The administration of WDFC, the legal company who operated the Wonga brand, was completed in August 2020.
The company was finally dissolved in December 2020.
See Companies House records for details.
Background to the administration – rising complaint numbers
A payday loan is “unaffordable” if repaying meant you had to get into more debt, by borrowing again or getting behind on bills or other debts. So you may have repaid all your loans but still have a good claim for a refund of the interest you paid.
When Wonga went under there were over 200,000 people with current loans from Wonga – many of them had a good case for the interest to be removed from their balance so they only repay what they borrowed.
The Administrators proposals set out the reasons why Wonga went into administration. These were the increasing number of affordability complaints, especially from Claims Companies, and the decision by the Financial Ombudsman that FOS could look at loans over 6 years old, going back to 2007.
There were 24,000 affordability complaints awaiting a decision by Wonga and 9,500 complaints against Wonga with the Financial Ombudsman when Wonga ceased trading on 30 August 2018.
Details on the Administration
The Administrators have made various progress reports (available from Companies House) and statements during 2018-20:
- in October 2018, the Administrators published their Proposals, detailing how they planned to handle the administration. Creditors voted to approve these Proposals.
- progress report to end February 2019;
- Witness Statement in April 2019;
- progress report to end August 2019.
An online claim page was set up in April 2019 for Wonga customers to submit claims for refunds. The deadline for sending in a claim was 30 September 2019.
The Administrators assessed all claims using an automated tool. This took account of:
- all loans, including those over 6 years old
- how large a loan was compared to a customer’s income;
- how often someone borrowed without significant gaps;
- whether there were indications of hardship such as missed payments;
- if there is a balance outstanding for the right of set-off.
Where it decided one or more loans were unaffordable, it calculated how much interest should be refunded and added statutory interest at 8%.
In August 2019 the Administrators starting sending emails to people saying whether their claims have been successful or rejected.
In September, the Administrators sent an update on progress up to end August 2019. Key points include:
- at end August, 389,621 claims for unaffordable payday lending have been accepted by the administrators;
- the total value of these claims is c £460million – an average of c £1,200 a claim.
- £23m of outstanding loans have been collected. The Administrators say that outstanding loans are being taken into account and given the right of set-off where the customer has a claim for unaffordable loans.
- The remaining loan book will not be sold to a debt collector.
At this point the Administrators were saying that payments would be made by 30 January 2020.
29 January 2020 – administrators announce 4.3p in the pound
On 29 January 2020, the Wonga administrators announced that they will be paying 4.3p in the pound to unsecured creditors, including all the 400,000 people who are owed a refund for unaffordable lending.
The administrators have now given the final numbers:
- they assessed 401,202 claims as being valid;
- of these 358,129 are being paid 4.3% of their assessed compensation value;
- the remaining 43,073 also owed a balance on a loan to wonga, so their compensation has been used to clear or reduce that balance.
What happens next:
- the money should be paid within the next 4 weeks. This has come as a surprise as people had been told it would be paid by the end of January;
- the loans that are being refunded should be removed from your credit record in the next 6 weeks.
My comment – ripped off by Wonga and now let down by the regulators
The administrators told people they would get “significantly less” than that amount as there would not be enough money to pay the claims in full.
But many people will have been hoping for more than 4.3% and are very upset.
It is not the administrators’ fault there is so little money to be divided between so many people. It is the fault of the regulators – first the OFT and then the FCA – that they allowed Wonga to break the rules saying that affordability should be checked
And now the regulators have failed to ensure that these Wonga victims get the compensation they should have. When a PPI firm went under, the Financial Services Compensation Scheme stepped in and people with PPI claims got paid in full. But the FCA has not extended the FSCS to cover payday lenders.
This isn’t just a problem for the hundreds of thousands of Wonga victims. Borrowers from many payday lenders have been unable to get proper compensation after the lender has had to close. This will apply to QuickQuid, the money shop, Payday UK and Payday Express borrowers as well.
The FCA needs to rethink this and provide a safety net for people who were mis-sold unaffordable loans.
Readers comments – Shock and disappointment
This a brief overview of the hundreds of comments below this article.
Some people are happy to be getting anything:
- “I am only getting just shy of £25 but for the sake of completing a 30 second form it’s not too bad.”
- “I will be getting £79.93 of the £1854.17 I was owed. Better than nothing!”
- “£35 out of a possible £800. I wasn’t expecting much anyway. I’m more interested in having the 25 wonga loans removed from my credit file.”
The administrators had said people would get “significantly less” than the claim, but many people were hoping for at least 10%:
- “I got mine £88.67 – claim was £2057.05 – I was expecting at least a couple hundred.”
- “Claim was 3034, getting 130. By considerably less I didn’t think it would be over 95% of it. That is ridiculous.”
- “To receive £44.10 from a claim of £1023.00 is insulting to be honest.”
- “Owed £1499, getting £63…what an absolute joke!”
- “4.3% is an absolute disgrace. Although people are trying to be positive they shouldn’t have to. The people who made all the profit here would spend the biggest payout anyone has received on an evening out and not think twice about it.”
- “Gutted…. was hoping for at least the 10% speculated.”
This reader blamed not just Wonga but the regulators:
- “Over £11k accepted reduced down to £480 – my job, my marriage and 4 years of desperation followed by years of rebuilding my life – that’s what the regulators consider that to be worth! Shame on everyone involved in Wonga and the lack of regulation of lenders like them !”
Some are just are delighted that Wonga has gone under:
- “Heads up everyone…We have won in the end! They can no longer be a hindrance to any of us any more!”
- “Mines going to charity. Best thing to have happened is for them to have gone bust”
- ”Thank you Wonga you paid me to continue gambling, I lost everything. Good riddance.”
Many people are also disappointed and shocked that they aren’t being paid by the end of January. Some people getting these refunds are still in difficult financial circumstances and had planned to use the money to pay a bill or some debts.
February 2020 – some clarifications from the administrators
The remaining loans
The administrators have confirmed that no further payments are being accepted and the debts will not be sold to a debt collector. So you don’t have to worry about being taken to court or bailiffs.
But the debts are not technically being written off. They will remain on your credit record for 6 years from the default date on your credit record. If you don’t know what this date is, I suggest you check it now.
In practice, now the company in liquidation, if you contact a credit reference agency and say your Wonga debt is incorrect, you can ask the credit reference agency to “suppress” the record as Wonga can no longer say what the right entry should be. See How to correct credit records if the lender has gone under for details.
No deductions are being made for tax
The Administrators have said:
“the Joint Administrators have agreed with HMRC that the payment may be treated for tax purposes as set wholly against the interest and fees element first, and statutory interest second. As a result, where the distribution paid by the administrators to each customer does not exceed the interest and fees claimed by them, no withholding tax will be required to be deducted at source from payments made by the administrators in such cases.”
The simple version of this is:
- the administrators are not taking off any tax.
- there will, therefore, be no tax to have to reclaim.
- the vast majority of people will not have to pay any tax on any part of of the refund even if you are a higher rate taxpayer. The amounts don’t have to be declared if you complete an annual tax return eg if you are self-employed.
A small number of extra payments
A small number of customers were owed money by Wonga for a different reason, for example they may have overpaid on a loan. These extra amounts are also being paid out and you will get 4.3% of them too.
If you were not using a claims company, you should have received a single email at the end of January which mentions both amounts.
If you were using a claims company you should have received two emails, each about one of the amounts. If you have only received one email and it mentions a claim which is smaller than the amount you expected, you can contact the administrators, it may be this is the “extra” payment.
Bank account issues
I asked the Administrators why some people are still getting emails asking them to update their bank details. They say:
These emails will be in response to customers’ requests received by the Customer Care team prior to 29 January 2020 providing a secure method by which customers can update their bank account details. Customers should respond to these emails.
I asked the Administrators what will happen if they make a payment and it bounces back to them because the account is no longer open. They say:
Where updated information is available from customers we will attempt to reprocess bounced dividend payments via electronic transfer. Alternatively, we will issue a cheque to the address held on file.
A blogger contacted the Administrators on the 14th February to ask why she hadn’t been paid and was told:
“I can confirm that the joint administrators have commenced distribution of dividend payments to unsecured creditors, including those with redress claims. Given the volume of transactions that need to now take place, the administrators cannot guarantee an exact date when individuals will receive payment but are aiming to complete transactions within the next two weeks.”
February and March – payments started but with problems
I was told by the Administrators on Friday 28th February that 90%+ of payments have been made and they expect to make the rest of payments over the next two weeks by BACS. About 22,000 the following week, about 13,000 the week after. It looks as though the 22,000 group got their money. It’s not clear to me how many of the 13,000 group have.
Many people in the comments below this article were reporting probems. These included people whose bank accounts had never changes. Problems included:
- confusion over whether a claims company has been paid or they will be;
- Wongasaid payment was sent to a claims firm that hadn’t been used;
- Wonga said a cheque was sent to a house you no longer live it;
- Wonga said a payment has been made to your bank account but it hasn’t arrived ;
- Wonga has said a payment was sent to an old bank account despite new bank account details having been given and co0nfirmed as having been received.
On 2 March the Administrators said the payment process was taking longer than expected and payments would continue to about 40,000 people over the next 2 weeks:
The Joint Administrators have now attempted to make dividend payments to over 410,000 creditors… In addition to the payments that were not made we have had approximately 40,000 payments returned to us due to incorrect customer bank details recorded on file with Wonga. We will now begin contacting these customers whose payments were returned, by email, to obtain correct and up-to-date bank account details.
The dividend payment process is taking longer than anticipated and payments will continue to be paid during the next two weeks.
On 19 March the Admistrator’s announced:
The Joint Administrators have now attempted to make dividend payments to over 443,000 creditors representing 98% of the creditor population. This includes payments to creditors whose payments were briefly held back from the initial payment phase whilst additional validation checks were completed to new bank account and/or address details that were provided. The Joint Administrators now continue to focus on the remaining small population of unpaid dividends in order to complete the payment process.
From here on progress was very slow, impeded by lockdown.
End August 2020 – administration ends – do you still have a problem?
Have you not been paid?
The Administrators final report blames the payment problems of Wonga’s poor systems and on creditors who did not update their bank details when requested to. But as many comments below detail, people who had never changed their bank account or who had updated their bank details several times and had each confirmed also experienced prolonged delays.
At 28 Auguest when the administration ended, there were still c 49,000 payments with a total value of £632,000 that had not been made – an average about of £13 per payment. About 70% of these were for amounts owed before the administration, so not affordability complaints.
The Administrators have passed the £632,000 to the Insolvency Service. If any creditors want to claim an unpaid amount, they should email CustomerServicesEAS@Insolvency.gov.uk.
A problem with your credit record
If there is a problem with your credit record then you now need to contact the Credit Reference Agency where the problem is showing – Experian, Equifax or TransUnion. Say you can no longer get an answer from the administrators as the firm has been dissolved so you would like the CRA to “suppress” the credit records (list them) as they are inaccurate.
This problem could have been an error by the administrators, who failed to delete the record. It could be an error by Wonga before the administration: the loan date or balance or default date is wrong – you want the default date to be as early as possible so it drops off sooner – or Wonga may have failed to add a default date.
If the CRA refuses, send the CRA a formal complaint and this can be sent to the Financial Ombudsman. In practice people are getting these sorted with the CRAs without having to go to the ombudsman.
MrsT says
Anyone appealed yet?
Sandra says
Just had my email 16 loans in 15 months all rejected, last 5 loans were for £1000 ( my income was £1300). I did receive a pay out from Wonga for last 3 loans. I was considering appealling, just concerned reading this part of email “If you would like to appeal the decision straight with the court you have 21 days from the date of this email to appeal, which will be at the risk of your own expense. ” anyone know what expense that would be ?
Sara (Debt Camel) says
Can you say exactly what payout you had for the last three loans?
Sandra says
Hi Sarah I received £1500 for the last 3 loans which were the only ones under 6 years.
Leanne says
Just received an email from Wonga requesting a photo of bank card/statement with account number and sort code and of drivers license/ passport as payments will be made by electronic payments.
Dan says
Hi everyone,
Does anyone know what happens for people who no longer have the same bank account they did when they used wonga?
I am worrying that I will not be able to let them know my new bank details for repayment.
Thanks.
Itsme says
On the wonga website is says if your bank details have changed to amend them on there
Andy says
You should get an email to verify your bank details and a proof of ID ie driving licence passport anyway mate
Charlotte says
Hi Andy,
Hope you don’t mind me asking but I got a very small amount to come, Wonga has my bank details, I read you put something about having to send in your id to Wonga?
Thanks.
Charlotte.
Davros says
Had an e-mail today from Wonga administrators that my claim had an accepted claim value of £2,020 (with last 4 digits of my bank account number) – however no idea what percentage of this I’ll actually see (20% would be around £400). Given that I didn’t owe them anything at time of administration I’ll have to regard this as a nice January bonus!
Stephen says
Will be lucky if it’s 20%. Expecting maybe 5% tops.
Davros says
You’re probably right……
Stephen says
just got an email from them saying you log into your account and change your details on there.
if for whatever reason you can’t log on you should contact the customer care team
Lew says
I complained in December 2018 and I still haven’t had an email. I had 40+ loans in 4 years I know I’m only going to get about 73p in redress however I’m still keen to know!
Joseph says
Same here! It’s the waiting that’s more frustrating I feel
Col says
I haven’t even had an email , not looking too promising for me !!
Cfitz says
I’ve noticed nobody has put any comments about redress since the 3rd ?
A. says
I’ve still not had an email
Chris says
Just in case it helps people, the email I received had gone straight into my spam folder, I normally just empty it so fortunately I saw it was genuine before I took that action.
Beverley W says
Would you mind say what the email address is that they used to contact you from I haven’t had my email and Yahoo! Has been done all morning today so it might have gone astray
Patrick Barker says
customercomplaints@wonga.com
Patrick Barker says
I had my redress email this week, also today they asked for my bank details and proof of ID
PF says
Yes I have just had the same email – things must be progressing
Claire says
I had my offer 2 weeks ago and was today asked to provide ID and proof of my bank details, when trying to send the requested info I keep getting an error saying storage on the link is full and to request a new link-possibly due to many customers sending this information?
Sian says
That’s interesting! I’ve had my email through so hopefully I’ll get the second email soon. Was it from the same address?
Claire says
It was the same address however for some reason the 2nd email went straight to spam. This didn’t happen with the 1st
Jessica says
How much less are they paying you? I had an email saying it would be substantially less then what was actually owed.
Sara (Debt Camel) says
No one will know for several months. Everyone will be [paid the same percentage.
Kieran says
Wonder if the working in alphabetical order ive heard nothing. Surname is M
Diddy says
There seems to be no order. My surname starts with P…..I uploaded today and my statement wasn’t clear enough so tried to upload and it looks like the system crashed….seems they are doing maintenance to the site as I assume many people have also uploaded.
Jean Heath says
I`m concerned I have`nt had an e mail yet even though they are sending out second e mails asking for bank details.
This seems a strange way to do things.
Itsme says
Yes same with me, i had back to back loans with them literally paying and borrowing again on the same day for weeks on end. I replied to the original email back in march and have heard nothing apart from the email saying they received my claim and i dont need to do anything else.
Now others are being asked for bank details so yes im worried too
Jean Heath says
Mind you, even people who have had all their claims rejected have at least had an e mail so lets not give up hope just yet.
Tom matthews says
Those whose claims were accepted in full are being prioritised.
Sara (Debt Camel) says
There is no reason to think this is correct.
Nina says
I thought if you are accepting to the offer and don’t appeal within 21 days from the date the claims assessment was sent, they proceed to the next email of acquiring your bank details etc?
The truth says
Wouldn’t exactly say there being prioritised.
They’ll just have to wait for exactly as long as everybody else.
Beverley W says
I don’t know about that. I was one of the first group to get my offer and did not appeal but I’ve not been asked for my bank details. From what I can tell the whole thing is a bit hot and miss.
Andy says
All my loans were excepted in full and I’ve had both emails but I still wouldn’t say we’re being prioritised they’ve still gotta pay everyone by a certain deadline so it’s just a waiting game I guess does seem strange that some people have had no email and some have had the 2
Gary Robertson says
I got my redress value at just over £1,700
Had the email to upload my documents
Couple of hundred quid and I would be happy
Peter says
Hello,
Assuming my claim is accepted, can I have the loan removed from my credit report.
Sara (Debt Camel) says
That is probably what will happen. Wonga could choose to just remove negative information, but that actually takes them more time and work and my guess is they will go for the easy approach of deleting the records.
Kate says
Iv had an email asking for a photo of my bank statement or card, and photo ID. Iv since married and my surname has changed from the original wonga account. I also dont have any photo ID. Im not sure what to do. I have emailed them to let them know but i also think its risky sending photos of my bank statement or bank card online too.
Andy says
I’ve received the email to confirm my bank details too
Laura says
Use your passport or driving license, you must have either one to have gotten a marriage license
Kate says
No i dont have any, i used my birth certificate when i got married
lynda says
i had an email saying i was partially accepted back on the 20th of august but i haven’t heard anything else from them
Cfitz says
Does anybody have loans over six years that have been excepted for redress?
PF says
Yep mine were from 2009.
Cfitz says
That’s good only mine go back to 2010 and they turned me down once but before I could go to the fos they went into administration, but I did read somewhere they would look at older loans.
Victoria Thomas says
I put in a claim for a refund August 2018 and have had regular updates regarding the administration process yet I’ve not received anything since beginning of July this year. And ive not received any email regarding a refund..is there anyone else still waiting or should I email them for an update?
ClaireR says
Hi Vicotira
I am in the same position, submitted in July 2018, I emailed for an update a couple of weeks ago
as not heard anything, and had this back “We are writing to inform you that we have now fully validated the claim you submitted, case reference: ####
The Joint Administrators will assess your claim in due course. No further action is required by you at present.
The Joint Administrators will email you following the assessment of you your claim.
Very frustrating. But just got to hang in there.
Cfitz says
Yes I’ve not heard anything since June I was told they would be in touch when they were looking at my claim.
Jean Heath says
I have not heard anything either. I e mailed the 2 weeks ago but had no reply. I guess and am hoping we will be contacted before the deadline at the end of the month.
Col says
I am also waiting for a response so I reached out to them and they responded with –
The Joint Administrators will email you once we are in a position to do so, following the assessment of your claim. No further action is required by you at present.
Should there be any delay in the process; the Joint Administrators will be in touch by email. However, due to the high volume of claims, we are unable to provide updates before this. We will also keep the website and our FAQs updated with any significant updates.
Still waiting
Michelle Clayton says
Yes I am still waiting for a reply too- I thought perhaps they hadn’t got my claim so I filled in again or portal and couldn’t submit as they said they had already received it- I guess it’s just a waiting game!
Helerobe says
My last email was on August 22nd saying what was partially accepted. It was over 6k although I won’t get much but anything is a bonus. That gave me 21 days to appeal and I haven’t so I’m guessing I won’t anymore until after that date passes. But it is all guess work. The eldest acceptance was from 2012. And several from 2013.
Cc says
I went to the website for an update, then thought I should login to check bank details/ phone number correct.
It then wouldn’t work, stated “website encountered unexpected error” and the tab at the top was “wonga.com/login/debt-sold”….,
I thought we were to have access throughout the administration process and would have expected some sort of uptate on claims before any accounts were sold on??
Christopher says
Ok, so I have been given my figure which I mentioned above (somewhere), 6 of 8 claims accepted, I have sent an appeal for one of the claims that was rejected as it was for £865 and was more than 50% of my wage at that time. Just curious if anyone else is waiting for an appeal to be reviewed?
CeeBee says
Received my email from the complaints portal on 27th August and have checked my spam folder for further communication. Nothing as yet. Wonder if it will land when the 21 days to appeal has passed? They’ve accepted on 15 of my 18 loans and calculate the redress as £7477! Scary looking at some of the figures: on one £1100 loan I paid £1050 in interest alone! I actually complained to Wonga themselves shortly before they went into administration and they responded saying that they believed my claim was ‘frivolous’ and rejected me out of hand; always did know I had sufficient evidence to claim unaffordability.
Emily says
It’s crazy isn’t it! My amount is slightly higher than that! Here’s to hoping we get a little more than just a couple 100 back of all that money we paid out
Russell says
Hi – I still haven’t received a judgement email from Wonga on what my redress is (before the process of working out how much pence in each £ we will received and wondered if others are in the same boat?
I had a complaint with the FOS at the time of administration, and received emails from the Administrators saying my claim was included and I’d receive communications regarding the redress on my account. Some info would be useful :)
I’m hoping others are still waiting for their email too…
GimmeMyMoney says
I’m in the same boat.
Tony says
I am still waiting .if i contact them , they keep saying they are behind .
AST says
Hi Russell,
Like you my claim has been in a while and I haven’t heard anything. I emailed Wonga a few weeks ago and they replied straight away saying that they wouldn’t even be looking at my complaint until after the deadline (end of September). I’m a tad worried that I may have slipped through the net, but if I haven’t heard anything within the next few weeks will contact them again. Strange that so many people are receiving confirmation/refusal?!
Laura says
I’m totally confused by your comment. They have confirmed they have your case but your worried you will slip through the net? It’s not strange so many people are receiving confirmation m/refusal they are just working through the claims!
Katie says
My ex took out a wonga loan in my name in 2012, we were on income support at the time due to both being 19 and in college. I think the loan was for about £300. The money went into a joint account, which she withdrew in cash and later closed the account. I’m unsure what, if any, repayments were made at all. But I know the loan was apparently written off in 2014 (I had left my partner by then, but I was at university so still not a proper income) when those new affordability laws came in.
I’ve had an email from wonga inviting me to claim. But should I just not bother? Seeing as the loan was never paid off anyway, and for ~£300 borrowing I imagine I wouldnt get more than a few quid back anyway. I definitely do not still owe them money, it doesn’t show up on any of my credit reports or anything. I paid off all other debts she took out in my name by 2017.
I’m just wondering if I made a claim here, would they reinstate the loan and come after me for whatever was outstanding? I believe it was over 500/600+ with interest..
Am I right in thinking it’s just not worth it, and to leave it as it is. I’m trying to improve my credit score after she damaged it so much.
Sara (Debt Camel) says
If there was just one loan and some of it was written off, it is VERY VERY unlikely that you would get any money back by making a claim. They wouldn’t be able to come after you for the balance, but really you aren’t going to get anything so why bother.
Lew says
I’ve still had nothing, checked emails and junk. People who complained in February 2019 have had their decisions so they could be going backwards by the looks of this since mine was December 2018
Winner says
I have previously worked in a large scale operation with one of the big 4 around mis selling of financial isnstruments which in terms of timeline falls somewhere in between PPI and payday loans. There were cases coming up till the last day where people complained. There is no order of review. It is literally name in a hat style. A number of spreadsheets are drawn up and each week a new ‘cut’ of complaints will be drawn out and reviewed. I would suggest there is no reason to worry. My guess is that people will keep hearing from them well into the new year close to the payout times. They will likely send out a blanket communication once all reviews are completed with a percentage of payment
GimmeMyMoney says
I’ve worked for one of the big four and customer complaints of this type (from customers and FOS) would be dealt with in order.
Morca says
My understanding is this is not a PPI and merely based on the administration process. We can’t really compare the two as one is insurance and the other is a claim for unaffordable loans. Wonga is the first pay day lending company to go into administration so its difficult to know how the administrators are handling the claims. We just have to be patient and wait
Sara (Debt Camel) says
Wonga isn’t the first payday lender to go into administration. Cash genie, CFO, Cheque centres, Minicredit and many more have already done so.
There are no rules here about what order the administrators have to do this in. They can choose any approach which seems efficient to them in order to minimise their costs, which leaves more money to be paid out.
It will make no difference to the amount of money you eventually get if your claim is considered now on in a month or two.
I do understand that people are keen to get any news, but there is nothing you can do except wait.
Lisa says
I was made an offer in Aug 18 and accepted and 2 days later they went in to administration so never received the payment. I still have not received as much as an email from the administrators and when I chased wonga they said your claim is still open and you will not hear back until after 30 sept.
claire says
Do they look at how many loans youve had and then calculate how many you are owed, i.e. did you only take out 18 and they accept 15? Ive taken out over 200 with them so I presume they are going to have to check each one .
Sara (Debt Camel) says
They have developed a program to decide which loans should be refunded. So this doesn’t take any more time for a case such as yours with a large number of loans.
Richard says
As an above comment said, I’d again encourage anyone who hasn’t had a response to check their spam folders. I’m with Gmail and had an email three weeks ago confirming my claim was accepted and the amount. Surprised Gmail would do this again after I already marked the confirmation email as not being spam when that one landed in my spam folder.
I’ve now gone into settings on Gmail and set a rule for it it to both always not mark emails with the word “Wonga” in as spam, and to send any emails from “customercomplaints@wonga.com” to my priority Inbox.
GimmeMyMoney says
I check my spam folder as regularly as my inbox.
There’s a number of reasons why an email lands there.
Kieran says
Why are people getting so concerned this early on? The deadline to make a claim hasn’t even passed. They will hace tens of thousands to get through. Be patient!
Bill says
Exactly. Everyone banging on about why they haven’t received an email and such, speculating the worst. Pick up the phone, call wonga and ask for an update, it’s as simple as that. I did, mine is being processed and I should receive an email in next 2 or 3 weeks I was told.
Andy says
If I was getting a full refund I’d be all about it but seeing as it’s gonna be pence in the pound it’s not gonna be life changing to anyone I’d imagine
Still better in our pockets than theres I suppose
Claire says
I was asked last week to provide bank details. I’ve provided them and I had an email today confirming my bank details have been received and updated.
Helerobe says
I rang them 020 7138 8330 as I got an email about my claim being partially accepted on the 22nd. Was on hold for about 3 mins then spoke to someone. She said next step is an email asking for bank details etc which many people here have said. She also confirmed one hadn’t gone out as was worried I’d missed or deleted it. She said that would be soon then next step is administrators confirming how much and when. So there we are. If you are concerned phone them.
Christian says
Thanks for posting this, your position is exactly the one I’m in.. I’m going to give them a call tomorrow I think :)
nicola Barker says
Hi not sure if this helps but Iv just called the number and been told that my assessment will be done by end of September, I will receive further email to confirm bank details and no payments will be made until Jan 2020 😩
Hazza the jazza says
With regards to the pence in the pound people will receive, will everybody’s be the same?
Will somebody get 10p and the next person 30p
Sara (Debt Camel) says
Everyone will get the same.
Lee Jackson says
Could the payment be before Christmas.? Just be nice to have for Christmas treat the family.???
Laura says
It Says quite clearly in all communication end of Jan
Lyndsay says
I had 2 loans from 2012 back to back, one has been accepted and one hasn’t, does anyone know why?
Also mine is for a sum of £227 but was told I wouldn’t receive that amount…. why is that?
Thanks for any help
Mike says
They have rejected any loans they have deemed to be affordable and they are in administration so you will only receive say 10p in the pound back. The actual amount will depend on how much money they can raise from the sale of assetts etc.
Laura Fisher says
Do anyone know if you can provide additional info? I got myself in a total mess with this company plus 3 others. Instead of defaulting on these I borrowed off my parents to repay everything so it looks like I could afford to pay it all off but seriously couldnt. .. does anyone know if you can provide this sort of extra info?
Lew says
Still haven’t had any email from wonga, anyone in the same boat?
Kellz says
Me, I first complained in 2017. Still waiting for an email. I’m not worrying about it though.
Lew says
I’m not I’m just very confused on how their handling it all. Saw someone with30+ Loans in 3 years have them all refused
Kellz says
It is confusing for us but I don’t suppose it matters as long as we all get a reply.
My Loans go back as far as 2010/2011 and were with the ombudsman and hadn’t been looked at before the administration because of the 6 year rule.
Maybe these cases just take a little longer.
David Bird says
I hadn’t heard anything and sent email for update.
Got a reply back saying to call them which I did and looks like I still have about £300 outstanding.
They said although no decision made.to claim yet if I cleared the outstanding that my claim may be looked at in a more favourable light
Is this right or just a typical collections department ploy?.
Looking back it looks like from emails that I had loans with Wonga 2013 up until FCA ruling as well as having the following:
Shopacheck 2014
Payday UK 2014
Spring coin 2015
Avant credit 2015
Peachy 2015
Sara (Debt Camel) says
“They said although no decision made.to claim yet if I cleared the outstanding that my claim may be looked at in a more favourable light” that is an astonishing statement. Could you ask them to put that in writing. I very much doubt that it is true.
It would be a completely unfair way to handle complaints.
AND it is actively misleading as it ignored the fact that you have “the right of set off”.
Chris says
Just to let people know:
Received an email today from Wonga saying that if I wanted to amend the bank account details in order to receive the redress, I could do so by logging in and changing them through My Account. Did this but the system is not letting me make the change. Got onto chat and they have said that this email has been sent out in error and that they will send an email to customers with a secure link to make these changes.
StevieC says
I have just spoken to Wonga, they are working through claims and aim to have processed all claims by the end of October 2019.
They confirmed payments will start as soon as they know the the % payment. Probably November onwards.
Morca says
Payments by Jan 2020 . I called them today and was told there would be no payments before jan2020.
Brad says
Hi Sara,
Been using this site for a while and has helped me hugely.
I’ve noticed a lot of people receiving emails from Wonga with redress amounts but I haven’t heard anything.
I put my claim to Wonga last year and they offered me about £500 for 30+ loads that I had. I declined and went to FOS but partway through Wonga went into Admin.
Will my case still be looked into and would I still get the £500 that they offered me + any other redress I’m owed?
Thank you
Brad
Laura says
Brad I’m not being cheeky but Sara has already wrote the answer to everyone of your questions in the above article!
Becci says
It all depends how much they can afford ie 5/10p in the pound. So all payments will be considerably less than your offer when you receive it. If the automated system decides you are owed £500 and it’s 10p to the pound you may get around £50
Ian says
I sent off 100s of pages of statements 4 years worth all in all to help prove the loans were unaffordable and irresponsible lending all before they went into administration worried now these statements wont see the light of day? And it will be simply upto a competer programme that says whether people are intitled to anything is this true?
Sara (Debt Camel) says
yes, the decisions are being made by computer. The administrators have pointed out that if they have to pay a human to look at each case then there will be no money left at all to pay any refunds.
Ian says
Thats my point i fear its not being looked at properly i repeat borrowed for week after week for years but always paid the loan back then took another out so to a computer this may look affordable like alot of customers people paid back on time because the charges were astronomical if they werent, my statements show i was 1000s in debt and borrowed of cards to pay the wonga loans which the computer will not see this.
Sara (Debt Camel) says
If you borrowed every month from wonga for years I will be very surprised if the computer doesn’t assess you as being due a refund.
Bev says
Hi Sara
If that’s the case why does it take so long?
Just asking because it doesn’t make sense
Sara (Debt Camel) says
People can still send in claims until the end of the month. Until then, the administrators can have no idea what the total value of the approved claims will be.
And the administrators may still be selling off assets, including foreign companies. Until that is done, the administrators have no idea how much money there will be to divide between the people owed refunds.
Paul Gratrix says
still havent had any email with an amount or anything despite my claims being submitted before administration
Victoria says
Me Either,I’ve heard nothing apart from a general email which I’m guessing was sent to everyone, regarding What stage they were at and that was in July.Im confused as to why a lot of people have had estimated amounts and been asked for bank details and I’ve heard nothing.
Matt Sanderson says
I’ve read comments on the government stepping in to assist ? Is there any hope on a fair redress payment ?
Many thanks MS
GimmeMyMoney says
I’d imagine the government would only step in to help out the former owners. The Government doesn’t care
X says
Just to let you know the complaint I put in to Quick Quid and Pounds 2 Pocket that was originally declined for 8 loans. I have just had a response from the Financial Omburdsman saying I am entitled to £300 refund of interest and fees for 2 of the loans so it is definatley worth putting a claim in if you have taken out any other pay day loans. Im still waiting to hear back from Wonga after 4 years of borrowing each month
Adam says
Hi,
How did you go about complaining to these companies? Is there a base style letter you send to them, with your details on? Or do you have to list all the loans you want to challenge?
Thanks
Sara (Debt Camel) says
template over here: https://debtcamel.co.uk/payday-loan-refunds/.
You ask for a refund of all your loans, you don’t have to list them. And you can ask for a list of your loans if you don’t have one.
Alex says
Thought it might be worth a mention but Wonga administrators have managed to sell the Polish arm of the company for 97m PLN (about £19.4m). Small amount in the grand scheme of things but confidence that there is some money coming into the pot, just hope that we get to see some of it!!
Emmastewart says
I’ve just sent my new bank details and received an email to confirm this 30mins later. Now I just wait I guess.
Jaqueline says
My claim was put in with Financial Ombudesman in August 2016 ….. then placed on hold while they argued about the 6 year rule …. whilst I’ve received emails updating me have not received any redress letters from them or asking to confirm my details – so if you’ve had a response your lucky …. 3 years and still waiting ! I have phoned them today after seeing the responses here and was told you will hear by end of Oct – I did point out it would have been courteous and Fair if they had dealt in date order which the advisor did agree – so we wait some more !
Catherine says
Mine is the same situation as yours. Have you also submitted the online claim form or do we not need to as had an existing complaint?
Jaqueline says
Catherine I didn’t put in another claim – think the emails we received said it was not necessary – when I checked the claim yesterday they knew I had one, I never filled online portal in – maybe you could ring and check ? X
Hazza the jazza says
Are we expecting an update, from the administrators on 27th September?
Catherine says
Hi I went through the ombudsman with my complaint against Wonga. They went into administration before this was dealt with.
Would I still need to complete their online form?
Stephen says
I honestly don’t know, that’s probably something you’d have to get in touch with the ombudsman to find out.
Personally I’d make a claim directly because the worst that would happen is you get a response saying that your account is already being handled by the ombudsman.
Sara (Debt Camel) says
You should try to complete the online form. It may be rejected because they already have your complaint logged, but this is the easiest way to be sure.
Brad says
I had the same situation, FOS apparently transferred all the complaints they were investigating over to Wonga so they should still be looking into this for you.
Victoria holmes says
Hi i was informed September 18 (ish) that my case would be passed over to the administrators, however I have never heard anything since then from the administrators. I have tried to contact the ombudsman to see if this happened but they have literally ignored my numerous emails and complaints so I don’t even know if it’s been passed over? Any advice
Brad says
Try to log a new claim via the claims portal on Wonga or give them a call and ask if they have your file.
I had the same problem and called them to find out :-)
Darren says
Wong’s have declined my redress. Just received email
It was only a pittance I took out and I only filled in the portal form as they contacted me via email to say I may have a claim
Good luck everyone else though
Chris says
Recieved an email. I don’t remember subbmitting a claim so my first thought was this a scam. It does have my loans listed at the end though so maybe not.
Of the 4 loans, 3 were rejected and the 1 (the largest) was accepted. Not expecting the full amount, but it’s a nice suprise at least.
Sara (Debt Camel) says
It’s not a scam.
Victoria Thomas says
I haven’t even received an email saying anything about my loans.starting to get a bit worried.is there anyone else in same situation? Put my complaint in in August 2018
Colin says
I haven’t received anything either , suppose it’s still a waiting game 🤞
Brad says
Yeah same this end, nothing apart from a generic email saying the Administrators are investigating
GimmeMyMoney says
Same, even the same month
Laur says
It took 8 months fo my reply then another couple month to check bank details and should be paying me next month it does take a very long time
Yash says
9/10ish months before I started receiving replies & information,
PJ says
Had the email today, accepted claim value just over £8.3k. it stipulates many times it’ll be no where near this value so fingers crossed for a half decent percentage!
Craig Bettany says
I’ve had the same but just over 3k. Was well happy till I read about it significantly lower! Lol. After reading different pages about how much will be paid out I think I’ll be lucky getting 200 quid but it’s from years ago so it’s money I didn’t have I suppose, even tho it’s crap they get away with paying so little back of what they owe. I know for a fact when I got all wonga loans I was in no position to pay back wasn’t on enough money and was in a constant cycle of lending off them. Fingers crossed it’s more than expected tho
Leanne says
Also received an email confirming they have accepted some of the loans (although not the largest). It amounts to £900. I’m trying to find out what percentage others have received.
PJ says
Leanne….no one will have rec’d anything yet (not official redress anyway) as all Wonga asset’s are still being collated. We’ll find out in the coming months
Glen says
Had my email come through from Wonga yesterday, totally forgot about it, thought it was a scam email but it wasnt in my spam.
45 loans accepted 2 rejected £8100 offer but as others have said it will be a pittance, at 5% however it would be £400 of unexpected money, I’m guessing they will have my old bank details so I will wait for another email asking me for ID , as others have said this seems legit of them asking for it.
Switching off from it as it’s an unexpected bonus in truth.
Yash says
You will receive an email about 1-3months after that email asking for photo-id & your bank account/sorting number (has to be a statement or bankcard pic showing your name, account number & sorting code (they will tell you to blackout the 16 digit code if you use the card method)
Jane says
Hi,
I had several loans with Wonga around 2012/2013.
I put in a claim with them prior to them going into administration. In August 2018 I had an email saying they accepted my claim and making me offer. I accepted their offer, however as it turned out, my acceptance was only a few days prior to them going into administration so never got any payment from them.
Having read all the information here I assumed I didn’t need to make a new claim as mine had already been accepted. Now I am wondering if I need to make my claims again as I have seen people posting on here that they have recently been contacted by the administrators asking them to confirm bank details etc. I’ve not had any contact like this, should I make my claims again do you you think?
