?
Thanks
Ali
Dave says
Hi sarah and norman
Finally got response from the bank.
” Thanks for getting in touch about the marker applied to your National Hunter records by Halifax.
I’ve looked into this for you and based on what we
know, we’re declining your complaint. I appreciate this may not be what you expected, so I’d
like to explain our decision and what you can do next.
What I understand of your concerns,
What I have found has happened
Firstly I would like to begin by explaining that We use a number of checks to
verify that the information provided in an application is correct, using both third party services
and also internal data held within the group.
A record was placed on your National Hunter file, as we felt that there were inconsistencies on
the mortgage application you made with Halifax in February 2020.
I’ve reviewed your concerns and I’m unable to uphold your complaint about the National Hunter
record being added at the time you applied for the mortgage with Halifax. However, after
providing additional information to our CCFD team they have agreed to remove the National
Hunter record.
You can go to the Financial Ombudsman Service
If you don’t agree with this decision,
Im lost, first paragraph on letter they say they have declined my complaints
Than right in the middle it say they agreed to remove national hunter record.
Is this right? did they agree to remove my name of hunter list
Sara (Debt Camel) says
Sounds like victory to me!
I suggest you reply that you do not think adding the marker was fair, but if they are removing it that seems an acceptable resolution to your complaint.
I suggest you check the NH database again in a month to see that has happened.
PS I assume there is no marker on the CIFAS database? If you aren’t sure, check that ASAP!
PPS make sure you never ever apply to Halifax/Lloyds for a mortgage, credit card, car finance etc. Or they may see this issue in their internal records and reject your application.
Norman says
Hi Dave,
I believe they have removed the name. But I would strongly suggest you apply for SAR for National Hunter. It is all online because of Covid and information comes back within a week or so. Also as Sarah mentioned apply SAR for CFIAS. make sure they both are clear and then do not apply for mortgage or credit through these lenders. Avoid them (the whole group) as they can still see this in their internal systems.
Dave says
Thanks norman and sara
this forum has help me alot, because of both of you and your valuable advice i managed to hopefully remove my name from national hunter. I will check in few weeks time to see if they truly removed it. I will post
Tkay says
Cifas markers was placed on my name by barclays last, after 7 months of investigation, marker was removed. During that seven months all my bank accounts were closed. Tried new applications all rejected. Barclays has taken the marker off my name February ending. Last week I tried one of the bank that rejected me @ first to my surprise still got rejected.
Norman says
Hi Tkay,
Sorry to hear that. Did you got the SAR from CIFAS and from National Hunter. Please make sure they are removed.
Tkay says
Hi Norman,
Thanks for your message, have requested for SAR from CIFAS, the marker has been removed. Waiting to hearing from National Hunter.
Weatherman says
Hi Tkay
I agree with Norman – check CIFAS and National Hunter again as well as SIRA to make sure there’s nothing else you need to resolve. There’s information about how to do that in the post above.
It could take a bit of time for the new information (‘no marker’) to feed through to banks, so if you’re able to, wait a couple of weeks and try again.
Sara (Debt Camel) says
Also you may want to consider applying to a bank you have not previously been rejected by! Banks can see their own internal records as well as checking external databases.
Tkay says
Hi Sarah,
Have tried nearly all the high streets bank got rejected.
Luckily I was given cash card plus by TSB.
Sara (Debt Camel) says
Try Monzo or Starling. Or Nationwide if you didn’t apply to them before?
Of course you may want to go back to your preferred bank and say it is unfair to reject you as the fraud marker was wrong and has now been removed.
Norman says
I have also heard (please check yourself) the online banks like sterling etc are bit relaxed in their approach. So you can try once you can see that there are no markers.
Tkay says
Hi Sarah,
I tried Monzo, Starling and Nationwide got rejected by them. Nearly all the online and High Street are on CIFAS
Sara (Debt Camel) says
I am sorry but it was VERY foolish to apply to so many banks when you were being rejected.
Of course all banks check the fraud databases.
In this case you have to wait and be sure National Hunter and Cifas are clear, pick a bank, apply to it and then lodge a complaint if you are rejected.
Tkay says
Hi Norman,
Thanks for the information. I will give it a month before applying for anything
Tkay says
Hi Sarah,
Barclays bank report me to CIFAS.
I have requested for my DSARS from CIFAS, and N Hunters no markers hold on my name according to CIFAS.
N Hunters sent my SAR today and everything was shown CLEAR according to the SAR. I called to explain the situation and was told barclays bank is not one of their clients.
The lady asked me to contact CIFAS which I told her have already done that.
CIFAS confirm markers has been removed.
