Is your name in a fraud database?

neon sign saying fraud - is your name on a fraud database? Is this an error? There are three large UK databases aimed at alerting lenders to possible fraudulent applications for borrowing: National Hunter,  Cifas and Sira.

If your name is on one of these connected with fraud you may find it difficult or impossible to take out credit and your bank account may be closed.

But sometimes the information on the databases may be wrong and you need to get it corrected.

In 2020, Cifas recorded over 185,000 cases of identity theft. The numbers in the first half of 2021 went up by 11% – this is a growing problem.

When should you check the fraud databases?

Many people will go their whole lives without ever needing to know anything about these fraud databases, but there are three situations where you may want to find out more.

1) You are being asked to supply more information

If you try to take out a new mobile contract or sign up in a shop for a 0% deal on a new carpet you are buying, then you are contacted later and asked to send proof of identity/proof of address, this may be a sign that your credit application has been flagged as needing more checks. The creditor could have been alerted to possible fraud concerns by running your applications through one of the fraud databases.

(NB I’m talking about something unusual here – if you apply to open a bank account or a savings account, you normally have to provide proof of identity/address. This isn’t fraud prevention – although it does help with that – it is part of the standard money-laundering checks banks have to make.)

If this happens once it’s probably no big deal – after all you do want lenders to make checks otherwise there will be a lot more identity theft than there is at the moment. But if you find it’s happening a lot, you might decide to find what is on the fraud databases that could be causing this – see below for how to do this.

2) You can’t imagine why you have been rejected for credit

If you are turned down when you apply for a loan, credit card or anything that requires a credit check, you need to think why. There are many possibilities and although having a problem entry on a fraud database is one, it is pretty unlikely.

Check out all these more common reasons first:

  • debt problems such as CCJs, defaults, late payments on your records with the three Credit Reference Agencies (CRAs). You have to check all three of them, here’s how;
  • check the personal information on your CRA records is correct: names, address, old addresses, on the electoral roll;
  • credit score problems with anyone you are linked to financially? Try to de-link from anyone you no longer live with or who has a poor record;
  • borrowing too much for your income. This is a common reason for being refused a large consolidation loan even if your credit scores are good;
  • too many recent credit applications? Don’t make any more for a few months!
  • little or no credit history? It can be hard to get anyone to accept you at first.  Try a low-vaue monthly mobile contract. If they don’t accept you, consider a “bad credit” credit card – but these can be traps for the unwary.
  • previous history with the lender. If you had debt problems a long while ago, that lender may still have the records even if they are no longer on your credit file.

But if your credit record appears fine and there don’t appear to be any other reasons why you should be turned down then it is a good idea to check the fraud databases, see below.

3) You have been the victim of identity theft

Look out for anything unusual:

  • debts on your CRA reports that you don’t recognise;
  • getting letters/emails/phone calls from lenders or debt collectors about credit you didn’t ask for / accounts you don’t know you have / goods you didn’t order. Even if these say that you have been refused credit, follow up on this as the fraudster may try again and succeed;
  • payments from your bank account or credit cards that you don’t recognise;
  • regular monthly bank account or credit card statements do not arrive;
  • a debit or credit card expires and you haven’t been sent a replacement.

If you spot one identity theft problem, there may be others. You need to check all three CRA files for entries that you don’t recognise and it’s a good idea to check the fraud databases.

See Loans taken out in your name for details of one reader’s problem and my suggestions for tackling it.

How to check the fraud databases

National Hunter

National Hunter keeps records of credit applications to the 50 lenders who use its system.

Lenders check this when they receive a new application, looking for inconsistencies. The idea is that someone who is applying for credit in your name may not know your date of birth, middle name, marital status, income etc, so if a National Hunter check throws up something which doesn’t match, the application can be looked at in more detail.

Obviously this could generate flags where there isn’t a real problem – using a nickname, not a full name or if you have just received a large pay-rise. The aim is for the lender to make further enquiries, not automatically reject an application.

To check what information National Hunter has about you, make a Subject Access Request, which they will reply to within 40 days. Use the National Hunter SAR form and enclose the proof of identity required – this needs to be sent to National Hunter.

This information may show nothing interesting – all the applications look correct to you. Just because your application is on the database doesn’t mean that it is suspected of fraud.

But if there are applications that you didn’t make, this could be identity theft and you need to look into it further.

National Hunter retains information depending on how the lender flagged the information:

  • for 6 months – applications marked with an overall status of ‘Clear’, i.e. the lender has no concerns on the data provided within the application;
  • for 3 years – applications marked with an overall status of ‘Inconsistency’, i.e. the lender has identified a discrepancy;
  • for 6 years – application marked with an overall status of ‘Refer’, i.e. a National Hunter member checking this record can contact the member who added the info for more details.   The reason for the refer status is usually included.

Cifas

When a Cifas member identifies a fraud, a warning is placed on the Cifas database. This shows the name used in the fraudulent application.

Cifas says:

The National Fraud Database is simple and effective. All Cifas members record instances of actual and attempted fraud against their organisation to the National Fraud Database, enabling other members to search against their data.

When members match against data on the National Fraud Database and confirm an actual or attempted fraud, they file their own case.

If this is your name, it does NOT necessarily mean that you are suspected of fraud, it may be that someone else has used your name. So if you apply to another Cifas member, they will get a message saying Cifas – Do Not Reject – Validation Required. This could be why you are being asked to supply additional information when you apply for credit. By requiring extra proof of who you are, it is protecting you against further fraud.

To check if Cifas is holding any information with your name on it, you should make a Subject Access Request, using the Cifas SAR form and enclose your proof of identity. Send this to Cifas – they have to reply within a month but aim to reply within a week. There is no charge for this.

Cifas retains information relating to fraud for six years.

Victim of Impersonation data is retained for 13 months.

Sira

The National Sira Fraud Prevention database holds c 1,500,000 records. If you want to see if any information is held about you, complete the SIRA SAR form. and supply the relevant id information.

Preventing identity theft in future – Cifas “Protective Registration”

If you have had identity theft problems, or perhaps you are just worried that you could have if you know some personal information has been stolen, then to try to prevent them from happening in the future you can ask Cifas for Protective Registration:

When you request Protective Registration, we place a warning flag against your name and other personal details in our National Fraud Database. This tells any organisation that uses Cifas data to pay special attention when your details are used to apply for their products or services. Knowing you’re at risk, they’ll carry out extra checks to make sure it’s really you applying, and not a fraudster using your details.

This will make it harder for anyone to take out credit in your name. You won’t be refused credit because you have asked for Protective Registration,  but the process will be longer. You may have to provide additional information.

Protective Registration lasts for two years.

Correcting wrong information on the databases

Fraud databases record the information they are given by lenders and insurers. If you think the information is wrong. you first need to complain and ask the lender to correct it, not National Hunter or Cifas.

An example of this could be that a mortgage lender recorded “hidden buy to let” against your mortgage application on the National Hunter database. This could result in you being rejected for other mortgages.

If the lender refuses to correct information, you can complain to the ICO or take your complaint to the Financial Ombudsman. If the problem is with the Cifas database, you can also ask Cifas to look at the issue.

The Financial Ombudsman gave some examples of cases involving a Cifas in this newsletter.

I think people often feel sceptical that the ombudsman will help them or “just side with the bank”. Whether your complaint is upheld will depend on the details of the case, but here is one example where the Ombudsman made it clear that:

I also need to consider whether the report to CIFAS was made fairly. On this point, [the bank] needs to have more than a suspicion or concern. It has to show it had reasonable grounds to believe that a fraud or financial crime had been committed or attempted and that the evidence would support this being reported to the authorities.

Banking when you have a fraud marker against your name

This can be very difficult.

If you know the entry on the database is a mistake, don’t panic and apply for a bank account to every bank you have ever heard of. That will probably just get you a pile of rejections.

You may need to find a way to live with the marker while the complaint goes through – and afterwards if your complaint is not upheld.

One option is to get help from a relative or your partner. Could your salary be paid into your mum’s bank account? Then she could pay the important bills from it by standing order and transfer the rest into a pre-paid debit card in your name.

You need to check out the costs for the different options here. If you think you have found a good one, I would love to hear about it – pop the details in the comments below.

A “Victim of Impersonation” marker is not a problem

Cifas says:

The warning is there to make it clear you are the genuine, innocent party, and that you have been (or suspect you may be) the victim of an identity theft.

Any organisation that subsequently receives that warning will see the phrase ‘Cifas – Do Not Reject – Validation Required’. It reminds them that extra precautions must be taken to ensure that the application or facility is genuine, protecting you from further fraud.

This does not harm your credit record or cause any problems with your banking.

The marker remains on your record for 13 months. You shouldn’t try to get this marker removed – it is there to protect you.

    Hi there,

I am in need of some advise. Few years ago I did something for which I am not very proud I ran into some financial crisis and it lead me to huge amount of credit card as well over draft debt with banks. The situation became so bad for me that every bank that I had account with start closing down my accounts because of that I went into depression and to be honest it was my fault. Currently I have 2 CCJ and I had three markers on CIFAS. The positive news is that those three markers were removed last month. But I still has those two CCJs against my name. My question is I know I messed up and I am not very proud of it but after my markers removed if I apply in same banks for just basic account will I be granted an account or not ? I currently have 1 online account and I always worry that they will close that as well. Please if you can just give me some advise I will much appreciate it.

One CCJ will go in 2023 and the other 2024, I had account with Monzo it was fine for 1 year but they closed without any reason. Now I have an account with Revolt but after Monzo experience I am in panic mode.

          Hi Saleem,

There are other companies like thinkmoney.co.uk where you can open a account. They do charge a monthly fee. Please read their T&C before applying. have a read and decide.

Banks will have their own internal records they check when you make an application.
I suggest it will be easier if you only apply to banks who have not either closed accounts because of your CIFAS markers or rejected you for an account because of this.

    Hi Saleem,

Once they are removed you can try, but i would suggest avoid the bank who have put the markers or contact debt agencies who then got you CCJ. Try banks who you never banked with once your credit file is all cleared.

I suggest you talk to your local Citizens Advice and ask them to help you make a complaint to your bank about this.
Also check the fraud databases as the article above suggests so you know what needs to be cleared.

    Hi Sara,

Thanks for suggesting to contact National Debtline althgouth I am not sure what I should ask them. From your reply I get the impression that having CIFAS and National Hunter marker for being a victim of ID impersonation should ideally not be a reason to decline credit.

    I have a question please,

I recently had a cifas marker removed and was lucky enough to get my first credit builder credit card to help with improving my score I currently have a 546 score rating with Experian and two settled defaults and one CCJ which will be paid off by September would my chances of getting a PCP finance at a good rate next year June be likely or would I just have to accept that I would have to pay High apr rates for car finance. I’m hoping with the credit card utilisation and everything else that’s positive on my credit report I will be okay?

I think you need to wait and see what your credit record looks like next summer.
With your new credit builder card, make sure you use it every month but for things which come to less than 1/3 of the credit limit and that you always pay it off in full each month – that gives the maximum boost to your credit score.

Why do you think the marker is wrong?

You need to put in a complaint to the lender that added the CIFAS marker saying why it is unfair. No point in paying a solicitor – you are the only person who knows what happened, you don’t need to quote laws or go to court. Just send in a complaint and send it to the Financial Ombudsman if that is rejected.

Hi my account was used as fraud to deposit money. I had lost my cards and As the account was one I never used and only had pence in I stupidly and niavely didn’t bother to report it. Because of this the bank assumed I was responsible. I only found this out now from a year ago as I have had accounts closed when I tried to open a savings account. I went into bank to talk to them but they were not interested and just said it will remain you failed to contact us. At the time my parents separated and we moved and for a while did not receive post and only ever got 1 letter. I admit stupidly I only thought money would be taken out but in actual fact money was put in. Waiting for Cifas but worried about my future re bank account as I can’t get one and if I wish to get a mortgage in the future

    Hello,

I must commend you guys for sharing your experiences and helping others.

I would like to seek help about my situation too.

My High street bank recently contacted me that they will be closing my account. I wondered why, and I was told it’s due to a CIFAS marker on my name (I never knew about CIFAS until now).

I then contacted CIFAS and I was sent a report. Apparently I was reported by MONZO for “Misuse of facility”.

Being new to the UK, I never even had a Monzo account until a friend asked me to open a Monzo account because his account is suspended and he needed to get some money from his brother.

When the money dropped in my account he asked me to send some out to another account. Immediately I sent it out, the account got blocked. With some money still left in the account. I was asked to provide another account to get the balance left but because I knew something was not right I did not provide any other account.

I didn’t pay attention to the account closure because I didn’t really need or use the Monzo account. Only to realise now that the transaction will affect my name.

I am currently unable to open any bank account and I honestly do not know how to get the marker off my record.

I’d appreciate any advice I can get as regards my case.

    Regards.

    Hi Guys,

Just need some advise and help. I had couple of CIFAS against my name did something stupid couple of years ago. They got removed in march this year I got them double checked with CIFAS as I don’t have any. I checked hunter database there I don’t have anything again my name. The issue is that I applied for a basic Cashminder cooperate bank account which is for people with poor credit history. I the start my application got accepted I didn’t received any documentation so I gave them a ring and been told that my application has been rejected and they have sent out a letter which will gives me the reason. I told the guy that is it because I have ccj in my name he said this has nothing to do with you credit profile. so I wonder what it could be ? I know I have to wait for the letter but let’s can I fight the case for an account opening ? Do I have a chance since all markers have been removed from name? I know it is my mistake that I let this happen it first place but overall I am really stress about it. any feedback will be much appreciated

Hi. Having got my credit score up to 999 on Experian and near the top on Credit Karma I applied for a personal loan with Tesco. It has taken 4 phone calls and an over the phone “interview” to eventually find out that it has been declined! It appears they have been unable to verify my ID!!!! I have lived in the same house for 14 years, banked with bank for over 15 years and have no evidence of CIFAS on my credit file. I am going to fill forms in for National Hunter and CIFAS but am totally confused as to where the problem lies.
Are we saying that we really should be filling in these forms to these companies every few months to check things out?

I did not know it was overdrawn u till they told me on the phone when I called of this cifas I left this accout dormant for years as it was giving me goo credit reports history and was trying to re build credit.i had no statements nothing just two letters from 2019. So my question are why would they do it now after 3 4 years when it’s not been used other then what they have now said one time where I had my own funds on it and it went a bit over apprarly. But how can they give a cifas for a unplanned overdraft and not tell you off this also will a cifas effect anyone else in my house hold if I have one

          I can’t answer these questions.

I suggest you ask HSBC why they have done this, say you never received letterrs from them and ask for a statement of the account. That will show you what exactly happened and leave you in a good position to make a complaint.

I think you should also ask cifas what information they hold about you – the article above explains how to do this.

A Cifas marker will not affect anyone else in your house unless they have any joint accounts with you.

This is why I said you have to find out what has happened. Have you had a statement of the account from HSBC as at the moment you do not know why it is overdrawn.
And do you know why this other firm added a cifas marker?

HSBC would have closed the account because of the CIFAS marker being added by the other firm.

The marker won’t harm anyone else but it will make it very difficult or impossible for you to get credit or open another bank account.

If you feel the marker is unfair, I suggest you complain to the firm about it and ask for it to be removed.

During my MSc days in London in 2018, I lived in a flat share so basically we had no privacy as our room doors had no locks on them. I returned to Ghana after my Master degree in November 2018, and in April 2019, TSB investigation team called me to enquire if I was expecting any money, which I declined. They further questioned me about my bank account and asked me to log into my online bank and check my balance. Fortunately, they informed me that a fraudulent amount was paid into my account which they froze and prevented it from reflecting. Sadly, I re-entered the UK in December 2021, and I have tried opening a bank account with 2 different banks, but I have been refused by both banks. I am so confused right now as I have not been able to get a job. I am thinking of forfeiting my PHD studies and return back to my country. What can I do to solve this problem. I am really stressed.

Checking the fraud databases as the article above suggests sounds like a good first step. Then if you feel TSB have unfairly added some marker, you can complain and ask them to remove this.

    Hi there.

My partner submitted a DSAR to CIFAS yesterday as we’re planning on applying for a mortgage soon and he wanted to check first. Since then he hasn’t been able to log in to some of his finances online including Marbles. He can access his current account with Lloyds Bank but now cannot see any of his credit card information which he did have access to yesterday.
Does CIFAS notify these companies when you make a DSAR? He’s really worried that his current account will be terminated.

I have been under investigation by nationwide for a suspicious deposit of 170. This happened because I sent someone my details over telegram only my sort code and account number as he told me I won a prize i didn’t receive the prize however I didn’t think much of it because my account number and sort code couldn’t be used for much. However someone had sent me 170 and got my account blocked because the money was either from fraud or scammed from someone who pressed a charge back on my account. Later on someone contacted me trying to be the solution for 1,000 and he said that he could get rid of the Cifas marker for me so I screen shotted and sent evidence to the bank. From what I have gathered someone maliciously transferd me to me or scammed someone and sent the money to either way it has resulted in this investigation. I haven’t eaten or slept in days I’m very depressed I’m only 17 someone please help me get my account back any advice would mean the absolute world to me thank you.

how long has the investigation been going on? I would hope they find in your favour especially because of your age – if they don’t you can complain to the Financial Ombudsman.

You need to start being very careful in future – only giving details to people you know and not trusting anything that sounds too good to be true. I am afraid that includes leaving your email address anywhere it is visible on the web – I have deleted your email from your comment as having it published would result in you getting deluged by spam and other potential frausters.

I just can’t take it it anymore, I made a stupid mistake and to think my future aspirations could be delayed by 6 years i feel so helpless. Has anyone on here got success stories of removing Cifas markers any guides or anything would mean so much being 17 and not having financially capable or literate parents puts me in a impossible position.

if you look back through the comments, some people have been able to get a Cifas marker removed.
All these cases are VERY individual. If other people have failed or succeeded, that has little bearing on your case.
This has only been going on for a short time and I am afraid there is nothing more you can do at the moment. Can you come back and say what happenes?

Thank you so much for your reply, the situation is making me so anxious. Currently they are still investigating and I have read other stories online similar to me and it doesn’t look like I have good odds. I have completely learned from my mistake and will never do anything like it again but having 6 year ban seems so excessive especially in such a crucial time in my life where I need a bank the most for university. If they concluded and close my account and put a Cifas marker on me what do you recommend is my first step I’m very anxious, never felt this low in my life and really need some guidance. My parents do not have financial literacy and I feel as though if I told them this would only make matters worse. I have no body to talk to, this whole situation is awful. Thank you for your reply it means a lot what your doing is amazing. Any advice would mean the world to me.

    Hi Sara,
A bit off subject, but wondered if you could help, please. On 12th July, I noticed that Argos Finance had performed a hard credit search, on my credit report. I noted it was at an address I hadn’t lived at for over 5 years. When I contacted them, via email, I received no acknowledgment. When I contacted them a second time, via email again, they sent a written acknowledgment, promising a further update on 17/08. However, this never mateirilised. After doing lots of chasing, and sending lots of ignored emails (some which they sent to me, and I responded) they sent a FR letter, yesterday. They state that they can’t fully uphold the complaint, as the initial complaint didn’t meet their criteria for it to be classed as a ‘complaint’, even though the subject line, in the email, was COMPLAINT. I have no idea how they’ve come to this conclusion? There’s lots of innacuracies, in their response, but they have put a CIFAS marker, on my credit report, said the hard search will be removed within 28 days and have offered £30 D&I payment. My partner, who worked in financial services himself, says this is woefully inadequate, based on how badly they have investigated all of this and reaching the conclusion that they have. Whilst I haven’t suffered any monetary loss, it has impacted my credit record, as it’s for a sub-prime store card. What would you suggest please?

Thanks Sara, apparently it’s for my own protection, according to the Argos FR letter, as I have been a victim of impersonation? I’ve never held an Argos account (and looking at their APR, I never would want one!). After googling this, it appears it won’t affect my credit record? However, it still doesn’t justify how badly they’ve handled this whole complaint.

6 weeks to respond to your complaint and add the Cifas marker doesn’t seem to me to be unreasonable.

But they certainly could have kept you better informed. Saying your complaint didn’t meet their reasons for a complaint is ridiculous.

You could reply that you are happy they have reached the correct conclusion in the end by you feel their communications (and lack of them) have been very poor (go into details) and this has caused you a lot of stress. Say you think £30 is inadequate compensation.

When it was time for him to an amount he said he had to change the money from naira to pounds from Nigeria into his account before he sends it but the guy who was doing this process happened to have monzo account but he didn’t , so he asked me if I could give him my monzo account so the guy could send the money. The guy sent me £1000 and I transferred £800 into my Barclays account remaining £200 in the monzo account. All of a sudden monzo blocked my account and they didn’t give me the £200 back saying it’s under an investigation I called them to ask why the account has been blocked but they said they couldn’t tell me the reason . recently Barclays has also blocked my account. I called them and they said I’ll get a letter about the reason I still haven’t received it yet, I’ve been saving ISA with Barclays for a while with my wages as I work part time and I really scared they might not give me my money . Just yesterday Halifax which I use as a student account has also been blocked. When I called Halifax the guy told me a bank has registered fraud against me I don’t even know which bank I’m really stressed and frustrated about all this I’m in my final year and I really need the student finance funds to pay my rent and other thing. Can I withdraw my savings and student finance money ? I really need help please what should I do

    Hi.
I recently applied for a credit card. I stupidly put the wrong date of birth in and when the credit card arrived and I tried to register it wouldn’t let me pass security as I had put in the wrong date of birth. I went into branch and explained what happened and they closed down the credit card. They did write to me the next day, which obviously crossed in the post, that I needed to come in with id, payslips and 3 months bank statements. I just called this morning and explained again that my date of birth was wrong and he said he has been issued to the fraud prevention team. I am so worried about this now. I feel sick, I haven’t eaten in about 4 days I really don’t want this to go on my credit file. I can’t believe I have been so stupid. What happens now? Everything is closed down, I didnt owe anything on the credit card.

So you don’t know what date of birth you put in but it can’t be right as you can’t pass security? And you told them straight away? This doesn’t sound like fraud to me and it shouldn’t to the lender if they think about it for 20 seconds…
I suggest going into the branch again if this doesn’t get resolved. And if necessary put in a complaint.

It wouldn’t accept the date of birth I was entering when I called up, then just went straight through to fraud. They told me I had to go into branch with id, bank statements etc. I was happy to provide but I just wanted it shut down as it seemed all very strange. The card
Was blocked straight away after I had set up online banking. How did this even go though? This is causing me so much stress. I had read up about application fraud and cifas. I’m guessing this is what’s going to go against me now it’s still with fraud prevention as I shut the account down on the 31st and I still have an alert on their system.

What happens to existing credit like loans and credit cards when you’ve had a cifas marker placed on you? Do they close down your accounts? Or do they only know you have this unless you apply for credit?

That depends on the bank and the type of debt. As a rough guide, if you have a loan or a mortgage, they just continue. If you have a credit card or an overdraft, the lender may close the account – but they depends on them noticing, which depends on their systems.

    Hi
I have been keeping an eye on my NH, SS and CIFAS database the last 3-5 years since realising an entry was on there.
There were 3 inconsistency markers on NH (time lapsed now) & 2 REFER markers from SS.

I have just checked all 3 again this year, and can see that the following have been added…..

    Refer on SS – Nationwide – 31/03/2022
Refer on SS – Nationwide 01/04/2022
Inconsistency on NH – Tesco Loan 04/03/2022
Inconsistency on NH – Tesco Credit Card 21/09/2022

The 2 inconsistencies on Tesco are for “Conflicting details – Other” and then “unrealistic level of apps from same address”
The Nationwide Refer markers on SS give no reasons.
Not only is all the information correct on the markers, I seem to be subject to getting these markets often, which I have no idea why.
I am wondering if its because I am a mortgage broker and on SS for example, every application I do for a client with Nationwide I come up the report but instead of “applicant” it shows “introducer” or “broker”

Are these “inconsistency” and “refer” markers actually an issue? As I managed to remortgage to NatWest, open a HSBC advance account and also take out a new credit card with NatWest, all in the last 6 months? So I am wondering although there are refer and inconsistency markers, do the severity of these markers effect people differently?

Although info correct, I don’t want to speak to the lenders about this given the job I do.

    Hello,
Being new to the UK, my friend was offered online job, asked for online bank account and he didn’t have online bank account and I had my monzo account, gave him to receive salary.

When the money 250 dropped in my account he asked me to 230 send some out to another account. Immediately I sent it out, the account got blocked. With some money still left in the account. I sent to his lloyds account.
I didn’t pay attention to the account closure because I didn’t really need or use the Monzo account. Only to realise now that the transaction will affect my name.

I am currently unable to open any bank account and I honestly do not know how to get the marker off my record.

I’d appreciate any advice I can get as regards my case.

    Regards.

    Hello,

I obtained a Cifas marker back in 2020. An old colleague suggested I help him out with bitcoin and in return I would be able to make some money, I was in university at the time. I stupidly gave him my bank details, he would send over money and I would send this into Bitcoin. I now know that this was not how bitcoin investing is suppose to work and there was clearly something suspicious going on. After telling this friend I no longer wanted part of this, my bank account was flagged for fraud 1 week later. I have been back and for disputing this with the banks and Cifas to get the marker removed. It is now 3 years on and the marker still remains, and the investigation is still ongoing. I cannot obtain credit or get a bank account with any mainstream banks, this has made it very difficult for me as I have relied on family members and friends just so I can continue so live somewhat normally. Are you able to give me any advise on what I should do moving forwards?

I understand that Cifas is an organisation for fraud alerts in the UK, but I would like to also know if I would find any difficulties opening bank accounts in different countries as I have dual nationality, and I am also planning to go abroad for a working holiday visa in Australia and need to know if this will impact me, I am Genuinely unsure if this would be a problem elsewhere. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Many thanks,
    Jane Doe

If you have Made a complaint to the bank that added the CIFAS marker and you disagree with their decision – or they have no made a decision after 8 weeks you can send the case to the Ombudsman. I don’t know what the Ombudsmans decision is likely to be.

I’m sorry I don’t know if a CIFAS marker will make it harder to open an account in other countries.

Hi, Is there anyway of removing my name off the Cifas database as the normal public don’t have so much looked into their applications. I was a victim of identity theft in 2018 and I reported it. Now I apply for a product and it will indicate that my details have been used in the past as a victim of identity fraud. The fact is I want my name details removed from getting further checks. I have managed to get the markers removed but in the future I know another marker will appear as there is a flag popping up on Cifas under my name and details.

Hi Sara, After 6 years how do I stop leaders from looking deep into my application as Cifas will still flag up that you need to have a deeper look. Will NatWest the leader whom has given this marker erase all details of that I had a marker with them in the past. A lot of my application are failed and the organisation do not bother getting in contact with me to confirm it’s myself who’s made the application. They just add on a marker without notifying as well as even if I do get the product then I have to wait longer as they are doing further checks

Hi Sara, Yes, I am not in any debt and for the past 6 years my credit score has been 900+ this marker is the issue but regardless I don’t want any protection. I am now wondering if it’s due to the protective registration and the notice of correction on my Experian that these further checks are being carried out. I personally don’t have any checks carried out but there is a “ Red flag” that appears somewhere when I apply for a product. This red flag is the issue as it indicates that “ victim of identity fraud” or “protection registration” and even “ victim of impersonation”.

The thing is I think is that soon as I put in a application for a product the lenders see my credit file and then notice “ I have been a victim of identity fraud in 2018” this is why they do further checks and without informing add a marker to CIFAS. I use to have “ CIFAS Protection Registration” which also indicates that to do further checks. CIFAS has informed me that there is “ victim of impersonation” and the 3 markers that have been added on is called “ false identity marker”

It is my own email and number but they are saying the fraudsters used these details. I have not changed my number or email as unsure if I do then the lenders will think these are not “his” detail’s. Also on the other hand the lenders are saying “alert” due to having the same number and email the fraudsters used which is my email, do you suggest that I change my number and email? What if the lenders see new info and then think it’s the fraudster.

In that case you need to send a complaint to each of them. ALso check the National Hunter database and complain if anything wrong there.

Take these complaints to the ombudsman if the lenders reject them.

And stop applying for any credit until this is sorted!

    Hi Sara,

One of my debts has been sold on, the original lender went in to administration a couple of years ago. At the time of taking the borrowing I was desperate and was less than honest on my application, something I am not proud of but at the time I was struggling with addiction. I recently spoke with the DCA the loan was sold to and I let slip that I wasn’t honest when I originally took the loan out. I am now really worried that I will end up with a fraud marker, I checked the CIFAS website and the DCA is not listed as a member (I didn’t see any DCAs on there). Do you think the buyer of the debt (the DCA) are able to register a fraud marker or would that have to have been completed by the original (now defuncted) lender?

I’ve already been down the CCA and affordability route.

I’m just terrified now that the DCA that bought my debt will register a fraud marker. I took the debt out in 2019 so I think it’d be unfair to load it all these years later.

Bankruptcy doesn’t appear on CIFAs or National Hunter.

Santander can keep internal records for as long as it wants.

You haven’t been a victim of impersonation, that is used when someone else has pretended to be you eg they have taken out a loan using your name.

You will have to ask your local credit union about an account and explain what happened – this will be a an individual decision – credit Unions are in general less inclined to automatically decline an application with a Cifas marker but that doesnt mean your local credit union will give you an account.

But you could consider complaining about the Cifas marker to Lloyds (email them at onlinecomplaints@lloydsbank.co.uk), and take your complaint to the Financial Ombudsman if Lloyds refuse to remove the marker.

      Cifas says:

      – There must be reasonable grounds to believe that an identified fraud or financial
      crime has been committed or attempted;
      – The evidence must be clear, relevant and rigorous such that the member could
confidently report the conduct of the subject to the police.

I don’t know what evidence Lloyds has.

Me and my husband had an join mortgage application with nationwide and it was rejected. The reason i have been told from my broker that my husband’s job was unsustainable. Then he applied to Accord and it leads us to a Marker on National Hunter. As it was joint application so both of ours details has been reported to NH. The status was inconsistency and it is going to end on November 2024. Thère was nothing on Sifas.
My question is can I apply for mortgage after November 2024? Is Lenders will make any issues due to my previous markers?
I went to a advisor last week. He said Bank will see all the details and it is quite impossible to get a mortgage for use.

A few days after receiving the marker, I was able to open an account with London Community Credit Union. However, after approximately one year , they ceased trading.

Given this, my question is: Would I be able to open an account with Yorkshire Building Society, or would doing so potentially trigger CIFAS to close my existing accounts? At the moment, I only have accounts with Monzo and Revolu

well you have Revolut as a back up. I can’t say whether you will be able to open an account with YBS. In this sort of situation is it often best to wait until the Cifas marker disappears – the more banks you apply to at the moment, the more that will have a record of the application and a rejection for the cifas marer on their records.

What does reasonable mean over here ? It should be there for 3 years. But i don’t know what will happen after that. Am i will be able to get mortgage after this period? They give the reason same for both of us-‘ conflict of work’.
Deposit was £42K which was around in between of 10 to 15%. Unfortunately our advisor never gave us a copy of our application. Yes it was our first mortgage.

“reasonable” means do you think the marker was fair eg did your husband say he had a different kind of you for the second application because whatever he wrote on the first got a rejection. Ask the adviser for a copy of the application.

I don’t see why you shouldnt be able to get a mortgage after the NH marker drops off, but of course in the last 3 years mortgage rates have gone up so it may be harder to pass an affordability test

Hi, hope someone can throw some light on this please as I am stressed out –

I have more than 15 years credit history in the UK, Credit Karma score is 690 and Experian score is 999, Equifax score is 904, never missed any mortgage or any payment so far, living in the same address for 10 years, employed with a good salary etc. Nothing negative in my credit reports.

I applied for a Credit card last week, it was initially accepted (all online) and I got a confirmation email, with the credit limit stated, and they said the credit card & PIN will reach me in 7 days etc.

But couple of days later, I got an email from fraud prevention team saying that they are unable to open an account for me, and they cannot tell me why!!!

I then contacted the bank, they say that their fraud prevention team made the decision, they are unable to tell me anything further and said this is their final decision, and I can approach the Ombudsman if I am not happy!

I only learnt about CIFAS last week, I applied for a report, no markers in my name! What is this mystery? Should I also check with National Hunters and Sira (never heard of them until today)?

I am really confused what to do now? Please help!!

I don’t know how fast it is updated. You are guessing that the bank decided this was fraud and has reported it – it is equally possible that these was a decline because the bank saw something on NH and that caused the decline.

So this is good because you know there is nothing unexpected on any of the fraud databases that you would need to get corrected.

It is unlikely you will get a satisfactory explanation for this by going to the Ombudsman, you can try if you want, but you could just sghrug and move on with your life.

Hi Sara, I want to know which an example to what I want to find out will be written: Does everyone’s application for credit go through National Hunter. My point I am trying to work out why have I got
“for 3 years – applications marked with an overall status of ‘Inconsistency’, i.e. the lender has identified a discrepancy;”
So let’s say John Smith applies for a credit card will he be taken to National Hunter for credit checks and what if John Smith changed his address or job or salary went up or if he rounded the figure he earns. Would this go against him as inconsistent? Or are the people who have a Cifas marker or flag on their name made to have their credit applications taken to National Hunter?

Where as if I even give a new mobile number I get rejected. So my question is what is being shared and who is sharing this information with NHunter to scrutinise individuals with a cifas marker. Is Cifas sharing this red flag?
What I am trying to understand is my wife been taken via NHunter but why is she allowed to get ignored “inconsistency” and why am left to be rejected.
You say NHunter pulls up a flag Simon but what is this flag and how do I stop them from pulling up this flag. Far as I know my marker is with Cifas and not NHunter.

Hi Sara, It’s a 6 years marker which nationwide had put on my file. Then I had it removed but Virgin has still left the 6 year old marker on. The fact is Cifas put a victim of impersonation marker on my name. Soon as they see that mbna see a red flag and mbna then does the checks I’m assuming of why I changed my phone number or my email is different. Thats when mbna start to add on 13months marker. We should who has been a victim of fraud and wrongly had Cifas put in our name be given compensation.
Back to my question does John Smith with out no Cifas markers etc have his mbna applications dragged through National hunters database to check if he’s put a different phone number and if he has this is left alone and he is allowed to get his mbna card. Why and who asks mbna to go through National Hunter to check is this persons details is inconsistent.
I do understand we all have it done Simon but why is nothing being done in regards to people who charge their number each year and they can carry on getting a mbna credit card.

What does the Virgin CIFAS marker say?

It is up to a lender what checks they make.
If you don’t think the National Hunter marker is fair, as MBNA to remove it and send it to the ombudsman if MBNA refuse.

The Virgin is a 6 years marker which I didn’t bother to challenge as challenging the nationwide caused me mental health issues but got the fraud marker removed but due to the victim of impersonation and protective registration all the companies go to see if my details are the same but I want to change my number and is I do them I get a marker” fraudster is using his details” put a marker. All I was asking is it normal for Nh to do checks as a thread from George Day 06/06/2023 on here starts he has all these inconsistent markers by NH but has been able to get card loan overdraft all in the space of 6 months

Is this virgin marker showing you are the victim or fraud or are thought to have committed fraud?

I am going to get all 3 SAR and take it from there. This has been going on for years now since 2018. I should be passed the 6 years right Sara? How do I make sure they now I have done my 6 years don’t share this fraud details. No I was a victim of fraud.m so nationwide removed the market but Virgin should have HAVE removed the marker too but I didn’t bother asking them. Regardless I can say that they owe me as for past 6 years they Virgin have left a marker under my name when I can prove that I am a victim as Nationwide has said I am a victim and that’s why nationwide removed the marker

Sara, Everytime I apply for a credit card it says approved and then in a few days I who every it might “Capitol One or MBNA” be sends me a letter sorry someone is doing fraud in your name. We rejected your application as we think someone had impersonated you. This is not fair for me as I’m getting rejected application like they are doing me a favour. “ victim of impersonation” from Cifas is what is the caused but this not up to Cifas to share this information with lenders and this is a breach of data in my eyes.

Hi Sara, Yes this was in 2018 a fraud marker due to false documentation. As well as nationwide had put the same 6 year fraud marker but in 2020 after fighting my right with Nationwide for to 2 years. I got the 6 year fraud marker removed from nationwide but Virgin remained. Then Cifas put a VIM on my file. The Virgin your right to say why didn’t you get that removed but due to the mental health it’s caused me. I had no more strength to approach Virgin. They on the Cifas have put 3 “False identity marker” << what does that actually mean Sara??

I am sorry but all the others lenders are correctly turning you down. You should have challenged Virgin like you did Nationwide.

I will have to look at my old SAR for all 3 fraud agencies as Virgin is no longer showing and only god knows which others have been on there and now passed and expired.
Maybe I will have to email Cifas to ask them to provide the SAR for the past 6 years

What matters is what shows now. Not what there has been in the past

I think you need help to deal with this , go to your local Citizens Advice

Hi Sara, can anyone tell me where is this “victim of impersonation” recorded as I want to get it removed.
Cifas has said the lenders see “do not reject validation required” where is this information located?

It is recorded by a lender on CIFAS (or you can register yourself for protective registration, which I assume you haven’t done.)
To find out which lender, send CIFAS a subject access request as the article above says. Then you can ask the lender to remove it if you want.
