This page covered the complaints and refunds process before Wonga went under on 30 August.
Events in August 2018
August 4 – Wonga forced to ask investors for £10million in funding as the cost of affordability complaints increases.
26 August – news reports that Wonga was in trouble.
- Sky News reported that:
Directors of the payday lender Wonga could appoint Grant Thornton as the company’s administrator within days, Sky News learns.
- Piece on Channel 4 News – including a Debt Camel reader talking about his situation.
August 30 – Wonga gives up and goes into administration
With Wonga in administration, complaints and refunds are now being handled differently, see Wonga – latest news of refunds for details.
That page will be kept updated, this one is now closed.
Much of the rest of this page is no longer relevant so the text colour has been changed to this.
Wonga affordability complaints before administration
If you had loans from Wonga that you struggled to repay, perhaps having to borrow again because you couldn’t afford the Wonga payment and get through the next month, then your loan may have been “unaffordable”.
You can ask for a refund of the interest you paid.
Slow complaints handling
Wonga sends a statement of your account without trying to charge you for it, but it can take a while. If you are trying to piece together your loan history from your credit reports or bank statements, old entries saying “Quickbridge” are Wonga loans.
The Financial Ombudsman’s rules say a firm is allowed 8 weeks to reply to a complaint. This clock starts running when you put your complaint in.
In summer 2018 Wonga is struggling to handle all the complaints. Here is a typical message people are being sent:
We’re currently investigating high volumes of complaints. If we can’t respond within our 8-week timeframe, we’ll contact you to explain the delay and let you know when you can expect a response.
If Wonga hasn’t answered after 8 weeks, take your complaint to the Financial Ombudsman. Wonga will still be looking at your complaint and you could get an answer in the next few weeks.
Have you already had a refund from Wonga?
Wonga had a major refund program a few years ago. If you had a balance owing to them, this may have been written off at that point. They also made some small refunds in 2016 – out of the blue people had a letter saying they will be receiving £6.20 or £51 or some other random number.
You may still have a good case for your other loans being unaffordable – we have seen many people win affordability complaints after already getting a refund or a write-off. The more loans or rollovers you had before the one that was written off, the more you are likely to get a refund now.
Think of the write-off as being the first part of your refund.
Sometimes Wonga makes reasonable offers… but often it doesn’t!
Sometimes Wonga makes good offers, some of them very large:
- John was worried when he was told his case had been referred to their legal team, then a couple of weeks later he got a refund of over £10,000;
- in September 2017, Danny Boy was very happy to accept an offer of £11,934.
However, Wonga rejects some excellent cases, which are then upheld by the Ombudsman. Examples include: Rob got £3,000; Lou got £500; Mart got £6,455. So if your complaint is rejected, don’t assume it is a bad case and give up!
Making a random small offer
And sometimes Wonga offers to just refund on a few loans picked at random from the loans you had. When challenged they have no explanation for why they are offering to refund those particular loans, they just say that’s their offer. With these cases you can do a lot better by waiting for a decision from the Ombudsman:
- Wonga offered Tony £818 for just two loans – the Ombudsman said that all loans should be refunded – £4,800
- Ross had 60 loans from wonga over 5 years. Wonga only offered to refund one loan – £26. He went to the Ombudsman and got a refund on 54 loans – £4,650.
Sometimes refuses to pay out on loans after 2014
Wonga often refuses to pay out on loans after they changed their lending policy in 2014. It’s true that they made a lot more bad loans before that, but they are not getting all the decisions right now!
Many people are getting good refunds via the Ombudsman for these recent loans.
Don’t rush to accept an offer if it misses off a lot of loans
We have also seen people accept an offer from Wonga but then regret it when they realise it is only for three loans. If you are made an offer, sit back and think for a few days if it is good enough.
Could you lose a Wonga offer by going to the Ombudsman?
If you are offered some money but it’s a lot less than the interest you paid, you may be worried you could end up with nothing if you reject it and go to the Ombudsman.
So far we haven’t seen any case, from Wonga or any other lender, where someone who was offered a refund ended up with less by going to the Ombudsman.
Wonga are arguing about loans over 6 years
The Ombudsman’s rules say that complaints have to be made within 6 years, but there is an extra rule that says a complaint can be made later if you have only become aware of the problem within the last 3 years.
Wonga is refusing to pay out on loans over 6 years old. Other lenders have now accepted the ombudsman’s decision that they can look at older loans as people have only recently heard about these affordability complaints.
At the moment Wonga and the ombudsman are arguing over a few test cases and everyone else with loans over 6 years is just waiting until these test cases are resolved. I hope this will be soon!
If most of your loans are within 6 years and only a few are older, you may want to agree to drop the older loans to speed up your case.

Wonga have finally agreed the settlement and sent me an email stating the payout will take 14 working days.
Does anyone have any experience of Wonga payouts and time it usually takes. I’m really hoping it won’t take the full nearly 3 weeks.
Jordan says
Once you send the singed acceptance form to them they usually acknowledge the receipt of the form 3-4 working days later and pay out 3-4 working days after that.
Steve says
Thanks for this, they acknowledged the acceptance form last Friday – so hopefully might get something this week.
Vicky says
Hi did you receive your payment that week I’m wairing for mine and my partners i got the acknowledgement of acceptance one on the 3rd and one on the 4th so hoping will get sorted sometime this week x
Kelly says
Hi
Has anyone had any news about the loans older than 6 years?
My case has been with the ombudsman since July/August and Wonga are saying the ombudsman cannot look into these loans as they are older.
It’s taking so long and I don’t understand why.
Is this something that is going on in court and everyone is waiting for a decision or is it simply between Wonga and the team dealing with the older cases? I know they have loads of claims but I’m just unsure as to why it’s all on hold.
Sara (Debt Camel) says
What is happening is that all cases except a couple have been placed on hold whilst Wonga and the FOS (and also QuickQuid and the FOS) argue over these test cases. There is no point in the arguing the same points over lots of very similar cases. What is being argued is only whether older loans can be looked at, not whether the individual cases should be refunded. All other over 6 year cases are on hold until the test cases have been sorted.
Kelly says
Thanks for explaining that to me.
I hope it’s sorted soon. A part of me wants to ask the ombudsman to look at the later loans and forget about the older ones but I’ll wait it out
Sara (Debt Camel) says
how many older loans were there and how many under 6 years? were the more recent loans larger?
Kelly says
There are around 23 older ones and about the same for the newer ones, they offered a refund on around 11 of the newer loans.
I’ve worked it out to be around £2500 for the ones from 2010 and £2600 for the ones from 2011-2014
Sara (Debt Camel) says
Sounds worth holding out for then!

Does anyone know what I should do, I checked my credit file to send to the fos and all my brothers details are on my file it only shows my name on electoral roll and everything else in his name, what do i do and would it be worth trying to get compensation for my file being ruined for years with false info
Dan says
Any one know how long Wonga are taking to payout ? I had offer on the 9th of May which I completed and sent back the same day…
I know they say 14 working days (which is strange in it self ) but was just wondering.
Mr and Mrs C says
Do you mind me asking how long they took to respond and make you the offer? And was it a decent offer on what you paid in interest?
thanks
Dan says
They offered £3300 plus interest totalling £4400.. the offer came about 3 days short of the 8 weeks they have for resolution.
I found the offer to be satisfactory to me.. obviously there were loans they decided were not worthy of upholding… I would say they interest refunded is approx 70% on the total interest paid out to wonga over 2 years
Mr and Mrs C says
I think that’s quite a good offer then…. Well done to you. I’ve had 22 loans over a two year period paying back over 2k in interest – I’ve got till 6th June for my 8 weeks to be up so a bit longer wait.
Kara says
Update on my Wonga complaint.
They didn’t uphold any of my complaint (7 loans, the first 3 older than 6 years) when I contacted them in December and I sent it on to the FOS in March. I contacted the FOS in early May and they confirmed that the older loans (worth about £300 in interest & 8%) were stopping the complaint from being looked at whilst they continue their talks about older loans. I agreed that they could proceed without looking at refunding the first 3 loans. Within 2 weeks an adjudicator decided that loans 4-7 should be refunded. Within 4 days Wonga also agreed and have offered £2300 (after tax deduction), which is very close to my estimate of what I was owed.
Ellen says
Hi Everyone,
I got an answer from the FOS yesterday saying that they should repay back 8 out of the 9 loans taken (Interest and fees).
I accepted the decision and wanted to know what the next steps are? Can Wonga disagree and refuse to pay? Will i have to wait another 6 months for the funds to be paid? I’m not quite sure where i go from here. Has anyone else had this experience?
Thanks guys.
Chris Bartlett says
Hi Ellen,
No, Wonga can’t disagree…..what the FOS says- goes. Unless Wonga want to take your specific case to court (which is unlikely for what sounds like a case like yours) unless they think they see proper storm clouds brewing and they want find some way out of the wider picture. But if you have the paperwork for your own situation, they’ll come though. A lender like them will wear the “regulated by the FCA” badge with pride as it makes them credible….and then they realistically have to honour any back-end or fall out for the same reason. Realistically they’ve still been turning a tidy profit over several years so all this business will cost them a few quid, but they’ll still be up overall. They might not be too swift in paying you back ( who would, really?) but they will! Hope this helps!
Sara (Debt Camel) says
If Ellen’a decision was from an adjudicator at the FOS then Wonga can say they disagree and ask for this to go to the second “Ombudsman” level for a final decision. Wonga adjudicator rulings, they don’t always disagree. Sometimes they don’t respond to the adjudicator within the given time so a case goes into the queue for the Ombudsman but then they accept the adjudicator decision a couple of weeks later.
If her decision was from an Ombudsman then It is legally binding on Wonga. A consumer can reject an Ombudsman decision and sue the firm in court but firms are not allowed to do this.

Mr and Mrs C says
That’s great news” did you get the offer from Wonga without having to go through FOS?
Helen says
Yes 8 weeks and 2 days they offered me full refund so accepted
Dan says
Any sign of your refund Helen ?
I sent my acceptance back on the 9th and still no sign of the funds…
Helen says
Not yet I had email saying it was being processed it should have been in today I’ll post soon as it’s sorted

Any news on 6+ year wonga claims? They have been stalling for s long time ang my claim is on hold with FOS fora year now.
Had 4 other cases from other companies settled. No problems
Sara (Debt Camel) says
Sorry no news yet.
natalie bradley says
Hi
First time poster here! ????
So after finding this site I began my reclaim mission with various companies.
One of these being wonga. I got into a vicious circle with these after borrowing and incurring huge interest so between 2012-2016 I am ashamed to say took out a total of 35 loans.
My first letter to them asking for my statement was 1st April 2018 and I received it within 12 days. I then sent my first letter to them via email on 14th April and received their computer generated “sorry it’s taking longer” letter on 29th April.
I then received an email stating they will uphold my complaint and they are offering to refund me interest and charges on one loan from June 2014?
I have just sent an email back stating
-I am declining their offer as I don’t believe it has been looked at correctly.
-reiterated some points of first letter to them regarding their responsibility as a lender.
– asked how they decide to only refund one?
– Gave them 14 days to re look at my case as a gesture of goodwill prior to escalating to the FOS.
Does anyone know what I should expect from here?
Many thanks.
Ps, thank you for an amazing site, great community and very informative advice xx
Sara (Debt Camel) says
My expectation is they will not revise their offer or explain why they picked that loan.
Mr and Mrs C says
Disaster – have had 22 loans from Wonga from 2012-2016 (that I can trace) they have replied today to offer £212 on one loan from 2013.
Will have to send the FOS now in the hope that they can help.
Sara (Debt Camel) says
Not a good offer! Have they sent you a complete list of your loans?
Mr and Mrs C says
No – but I have made my own list looking at the bank statements back to 2012.
I can see that 4 of them were rolled over and paid off in 3 months of payments i.e, £400 loan took 3 x payments of £197.00 to clear, and still they continued to lend…. have logged with FOS today.
Anon says
Any sign of ur refund Helen and Dan. My acceptance was sent in on 8th may and still waiting. When I ring wonga, they simply say they have a back log.
Helen says
I rang yesterday and was told the same thing and I should receive it by 12th 14 working days from it being processed. Sent my acceptance on 13th may
Helen says
Good news they have paid out it’s gone in tonight day 13 thank you Sarah for your excellent information
Anon says
Just got mine in bank today. I recommend keep ringing for updates. Have to say thanks to this site. If I hadn’t have seen the comments I would never have tried
natalie bradley says
Hi ????
Just a quick update,
I received a response last week saying they have closed my complaint after not hearing from me….. again, despite the fact I’m using the same email every time and they receive other things? So today I called and said my case has not been given the due care and attention it deserves. They said I will have to open a new complaint and they will respond in 5 days!
I said this was not acceptable and I want it escalating to a manger before I escalate to the FOS which will cost them more money in the long run.
Waiting for a phone call from a manager……
natalie bradley says
Hi
No response from a manager, had to call back again, was put on hold for ten minutes whilst the manager read my case.
He came back saying “I understand you are not happy as we didn’t uphold your case”.. frustration to say the least!! This was not the case as you are all aware. Got frustrated with him and said he obviously isn’t looking at the case properly.
He couldn’t care less and said it was fine I go to the ombudsman.
So off to the FOS I go. Hopefully going to fill an online form in later.
Does anyone know what to expect from here?
Can I get a credit report for free to include within the complaint?
Anymore advice anyone has would be greatful.
Looks like I’m in for a long process…… xxx
Sara (Debt Camel) says
Sorry but this was what I expected to happen. You can get a free credit report from Noddle.
Jonny McComb says
Hi Sara,
I have only recently heard about getting the Wonga refund loan which is great. I have just sent of the first email template. I know i paid back more than £3000 back in 2014 im just not entirely sure i would be eligible. They stopped letting me borrow back in November 2014 and stated i was no longer eligible which left me with almost no money and as a result i had to start borrowing from other lenders to make up fot it which then put me into serious financial hardship. Do you think i would have grounds based on this? Thanks
Jonny
Sara (Debt Camel) says
If you borrowed a lot in 2014, definitely make a complaint against Wonga! The template letters are over here https://debtcamel.co.uk/payday-loan-refunds/ and this is easy to do. As you borrowed a lot from them and the loans are less than 6 years old, this should be straightforward – if Wonga reject your complaint or offer a poor refund, come back here and ask what people think.
Your complaint is tat they gave you loans that you couldn’t afford. The fact that they refused to lend you any more you could suggest is evidence that they realised they hadn’t done the right thing in assessing your previous loans… but really your complaint is simply that they gave you loans that you couldnt afford to repay without borrowing more.
Sara (Debt Camel) says
And also put in complaints to the other lenders you later used. Do you still owe money to any of them?
Jonny says
Hi Sara,
I actually ended up having to go into a debt management scheme to pay off the other loans because it got so out of control. I understand that i was stupid enough to keep borrowing but all of the loans where paid back through the debt management scheme. The debt management scheme was called Money Plus. Thanks
Jonny
Tony says
Hi guys has anyone had a similar experience.
I sent my acceptance on May 30th. Emailed yesterday to ask for an update of progress about my complaint. Received an email today saying they hadn’t received a response and my complaint was closed.
Just rang and apparently I should have sent proof of my bank account even though the details hadn’t changed. The response letter says you only need to do this if your details have changed. I’m absolutely fuming. The representative I spoke to was very rude and interrupted me on several occasions. The complaint team only work until 4!
Will be ringing first thing to sort this out as their 15 day period has ended.
Sara (Debt Camel) says
This was a refund agreed with Wonga direct, not through the Ombudsman? How many loans were they refunding – was it a good refund?
Tony says
Yes the refund was really good and direct through Wonga – they did 13/15 loans. Can’t believe how shoddy the processing was though! Is this normal for them ?
Jess says
Hi Tony,
Have you had your refund processed yet?
Tony says
Still no payment or contact to say it has been processed. I will give them until Wednesday then ring back
Micheal says
Hi this my case originally started in sept 2017.
I had 90 loans and total 162 with top ups.
The adjudicator upheld from loan 12-90.
I didnt even hear from them until may 4th 2018.
Now its june 14th and they said its in its final stage.
What are my chances because it is a very large sum of money.
Anyone else case gone on that long?
Sara (Debt Camel) says
That does sound like a big claim! It has now been picked up by an Ombudsman – in most cases they agree with the adjudictor, but sometimes the Ombudsman changes the number of loans, so you could say get a refund from loan 15-90 or loan 8-90.
It is a long while for the cases that have to go past the adjuidactor, but the 8% interest you will have added on will be getting bigger every month! Let us know when you do get a result.
V666 says
My case is similar to yours. I opened a case with Wonga in Sept 2018 and it’s still ongoing.
Faye Parlour says
I heard from the adjudicator last week that’s she agrees that every single loan should have the interest and fees refunded. She has contacted wonga and we are now waiting to hear back to see whether wonga agree or disagree.
As a matter of interest, from past success stories, what is the likelihood of them agreeing or disagreeing with the adjudicator?
JC says
Hi Sarah,
Reply from Wonga in who have offered me redress on some of the loans within past 6 years and said those from 2011/13 cannot be consider d. Offer is circa £750 I calculate I’ve paid £3k of interest so off to the ombudsman for me
JC says
Hi Sarah,
I’ve now had replies in from all lenders bar myjar. All of have partially upheld my complaints but only offers fractions backnof the interest paid so I’ve presented all cases to the Ombudsman.
Sunny upheld my complaint and offered redress on the first loans I have with them but offered nothing On the following 11 or so… Strange !??
Updates to follow.
Sonya says
Hi Everyone,
I contacted WONGA asking for a statement of account and they provided one. They also progressed the complaint even though technically I did not complain I just asked them for a statement of account. Today I received a cut and pasted together email stating they wished to give me £200 based on one loan. There are consistent undertones throughout the email that the Ombudsman would not consider me due to the time passed since I had the loans. I spent most of 2012 and 2013 in a cycle of lending with WONGA where i would pay back a loan and have to immediately get another to pay my rent etc. I ma hoping that the Ombudsman will consider me. However I am worried about any info I need to provide them as I only have the statement off WONGA I have no bank statements etc its so long ago. Does anyone have any advice? Is it worth me replying back to WONGA and seeing if they will up their offer or should I go straight to the Ombudsman?
Any advice would be gratefully received as when I look at the statement i am appalled at how they continued to lend to me when I was obviously in a bad place.
Thanks
clare callaghan says
hi i have followed this site to claim my wonga loans back 30 loans i had today is the 8th week and they have responded with a offer on 3 loans for the sum of 625 pounds shall i accepted
Sara (Debt Camel) says
That sounds like one of Wonga’s random and very poor offers! Did they give any reason for picking out those three?
clare callaghan says
However, having reviewed your complaint, we accept that the loans in the table below may not have been affordable given your circumstances.
Outcome
Based on the above, there may have been more that we could have done to assist you and so we have decided to uphold your complaint. Additionally, we will also request for the redressed loans to be removed from your credit record. This may take up to 30 working days to be updated fully on your credit file.
We would like to offer £625.57 which is an amount equal to the interest and fees on the following loans:
Date Interest and fees
2013-09-13 £133.16
2013-09-26 £282.60
2013-10-30 £209.81
—————————————-
i have got all my loans up on my banking i actually had 32 in total the fees for all of them altogether came to 1283.86 the 3 loans they are offering me were the 3 big loans i took the rest were between 50 pounds to 300 pound
11 loans before these dates i have used my credit file noodle to get the information i can check my bank my first loan was 12/11/12 then every month until they refused me in December 2014 which was a shock as i was so use to borrowing from them to manage at the time i first borrowed from them my credit score was poor
Sara (Debt Camel) says
ok so it’s not so random and it’s not a dreadful offer… But borrowing every month for 2 years makes this sound like a pretty good case. You could get back £1000+ by going to the Ombudsman.
clare callaghan says
thankyou i will have a think will i lose this offer if i go to the ombudsman ?
Sara (Debt Camel) says
We have never come across a case where a lender offered to refund certain loans and then withdrew the offer – I certainly would not expect Wonga to.
James Reyland says
Hi,
I used Wonga first in july 2012, i borrowed every single month until september 2014 when they suddenly rejected my application, which put me in difficulty, they werent the only payday loan company i was using. I paid back approx £10,500 in interest and fees through that time over 34 loans, i was stuck in the classic cycle of pay back/re-borrow.
Ive submitted a complaint today, do you think i have a strong case?
Sara (Debt Camel) says
Sounds like a lot of borrowing to me, and borrowing every month always makes a case better.
Mark says
I sent off my complaint 2 months ago to the fos , I sent all the emails and bank statements but I could not send my credit file as it was mixed up with my twin brother and showed no info about me, does anyone know the timescales or when do they normally get back to you , thanks
Sara (Debt Camel) says
What have you done to resolve your credit record problem? What happens if your twin checks your his credit record? Was this Noddle? Have you put in a complaint to Call Credit? Have you checked your Experian and equifax reports?
Mark says
I got an Equifax account and I told them and they wiped all my brothers info off it , but there is nothing about me it just shows I’m on the electoral roll, middle still shows my brothers info but I have disputed it, my twin brother has checked his file now and it doesn’t show anything about me, who is call credit and is that who I should be contacting? I thought they would have added some of my info on my file after wiping all my brothers off mine , but my score has stayed the same aswel
Sara (Debt Camel) says
ok, not many payday lenders report to Equifax so that is often useless. Get your Noddle report https://www.noddle.co.uk/ – that is a free report on your Call Credit account which is the credit reference agency used by most payday lenders.
Mark says
Ok thanks Sara , do you think it would matter that I didn’t send my credit file to the fos because there’s nothing on it ,and I’ve been waitin 2months should I hear back soon? Just worried incase it goes or 6 months since I complained to wonga , thanks a lot
Sara (Debt Camel) says
Waiting 2 months isn’t unusual but your lack of a credit record could cause big problems for your case if you want to say that the lender should have realised you had other problems debts.
Mark says
Ok thanks very much sara, do you think it would be worth ringing the fos to see if there’s any update or so I just have to wait until they get back to me
Sara (Debt Camel) says
I think you should be spending this time sorting out your credit record and hope your case isn’t picked up until you have done this! it is not in your interests to push this at the moment.
Mark says
I have disputed all the wrong info on my noddle account, will they add my info after they have deleted all my twin brothers , thank you Sara
Lee says
I have been borrowing from Wonga for over six years must total over 10k in interest, letter sent and automated email reply saying they are looking into my complaint. Will keep you up to date ????????
Joe says
Hi All,
I received my final response from Wonga on the 7th June saying that my final loan had been dealt with under their “marketability review” of 2014 when they wrote off the last few hundred pounds and that no other loans would be looked at as they were over 6 years old.
Finally got my statement of account today which shows I still paid £1330.43 interest on my final loan and tgat the last payment on my previous loan was made on the 30th April 2012. (My complaint was made 17th April 2018, so 13 days before the 6 years were up).
I paid £1324.60 interest on that loan
All others are over 6years.
Do I have a good case with the two stated above?
Thanks
Sara (Debt Camel) says
So they aren’t offering anything. In that case you have nothing to lose by sending the whole case to the Ombudsman, including the over 6 year loans. Just settle back and wait, it could take a long while but you could get a very nice refund at the end of it.
Joe says
Thanks Sarah

Hi
I received an offer for £2588 from Wonga 8 weeks after I complained. I replied giving bank details as requested and payment was due around 5th July. I the following email from them on Thursday:
We responded to your complaint with an email which outlined our findings and included our final response. In this email we asked you to confirm if you accept our resolution of your complaint.
We’re not aware of a reply from you and so we have now closed your complaint. If you still wish to discuss your complaint, we’ll be happy to help.
Kind regards,

I did my claim using resolver so have copies of the emails that I sent confirming acceptance of offer etc. I have forwarded them to Wonga but no response as yet. What should I do next?
Tony says
The did the same thing to me. Apparently you have to send your bank details, even if they have them on record. So a bank statement etc. I’d call and complain about this anyway. I did and it took them another week until the money got paid.
They tried to argue with me the first time – the woman wasn’t very nice. When I rang back the 2nd person was really helpful.
Fran says
Thanks for coming back to me Tony. I sent a bank statement along with the email as proof. Obviously they are trying to chance their arm! I’ll ring tomorrow.
Fran says
All sorted! Email confirming payment will be made within 14 days.

Have you received your refund yet i sent my acceptance on 22nd June and had response to say being processed on 3rd July but still waiting

Hi Vicky
I got confirmation that it was being processed on 2nd July and the payment went in on 12th July. I’d maybe give them a ring.
Let’s us know how you get on. X

I have recently found out I could claim back from wonga, myself and my husband borrowed from wonga back in 2012, I’m unsure how many loans we have had but we had Loans extended the last one I could find was 22/10/12, I also have a copy of a letter they sent me 10/10/14 confirming they lent me irresponsibly, and a letter from 14/11/14 confirming they wiped my debt I have asked for details of my account, am I still eligible for a refund?

No it doesn’t, if you win the case Wonga will be told to sort out the debt collector, But you MUST tell the debt collector that you have started a complaint with Wonga – this prevents the debt collector starting court action – better safe than sorry!
Lee says
So Wonga replied with a list of loans I had with them going back to 2013, turns out I’ve had 39 in total all most of which I were rolling over and over, sent second letter off on Friday asking for it back!! Finger crossed I get an offer!! What do you think the chances are peeps???
ben says
a little info about my case,
I took out 111 loans between 2012-2018, I had to take out another loan after repaying the first every month in order to live. I have sent an email to Wonga explaining this so I will keep you updated. Would you consider this a strong case Sara? And does claiming have an affect on your credit rating?
Regards,
Ben
Sara (Debt Camel) says
That sounds like a very strong case!
If you don’t get a refund offered on most of your loans, send it to the Ombudsman.
Wonga may offer you a refund on some of the earlier loans but say after 2014/5 they changed their lending policy so they won’t offer refunds after that – if they do say this, pay no attention to it, lots of people have won cases at the Ombudsman for Wonga loans after this point,
Sara (Debt Camel) says
Putting in a complaint itself will not affect your credit rating.
But if you currently have a balance you can’t afford to repay unless you borrow again, then you need to ask Wonga for a payment arrangement for this last loan. because you won’t be able to repay it and get another loan.
This payment arrangement can affect your credit rating, but if Wonga has to offer a refund then any negative marks on the loans being refunded are then removed from your credit record. And the last loan is most likely to be one of the loans being refunded. So in practice this doesn’t prove a problem for people.
Alan says
Thanks to all on this website! No positive news yet as I am in early stages of my requests.
I had Wonga, PDUK, £toPocket & QQ loans, all of which I have sent in initial SARs for account details.
Wonga has been first to respond with my statements, which show I had 14 rolling loans with them from end 2011 to end 2012.
The letter that came with statement was a generic one, but made no mention of my claim, just that they review each application individually etc…
So a few questions:
Do I now just wait for them to respond further?
When does the 6 year rule kick in, I sent in my Stage 1 on June 20th – the longer it takes the more fall out of that time frame…?
Do I need to go to Stage 2 now I have the details of my loans?
Thanks again all…

Hi
I raised a irresponsible lending complaint against Wonga for 6 continuous loans. The FSC adjudicator agreed that loans 4 to 6 where loaned irresponsibly. Wonga don’t agree with the adjudicator but have agreed to refund me £1242.42, however, I as still owe for loan 6 bringing the overall refund down to £213. However, Loan 6 has been sold on to a Debt Company which I have been paying. Wonga have said they will recall the loan and remove from my credit report. My question is can I request that I receive the full refund and then negotiate with the debt company to repay which is likely to be lower than if Wonga deal with. Hope that makes sense
Sara (Debt Camel) says
Is the £1242, the refund for loans 4-6 or have Wonga offered a smaller amount? How much did you borrow for loan 6 and have you made any payments to it?
Jayne Smith says
Sara
The refund is the made up of the interest for loans 4 and 5 plus 8% interest. Eg:
Interest and fee £1111.28
8% interest £131.14
Unpaid amount (loan 6) -£1029.00
TOTAL SETTLEMENT £213.42
I have been paying Lowell as loan 6 was sold to them by Wonga

Hi
I wonder if anyone can help , I received an offer that 4200 and they really owed me 16000 . I did accept but God it taken for ever to pay out . I waited the time they told me and an extra two weeks I ‘ve also be told twice it will be in by the end of the working day , then after still not receiving it I called again and I got conformation via email it will take 24_48 hrs still no sign after my last call today they again said by the end of the day still no sign of the money . Does anyone know or can help what to do next ,. It’s so misleading and dishearting o
Sara (Debt Camel) says
Are many of your loans more than 6 years old? £16000 is a life changing amount of money! Do you have other debts?
One thing you could try is to say unless the money is in your account by the end of Monday you are withdrawing your acceptance of their offer and taking your case to the Financial Ombudsman.
Of course this could be a bluff if you don’t want to do this, but they probably can’t tell!
I haven’t seen anyone do this, but you have clearly been messed around.

Any news Sara on 6+ years cases?
Robynne says
Hi, I put in a complaint via a third party to Wonga relating to 39 different loans over a 2 year period, the loan amounts reached almost 11k with almost 3k of that being fees and interest. This resulted in me having to take out other high interest loans such as everyday loans and Amigo to get out of debt and during this time defaulting on credit cards and as a result landing with a CCJ. Wonga came back on the day before 8 weeks and offered a measly £244 for 1 loan. I am gobsmacked at how low an offer they have given. As of today the third party I am working with has referred to the FO.
My question is how long will this take and has anyone else challenged Wonga direct on their decision and had any luck, I honestly thought it was a mistake!
Sara (Debt Camel) says
How long it will take will partly depend on how competent your claims firms is :( You need to stay on top of what they are doing, ask them to send you copies of any correspondence from the FO and if WEonga come back with an offer the claims firm says you should accept, come back here if you aren’t sure… some claims firms are happy to settle low if it means little work for them.
Have you supplied copies of your bank statements and credit record to go with the FO complaint?
Wonga often seem to make very poor, random offers. And they don’t revise them if you go back and ask them to look at it again.
Lee says

Hi, I put in a complaint to Wonga which was refused in full in November 2017, so I then referred the matter to the Financial Ombudsman without delay.
I’m still awaiting a final outcome from the Ombudsman. Everytime I contact them, they state it may take some time and are still reviewing the large number of loans I had taken out. Obviously its been 8 months.
Has any one else experienced these delays from the Ombudsman? I’m taking it as good news with the length of time its taking, well fingers crossed!!
Many thanks
Sara (Debt Camel) says
Has it been through an adjudicator? The Ombudsman seems to be trying to find a way to speed up the handling of cases with very large numbers of loans at the moment. On the bright side, the amount of extra 8% interest will going up nicely on a big claim!
Baz says
Hi Sara, many thanks for the quick response! Yes, it’s still with the adjudicator, which has been since the end of March 2018. I’ve asked for updates, but they just said due to the amount of cases and number of loans with my case, its taking more time than expected. I’m hoping I get a good return :-)
mary kelly says
Hi Sara
Just received this response from Wonga after the first and second letter
Unfortunately our investigation into your complaint is taking longer than expected and we can’t give you a resolution yet.
We appreciate your patience and apologise for any inconvenience this delay may cause.
We do our best to resolve complaints in the order that we receive them. We’re currently investigating high volumes of complaints. If we can’t respond within our 8-week timeframe, we’ll contact you to explain the delay and let you know when you can expect a response.

Hi Sara I was speaking to you a few weeks ago about my credit file being mixed up with my twin brothers , should I send my credit file to the ombudsman now as it’s sorted out but for some reason it only shows 4 wonga loans for low amounts and not all the other big ones I had , thanks Sara
Sara (Debt Camel) says
Is it just loans from wonga that are missing? If it is, then this won’t be a problem – send the report to the Ombudsman and say that some of your Wonga loans aren’t on there, you don’t know why. Wonga didn’t need to check your credit record to see what you had already borrowed from them.
If there is a lot of borrowing from other lenders missing, this can make your complaint harder as Wonga (and any other payday lender if you are complaining about others) couldn’t see what your finances were like from your credit record. But if you borrowed a lot and in increasing amounts from Wonga, they should still have known you were in trouble and stopped lending!
Mark says
Ok thanks a lot Sara, it has only been wonga that I have ever had loans from for thousands, ill send them my credit file now, there is basically nothing on it though, I have been waiting nearly 3 months since I complained to the ombudsman also and I’m wondering if I should ring them and see if there’s any update or is there no point, thanks again Sara
Sara (Debt Camel) says
I think it’s worth calling, just in case they are waiting for the credit record from you!
Donna says
Complicated question here:
Was made bankrupt in 1990 and discharged the year after. After the 6 years of restrictions elapsed I enjoyed a debt free life for 10 years until losing my job and change in circumstances. I was forced into the hands of these shysters with rolling loans for a period of two years.
Happily, I’m now back on track but would like to reclaim the interest and fees that I feel were completely unjustified and incommensorate with fair lending. Wonga have made me an offer that I consider to be grossly unfair. I understand that any money claimed back during a bankruptcy would go straight to OR, but my question is: does this still apply given that I would be claiming based on loans taken out a good 20 years post bankruptcy. And if so, why?
Many thanks in advance for any replies. xx
Sara (Debt Camel) says
Any refunds for loans after you were discharged from bankruptcy will all be yours.
Donna says
That’s so great to hear. I’ll be pursuing this with the ombudsman then as don’t want them getting away with this derisory offer. Thank you so much for the quick response, and also for the service you’ve provided here. Your efforts are so appreciated.

Its been 5 months since i escalated final decissions from Wonga and Lending Stream to FOS. Not heard a peep from an adjudicator, is this normal are others waiting like me?
Sara (Debt Camel) says
Are any of the loans over 6 years old?
Sam says
Hi Sara, at the time i passed all the details to the FOS, none of the loans were over 6 years old, though a couple are now. Is it normal to be waiting this long without a response?
Sara (Debt Camel) says
The clock stops when you send the FOS your claim, so it doesn’t matter how long this drags on. all your loans will still be treated as under 6 years.
I suggest you phone up the ombudsman and ask.

Hi All ,
I finally got paid out but I called them at least 4 times a week and in the end had to threaten them with legal action . I did get messed about for about 3 months after the final decision but did final get paid out .
Advice keep at them and tell them your logging everything also wants I started saying I know the calls being recorded so I am just telling you this is affecting my wellbeing (which it was it was very stressful) and I just wanted this on the record they started to responded a bit more effective .
Good luck everyone and don’t give up you are entitled to what you have paid .
Village Idiot says
I’ve now got an adjudicator saying Wonga should refund the majority of loans, Wonga have 14 days to respond. I’ve had a good scan back on this thread to see how it normally goes from here and can see the Wonga response is quite random, from ignoring the ruling, to insisting on an Ombudsman, to fairly quickly paying out, to making a counter offer. Some people get taken for an absolute ride, for months, others a fairly quick happy ending. Not fair. Has anyone got an up to date idea of how they are behaving right now?
I’ve got a table of the list of loans and what the interest would have been if they had been paid off on time, and that is £6000 plus, but I was in the habit of trying to pay them off quicker to save interest (at the expense of paying proper bills, re-borrow to pay those bills, rinse and repeat) so the interest refund will probably be half this. Deciding if any Wonga counter offer is reasonable is going to be tricky.
Thanks to Sara and all for such a super forum.
Sara (Debt Camel) says
“Has anyone got an up to date idea of how they are behaving right now?” There is a random element as you have seen.
“I’ve got a table of the list of loans and what the interest would have been if they had been paid off on time, and that is £6000 plus” that figure is completely irrelevant and I suggest you forget you ever calculated it.
Village Idiot says
Don’t worry, I already know. I had another reason to calculate that figure. I’m being realistic. The dilemma is if Wonga offer me £1500, for all I know that might not be bad, or it could be half what it should be. I’ve no way to know.
Laurissa says
Hello,
Has anyone has a partial offer from Wonga and rejected it? What happened at Ombudsman? Wonga said the START of my loans were not affordable and offered -£3800they say they changed their policy in aug 2014 and loans after that were. Affordable But I had another 38 loans in that time with them so you can imagine the interest! Not to mention, quick quid and pounds to pocket and sunny loans aswell ! Just wondered if anyone else had a similar response?
Sara (Debt Camel) says
“they say they changed their policy in aug 2014 and loans after that were affordable ”
This is a very common response from Wonga. They did improve their lending in Au 2014 but that was just moving it from DREADFUL to BAD. They are still making way too many unaffordable loans, probably including your 38! Loads of readers have got good refunds from Wonga for these later loans by going to the Ombudsman.
Village Idiot says
I’ve had some great news, Wonga have quickly agreed to settle in line with the adjudicator’s findings so the settlement of just under £4000, less what I still owe them – which is £1150 – will be on its way to me soon.
That’s from Wonga originally offering me £300 for two of about 45 loans.
Together with a £2500 win with JD Williams this has been a roaring success and it is no exaggeration to say that without the existence of this site I wouldn’t have known to claim either, so thanks again to Sara.
In line with others I know the preference for happy site users who want to donate by way of thanks is to give to the local CAB so I will do that.

I prefer people to donate locally – each local citizens Advice is a separate charity and many of them are really struf=glling as they have had their funding cut by the local authority.

Hi, I am 3 days short of the 8 weeks that Wonga have to respond and was just wondering, does the offer, if i get one, come by email usually and how is the refund usually paid. By Cheque? Thank you

Email and bank transfer is normal! Hope you get a good offer.
Dan says
Hi Sara,
I have been offered £2,961 from Wonga only for some of my loans and have now been sent a SOA’s and my loans date back to 2011 which are now over 6 years old and Wonga hasn’t included these in there refund, they amount to another £2,125 – would I get anywhere by taking these to the ombudsman? or do they not look at loans over 6 years old?
Sara (Debt Camel) says
Has Wonga refunded all the loans that are less than 6 years old?
Cases with loans over 6 years old can go to the Ombudsman but they will be VERY slow – the Ombudsman thinks it can look at these and some other lenders are paying out, but not Wonga, they are just arguing with the ombudsman at the moment.
Dan says
Hi Sara,
They have not yet refunded the first lot as I am yet to accept it. If I accept can I go back through the Ombudsman for the older ones?
What are the chances of winning?
Also there is one loan worth £500 in fee’s which was my last loan in 2013 yet they haven’t included that in there offer to me??
Sara (Debt Camel) says
The chances are excellent that you will win a lot more by going to the Ombudsman.
But you can’t “split your case”. If you accept the refund on the earlier loans, that is in full settlement of your whole complaint, so the Ombudsman won’t look at the recent loans.
If getting the extra 500 (plus 8% interest would take it to 700) would be enough for you decide to accept the larger offer and give up on the £2000+ for the recent loans, then you could go back to Wonga and say if they include this extra loan you will accept it, otherwise the case is going to the Ombudsman.
Dan says
Ok Thanks Sara – Also I am now looking to escalate to the ombudsman… what is involved with this and what do I have to provide?
Dan says
Thanks so much for your invaluable advice!!
Now I have my SOA’s is it sensible to work out from that what fee’s and interest I would be due as a refund or is that not an accurate way of doing it?
I think I’m going to say £5,000 + 8% Interest and I will settle the complaint now or otherwise I’ll go to the ombudsman – my current offer from them is £2,961.21 including 8% interest.
Sara (Debt Camel) says
yes work out the fees and interest from the SOA. The only reason this would be wrong is if some loans were missed off – with Wonga that is unlikely unless you changed your email address and they have only found some of them.
Wonga usually ignore offers to settle, but you could try!
Ross says
Thanks to this site for all the advice. Had 60 loans from wonga over 5 years, I complained first last December and they upheld the complaint but only offered one refund of £26!!!
Financial Ombudsman supported me and told them to refund 54 loans totalling £4650 which I received last week!
Stick in there and keep going people! Thanks to the site!
Chris Bartlett says
Hi Ross,
It sounds like it’s worked out for you! Do you mind me asking what the dates of the loans that were reviewed were? I’ve had some that were over 6 years old that Wonga have said they won’t look at ( the standard response) but they upheld the latter ones(2012 onwards).
Thanks
Ross says
I only had a few over 6 years old so removed them from the complaint and went for all the ones within 6 years…
Donna says
How do you work out roughly what these payday lenders owe back to people taking the loads out?
Help please
Sara (Debt Camel) says
You need to look at how much interest and charges you have paid. The first template here https://debtcamel.co.uk/payday-loan-refunds/ asks for a list of your loans, so that will give you the information on what you borrowed and what you paid. If these totals are £900 and £1400, then you would have paid £600 in interest and charges.
On top of this 8% simple interest is added. That’s complicated to work out!
BUT you normally won’t get a refund for the first few loans.
You don’t need to work this out when making a complaint – just ask for a refund of all interest and charges. But having a rough idea comes in useful if Wonga make you an offer, so you can see how good it is.
Christian says
Adjudicator has just picked up my Wonga case, 42 loans over 3 and half years.
Some ups and downs in borrowing usually by borrowing elsewhere to pay it off.
How long roughly does the adjudication process take?
In total paid nearly £7000 in interest and fees, I don’t expect all of it back.
Ella says
After the adjudicator picked mine up at the end of July 2018 I got my Wonga claim agreed on 3rd August 2018. A refund of around 4 to five thousand, I just need Wonga to agree now !!

Hope you don’t mind me asking, when did you send this complaint to the FOS?
Thanks

January complaint went in, March escalated to ombudsman, May chased found out it was on hold due to jurisdiction over 6 years, dropped first two loans off bought it back into jurisdiction. Friday had a mail saying was picked up and today had initial response which Wonga have until 20th to respond to.
nicola handley says
Britain’s biggest payday lender, Wonga, has received a £10m emergency cash injection from shareholders to save the company from going bust. The short-term loan firm said the development was a way of coping with a surge in claims from former customers seeking compensation.
The claims, said Wonga, related to loans taken out before 2014, when outrage over its payday lending offers prompted new rules to cap the cost of borrowing. The UK’s payday lending industry has been criticised by campaigners who claim its high interest rates and marketing tactics unfairly target vulnerable borrowers.
A Wonga spokesman, confirming the £10m injection, said its shareholders remained “fully supportive of management’s plans for the business”.

Hi,
I put in a complaint to the ombudsman in January and have had no updates from them except asking for bank statements – i called them in the middle of June and was told it was with the adjudicator , but again ive not heard anything since.
Anyone know roughly how long i will need to wait now to get a response from the adjudicator – i dont like to keep chasing them as i know they are busy but do you think i should chase them up again as it seems to be taking ages?
Had over 100 loans so hoping to get something back – how are people getting the responses back? email, letter or phonecall?
Its Wonga, ive said not to look at any loans over 6yrs old as there were only a couple of small loans
Christian says
Mine went in in January, had to phone and chase and found out it was due to a couple of loans being over 6years, they removed these at my request and today issued a decision which is now just waiting Wonga’s response.

Thank you for the reply.
That sounds similar to mine, hopefully I should hear something soon.
Did they let you know by email?
Good luck with your claim

I had responses by email
Andy says
HI Sara,
I contacted Wonga making an affordability complaint (~41 loans / 30k) on 7th June, and have had no correspondence from them – literally nothing, and am now over the 2 month threshold for responses. I have followed up via email to give them chance to respond and even given what I believe to be a good offer which would save them some money on refunding the full amount versus still giving me a payout in interest etc.
As there is no contact, is my only option to go to FO – or should I go down the line of calling which I always find is a risk due to difficulty proving call logs? Can I provide the FO any extra details to accelerate the issue?
Thank you.
Sara (Debt Camel) says
If you haven’t had any acknowledgement at all, I think you should phone up and ask why not.
If you go to the FOS now, make it clear you have not had a response within 8 weeks and add a screen shot showing your email to them with the date.
andy says
Thanks Sara – by way of an update, I emailed a follow up and called as you suggested. They stated they emailed me back 1 week after my initial complaint in June asking for further information as they could not trace me on their system.
Strangely, and rather easily catching them out, they had replied to the email I used for my account – which I had not included in my original email – therefore meaning they had accessed my details.
In any case, I provided the details they were asking for – again reiterated my new contact details, and asked them to accelerate the process due to the time now having lapsed.
I will keep a log as this process moves forward to hopefully let everyone see timelines/outcomes etc.
Andrew says
Wonga only agree to refund on two loans when i initlaly complained – FOS view is refunds need to be made on 41 loans . A good pointer for anyone thinking about taking a low offer, Dont.
“how to put things right
• refund all interest and charges that Mr X paid on the second top up on loan nine to loan 43, and the first top up on loan 44 to 50;
• offset any redress against any amount correctly outstanding;
• pay interest of 8% simple a year on all refunds from the date of payment to the date of settlement*;
• remove any entries about the second top up on loan nine to loan 43 from Mr x credit file;
• remove any negative information about the first top up on loan 44 to loan 50 from Mr X’s credit file.
*HM Revenue & Customs requires Wonga to take off tax from this interest. Wonga must give Mr Browning a certificate showing how much tax it’s taken if he asks for one.
what you need to do now
Please get in touch by 17 August 2018 to let us know if you agree with me and are now willing to settle the complaint.
If you disagree, please let us know why and send in any new information you have. We’ll take another look at the complaint and tell you what we think. You can also ask for an ombudsman to make a final decision – but unless you have new information, it’s unlikely their decision will be different from mine. If we don’t hear back from you by 17 August 2018 an ombudsman may make a final decision – based on the information we have so far.
Phil Gardner says
Currently have 4 complaints with the Ombudsman at the moment but have just had the first one come back from the adjudicator and have wrote to Wonga recommending that they refund all interest from loans 3-13, around £1100, plus 8% and correct my credit file. They have given Wonga til the 23rd Aug to reply and either accept or decline.
Out of interest, do you know what the chances are of either accepting or refuting the recommendation?
Thanks
Phil
Sara (Debt Camel) says
They accept a lot of adjudicator decisions but equally reject some very clear cases. All you can do is wait.
Phil Gardner says
Wonga have come back and accepted the decision, now waiting for the final redress amount :).
1 down, 3 to go. Thanks for your help with this!
Sara (Debt Camel) says
Good to hear!

Did you get your redress yet Phil? I’m still waiting the same as you :) I accepted minr through the Ombudsman last Friday and had Wonga say within 14 days on Tuesday.

Hi Sara, Only just reading this and kicking myself. I have recently accepted an offer from Wonga of £988 but they only honoured something like 5 of 18 loans. Have i messed it up
Sara (Debt Camel) says
Oh dear, yes you may have been able to get a lot more by going to the Ombudsman.
How recently was this? If it was yesterday, phone up and say you have changed your mind!
But otherwise, there is probably nothing you can do unless EITHER Your Wonga reply didn’t tell you you had the right to go to the Ombudsman (that would be surprising, they normally include that) OR there was something factually wrong in what they told you eg the wrong number of loans so that their offer was misleading.
Cally says
Hi ???? I’ve had an offer via the Ombudsman for a refund with Wonga, I’m just trying to make a rough calculation on the amount (minus the 8% statutory interest – treating that as a bonus) – do you get a refund on the fee aswell as the interest? I.e wonga charged me a fee of between £5.50 – £22.00 each time they lent to me, depending on the amount? Xx
Thanks in advance z
