A first payment of 4.31p in the £ was paid in May/June 2021.
A second, much smaller payment of 0.65p in the £ is being paid on 14 or 18 January 2022.
If you do not receive this second payment, see below for what to do.

Background to the Scheme
This “Scheme of Arrangement” covers borrowers from the ICL brand names, Money Shop, Payday UK and Payday Express, who were given unaffordable loans.
ICL had two million customers, with three big payday lending brands:
- The Money Shop was once Britain’s largest payday lender on the high street. The Money Shop stopped making payday loans in August last year.
- Payday UK and Payday Express were two large online lenders. These both stopped making new loans in October 2017.
In summer 2018, the number of affordability complaints about payday loans increased significantly. Paying refunds on these complaints forced Wonga and Wageday Advance to go under.
In the last half of 2018, ICL received 45,000 complaints. So ICL wqs facing escalating costs and it was closing shops. Now the business is being closed completely because of the cost of these complaints.
A Scheme of Arrangement is a legal device which limits a company’s liability to its creditors. See What is a Scheme? for more details. ICL is using this to limit the amount it has to pay out in refunds on unaffordable lending.
The Scheme was approved by creditors in September and by the Court on 8 October 2019.
4.3% paid in May & June 2021
A claims page was published and all Claims had to be in by April 9 2020.
The Money Shop home page said:
- We have calculated the final dividend amount and you will be receiving 4.31p per £1.
- Where you provided us your bank details we will commence making payments from 24 May 2021.
These payments were made by BACS. People will be paid in batches, once or twice each week through to the end of June:
- We are unable to let you know the exact date of your payment.
- You will receive an email before we make your payment with your calculation and cash payment amount.
- If you did not provide us with bank account details, we have sent you a cheque.
The following details come from the March 2021 Scheme report:
- 182,566 Claims were received;
- the uphold rate was about 85%;
- the total compensation people should have got was c. £340 million – now people will only get a tiny amount of that back;
- it is now too late to submit a Claim.
No tax is deducted from the amount paid so there is nothing to reclaim.
Second, smaller payment to be paid in January 2022
After the first payment ICL was still receiving some money eg from a VAT recovery claim. This is being distributed to customers who had complaints upheld in the Scheme.
This will be 0.65p in the £. That is 0.0065% of the total redress that was calculated in your case.
This second payment will be much smaller than the first. If you got £100 on May 2021, you will get about £15 extra now in January 2022.
Customers were told by email about this on 12 January. The payments will be made on the 14 and 18 of January – your email says which date you should be paid.
Only bank transfers are being made – cheques will not be sent for this.
This second payment will be the final distribution. ICL will be liquidated – the company will no longer exist.
Was your ICL debt sold to PRAC/BW Legal?
Where you still owe ICL a balance on the last loan, this has been “set off” against your refund.
An example:
- you should have had a refund of £2500 and you still owed £1000
- then your balance is cleared, leaving you now being owed a refund of £1500
- you then get 4.3% of the £1500
If your last loan was sold to a debt collector, in most cases ICL has arranged for you to still have this set off.
The exception is if your loan was sold to PRAC/BW Legal. Here you have been left owing the debt to PRAC/BW Legal and were only paid 4.3% on the redress ICL calculated.
PRAC/BW Legal is offering to reduce some customers’ balances, but see No set off in a Scheme/Administration when debt had been sold? for how you can complain and ask them to write off your whole balance.
5% in all – that is a very poor outcome for customers
When the Scheme was proposed in August 2019, it was suggested people might get back nearly 80p in the pound.
My first thought when I saw the 80p in the £ estimate was “and pigs might fly“… see Will the Money Shop really pay 80% of your payday loan refund?
And that has turned out to be spot on…
In September it admitted that:
- it has decided to include all loans over 6 years which may reduce this to c. 44p.
- it has decided to simplify the assessment in favour of the customers, which may further reduce this to 27p.
- if twice as many people apply for a refund, this may go down to 14p.
By February 2020 in the previous quarterly report, the scheme administrators were warning this could be less than 10p.
So about 5% (4.3p + 0.65p) is a dismal outcome for customers.
Why won’t the FSCS help these customers?
The Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS) covered people making PPI claims if their firm had gone bust.
But the FSCS doesn’t cover payday loans. This was a very poor decision by the FCA.
Customers of the Money Shop, Payday UK and Payday Express have been let down badly by the UK regulators. The lenders were allowed to carry on giving loans that breached the affordability rules for years. And now there is no backup compensation scheme for when a lender goes under.

Has anyone had issues with the redress amount being wrong?
I recall the first emails I had saying i was due £1600. Then emails saying i still owed £250.
But the final calculation email says im due £855ish then taking off the £250 leaving 600 is and redress of £25.
I cant find the original email with the full amounts anywhere.

Just wondering those who have received emails and payments did anyone have any dealings with credit resource solutions? Just as the scheme was being set up I received 2 emails from them which I kicked back explaining I had put affordability complaints into the scheme which they noted on their system, just wondering if this is why I haven’t heard anything as yet? This is a complete joke been on going since 2019 !!! Madding thing is I contact these before the scheme to be told I didn’t have a case then when scheme approved each and every loan I had with them was taken into account!! Furious just want it over with now!
Danny says
Getting to a point where I don’t even want the money now. Looking for the email everyday. More mental anguish than it’s worth. I live paycheck to paycheck and this has dragged on far to long
Helen says
I feel exactly the same Danny. It makes no sense that emails have been dribs amd drabs and I feel like I am going to be the last one to get my email.
Its mental torture when you need the money.
Richard Eastland says
I still want was is rightfully mine ,but I agree the whole process has been a real shambles from start to finish huge conglomerates are able to pay their workforce on time in one foul swoop so why ,when that have had so long to sort this out can’t they.

CJ says
Hi Sara
Can you tell me if I am able to claim the tax back from a money shop refund from the scheme? Of my potential redress? This was going to be over £13,000. Thanks.
Cj says
Sorry that was potential redress of over 13,000
Sara (Debt Camel) says
No. the tax number given in the potential redress calculation was just a “potential” number for the purpose of dividing up the money available.
No tax has been paid on any part of the money you have received so there is no tax to be reclaimed.
Karen says
I had my email this morning 117 few pence so hang in there it’s on its way x

Hi Sara can you help again I put in affordability claim to piggybank the sent me a offer of £2003 in full and final settlement. Ask for bank details done this sent it and reply was piggybank went into liquidation in dec 2019 so after everything is paid to everyone unsecured creditors (me) if any money left I may get proportion of what I am owed. But can’t give dates. Is the right.
Sara (Debt Camel) says
I am sorry but it probably does sound right.

I got a letter of acknowledgment from BW Legal today in regards to the email I sent about the loan sold to them being accepted as unaffordable.
Anyone had any luck with this aspect yet?
Victoria says
Hello.
Iv been watching this site for a while now and it’s been very helpful. I received my email this morning, all as expected.
Could someone tell me….I sent an email to lending stream on 25/05/21. They replied stating they would be in touch shortly. I haven’t heard anything since.
I took out the loans with lending stream sometime between 2007 and 2012. I was living at a different address to the one I’m at now and I had a different bank account to the one I have now, I don’t even think I can remember which bank I was never mind the bank details. Am I wasting my time even trying an affordability claim?
Thanks, Victoria
Sara (Debt Camel) says
I can’t tell how well this one will turn out, but just carry on and respond to any questions from LS. If it works it could be quite a bit of money. I suggest you keep your expectations low but persist – don’t give up.
Victoria says
Brilliant thanks Sara. I’ll get back in touch with them. Take care
Jill says
Hi
I submitted to lending stream also, I have a different address and account number from when I took out the loans. I emailed a couple of weeks ago using their online form, I heard back today about my refund. There is then a link on the email that takes you to there site for you to add you info for a refund. It was already populated with my old account / address however was easy to change
Keep trying! Def worth it!
Victoria says
Hi Jill
Thanks for replying. Iv just sent them an email asking for an update. Iv told them my name, date of birth and previous address incase they’re able to find my loans that way. I had a different email address back then aswell so I could possibly give them my old one incase that also helps.
The link that you say is on the email…was it the email they sent you regarding your refund?
Thanks, Victoria
Jill says
Hey
Yes it was. Fingers crossed for you
Darren says
I also sent an email to lending dtream and had a reply saying they have no record of me having a loan, only of unsuccessful applications, even if Hough I know for certain I had loans with them even though they may have been more than 6 years ago. They asked for proof and I don’t have any ad I’ve had different bank accounts since then and don’t have any records. What’s the best thing to do???
Sara (Debt Camel) says
If LS say they have found rejected applications, then this isn’t because they have no record of you or because the loans are so old they have deleted them. I am afraid much the most likely explanation is that LS are right….
Unless you can find evidence fro old bank statements, emails, credit records or an old debt management plan that you did borrow from them there is probably nothing you can do. You can get bank statements from closed accounts going back 6 years, sometimes a bit longer, it’s up to you if you think it’s worth the effort of trying to get these.
Jane Y says
Hi All
Is anyone still waiting for Moneyshop and Quick Quid?
Kay says
A little bit concerned, I received an email 6 days ago saying my money would be in within 7 days. Fingers crossed it goes in tomorrow. I updated all my correct bank details on the portal so I’m hoping they’ve done it right. Bacs payments are usually three working days which is my reason for concern. Has anyone else’s taken the full seven days?
Ann says
My letter was dated 8th and still not received anything. Few others the same
Kay says
Okay, thanks Ann! That makes me feel slightly better :)
Doreen says
My letter was dated 8th received money in the bank today
Ann says
Yeah got mine to day too, letter was dated 8th
Mick says
Never used the Portal as always had trouble logging in.I did however get a redress figure from Moneyshop via email and gave them my bank details over the phone. Still nothing from them very very frustrating.I just hope that those people who did not use the Portal will get what’s owing to them
Kate says
Mick, the portal didn’t work for me either, and I did it all over the ‘phone: I got the email last week, and the payment today – about five working days later, I think.
J says
I got email saying I had to update my bank details which they had already, got email on 3rd June and still no update or money since this. Can we escalate this to anyone Sara? Fca? Etc…?
Sara (Debt Camel) says
You will have received that email because when they tried to pay you the payment bounced back from your bank. Have you now given them the details again?
Steffan says
Hello all. Thanks Sara for keeping this forum going a it has been a lifeline for info on when we will be paid.
I didn’t receive any email from them but the money was in my account today.
I received £284 which is a joke really but I am glad I got something back.
So, anyone waiting for payment, hang in there and check your account balance even if you didn’t get an email.
MARTIN says
Thanks Stefan that’s promising to hear..I am expecting about the same amount funnily enough lol

When the money is deposited into your account does it show as – instant Cash loan?
Kate says
Hi, Ashton,
Yes – mine came through today (email on the 10th) and that’s the identifier on the transaction.
Adam says
That’s going to take some explaining on my mortgage application.
Though haven’t heard anything from them yet.
Sara (Debt Camel) says
Some people worried about this with Wonga refunds – no-one ever said they had a problem in practice with a mortgage application.
Adam says
Brillant.
I was just worried if I had that and Elevate showing on my statement :)
Though worse case I would have the emails
Sara (Debt Camel) says
well no guarantees – but I haven’t heard of any problems with this.
Anna Marie Bailey says
I received my email Monday , finally I was a little concerned . Fingers crossed it will be in my bank Friday

Thanks so much for your help
Sara (Debt Camel) says
https://debtcamel.co.uk/payday-loan-refunds/
also consider canceling their access to your bank account so they can no longer help themselves.
Julie says
it may seem extreme but please like Sara says change your bank account as they will continue to withdraw money any time its available from your account
Sara (Debt Camel) says
I was actually suggesting that you cancel the Continuous Payment Authority over your debit card, cancel any Direct Debit, and withdraw their Open Banking authorisation. You shouldn’t actually have to change bank accounts!
Laura says
What happens if we haven’t had any email notification by this time next week? Guessing if emails are going out 7 days prior to payment, then last emails will be sent on 23rd?
a says
Any emails today? 🤪
Jay says
Hello can anyone help me out still waiting for the Email from money shop I have not heard anything I have send them email no response
Vijender says
Still no email for me. Originally scheduled to be concluded in October 2020 June 16th 2021 and I’ve not had any communication yet this year from ICL. “No reason to be concerned” you might say but with only 2 weeks left of their allotted time I am indeed, concerned.
Liz says
Like many l am still awaiting for that email. If we dont get that email by the end of June do l presume we wont be getting anything? Thankyou
Ceri Ann says
Liz I am still waiting as well. My redress was 2,590 so should get around £100. Just so discouraging that no emails today either. Does anyone know how late in the evening the last emails are sent out.? Getting really worried now
Liz says
Fingers crossed for us all !!
Suzie says
Still no email beginning to think I will be missed
Sops says
I’m sure you won’t , I’ve had nothing yet either and there’s still over a week before the cut off date so I’m sure we will hear next week.
Russell says
That’s me received my payment today but received no email from them at all. Last correspondence was my potential redress letter last year. Glad to be paid and finally move on.
Chris says
My redress of £186 arrived today, gutting as the amount was over £4K!!! Least it’s something. I had 8 loans with 118 some top ups. They agreed with 2 last ones so off to the FOS I go! On reading their recent reviews I don’t hold much hope
Steve says
Was sent a e-mail a while ago stating that may was payout but now reading it is this month June but so far not heard a thing a terrible redress service why is it taking so long to do this or are they just holding customers pittance back for as long as they can to get interest on the monies owed to people big companies with thousands of staff pay wages without dragging it out
Sara (Debt Camel) says
They are not getting any interest on the money.
Kelly says
I’ve just received this random email from BW Legal.Shall I just ignore it?
We understand that you have received notice of your dividend from Instant Cash Loans Ltd – in liquidation (“ICL”), in relation to historical lending by them for loans upheld as irresponsible lending within their Scheme of Arrangement.
The letter you have received may be confusing, stating that you have a balance owed to PRAC Financial Ltd (“PRAC”). For the sake of clarity, the point about PRAC in the dividend letter is generic. ICL do not know if you have an outstanding balance with PRAC Financial. The letter should therefore have indicated that you “may” have a balance due to PRAC for a loan that was sold to them, and if so what action you needed to take.
We can confirm that you have no balance due to PRAC and your case is closed.
We can also confirm that our client wishes to further support you within the Scheme of Arrangement and has processed a bureau deletion for these loan(s) with Equifax today. If you purchase your own bureau reports from Equifax in the next 7-10 days, you will see that any reporting of the above loans by PRAC has been deleted from your credit file.
If you receive free reporting, your file will not be updated until your next free monthly report, due to the timing of the reports from the credit reference agencies.
Please note that you do not need to contact us about this letter, the communication is for your information purposes only.
Yours sincerely,
BW Legal
Sara (Debt Camel) says
If you have no open debt at BW Legal I think you can safely ignore that. I suggest you don’t delete it though.

I just received the same email but still waiting for one from ICL 🙄

see my reply to Kelly above.
Karol says
It’s not point of calling them or sending an email as you only get automatic reply I phoned them this morning just to hear all payments have to be made by the end of June so we all should be getting our money soon
Neil says
Hi, so even if you’ve requested your bank cancel the CPA & tell them no payments to be made to SafetyNet they can still manage to take money from the account?
Sara (Debt Camel) says
not if you have also cancelled the direct debit if there is one. Open Banking access lets them look at your account but not (so far as I am aware) take a payment.
Neil says
I’m not sure there was a direct debit, they had open banking access which I thought had to be renewed every few months & I would have to give my agreement but they still seem to be able to take sums of money. They start with £100 or so then keep trying until they get something. Last time transferred £20 into the account & minutes later it was gone?
Sara (Debt Camel) says
I think they have a continuous payment authority over your debit card – phone up your bank and insist you want the CPA cancelled – your bank can do this.
E says
Tell your bank to cancel the CPA and make sure all future payments are cancelled not just the next one. Write or email safetynet to advise them you are cancelling it, by doing both you can claim any payments back if they manage to take anything.
Change all authorisation and log in codes for your accounts and turn off all permissions in open banking
Charlotte says
No email received yet from the money shop but have just received an email from BWlegal to say I don’t owe them anything and that they are writing the debt off of my credit file ( I paid this off last year anyway) but good to know it’s being removed from my credit file!!
Kate says
I had that message today – I have been receiving successive emails from PRAC, as I *do* have a balance (but it’s lower than the accepted amount of redress) so I’m hoping that they have done the decent thing, and written off the debt as it was found to have been unaffordable. I guess I will find out at some stage :-D
Claire says
Hi, I’m wondering if you can help at all please! I had an outstanding balance after redress of around £800, and for my debt management plan to go ahead I need a reference number of whoever has the debt now, I’ve called bw legal as I’ve heard they were sold to them, gave all 3 previous postcodes, and they have nothing on file matching any of my details…. Does it look like it’s been written off? Or is there another company it could have gone to?
Thanks!
Sara (Debt Camel) says
are you sure this debt was sold?
Claire says
I’m not sure, they told me my redress amount and what the outstanding balance was with that deducted, then I’ve not heard anything at all from them since… is it possible they’re still sending out updates for outstanding debts? :)
Thanks!
Sara (Debt Camel) says
I think you have to wait and see what they say about the balance. I doubt they will sell it to PRAC/BW Legal – those guys can’t be flavour of the month after causing a huge amount of aggro in the scheme…
Claire says
Ah that’s great, thanks!
Do you know if they have a time scale they have to do it by?
My debt management plan can’t start without knowing if it needs to be included, and I have just over half of my breathing space time left.
Is there an email that there taking queries on at all?
Sorry for all the questions! And thank you so much for all the help!
Sara (Debt Camel) says
How large is the balance?
Claire says
The remaining balance after redress is removed is £855 :(
Kevin Clements says
Hi received the same letter from b w legal what does it mean !No payout
Sara (Debt Camel) says
See reply to Kelly above

I received my email on Friday and my payment today. I haven’t heard from bw legal yet who I had a balance with so logged into my account with them to find that it now says no balance due and account closed. I’m of course happy to see this but a bit confused as I know bw legal balances were still meant to be due.

@Rlou I am in same situation – some reporting 6 days more recently but could be up to 7 days. If we are lucky maybe (maybe) earlier
Richard Eastland says
Has anyone know how many emails are sent each day
John says
Not enough. I have heard nothing at all. they originally tried to blag I had an outstanding balance with paydayuk and they would receive payment. I proved I had no balance due and they stated I shouldn’t receive payment. still nothing. Feel like I’m going to be the one that’s missed 😳
MARTIN says
Another former Silent watcher lol! I thought I’d be one of the 1st to be honest but no! I’m hoping I’m one of those where it appears in your account without the emails! But anyway greet to see people getting paid! The longer it takes, the closer to my regular payday so all in all it will make me feel richer on the day seeing as I live payday to payday like many do;)
John says
Becoming very frustrating. STILL HAD NOTHING. I know people are getting paid on here but everyone seems to be getting emails atleast. really feel like they are not sending it. I had to fight at first as they claimed I had outstanding debt to a lender so they would send my redress to them. I then proved this was paid in 2008! They then started I SHOULD (their wording) receive the redress amount. heard nothing since
Sara (Debt Camel) says
no, there are still people who have not yet had the email telling them what the payments will be.
John says
Do we think it is going to drag on past June or do you think I can be confident I will receive soon?
Sara (Debt Camel) says
So far as I know they are planning to have paid everyone by the end of the month. It is possible that some payments may need to be retried if they bounce back from the customer’s bank account.
Sops says
I think there’s plenty that’s not heard a thing , I’m still waiting too , can only assume it will come this week or next going off what they’ve told people , I do wonder though if it’s people that complained are being held back ? I disputed the balance they claimed I owed them they emailed a few weeks back agreeing with me , will just sit tight as if they are to pay all by end June emails will need to completed by 23/24 June.
Fred says
I’ve emailed them 4 times about disputing their email but they never reply.
Not sure if it’s worth calling them.
I am getting pretty fed up with it to be honest.
Sops says
I think we all are Fred , from what I’ve read there’s no point in calling as you will just get the answer “ payments to be made by end June “ whole thing is a farce to be fair but I can see light at the end of the tunnel !
Cece says
I don’t think so, I never complained or disputed mine and I’m still waiting
Lloyd says
Take it easy its not the end of June yet, complain if you have not recieved your money on the 1st July
gina davies says
not heard any think yet no email no letter can you help
David says
After watching quietly in the background for months and waiting patiently for my redress I’m becoming more and more frustrated the longer this goes on, I keep seeing posts saying ‘be patient’, ‘it’s coming’ and ‘there’s no reason to believe everyone won’t be paid by the end of june’! I’m sorry but there’s every reason to believe everyone won’t be paid in the next 13 days! They’ve constantly moved the goalpost over the last 18months ignoring deadline after deadline and just extending it. The only reason I’m posting this is for all the people worried, anxious and fed up, you have every right to moan and complain, they’ve taken the p**s for nearly 2 years! Don’t feel these are doing you a favour by paying you, it’s what your owed, it’s your money. I’m happy for everyone who has already received yours, you deserve it but don’t patronise us that haven’t. Let us moan! 😁
Claire Davis says
Spot on David! I’m so anxious and frustrated, I do actually really need the money so I’m desperately checking each day and it’s doing my mental health no good whatsoever :(
Matthew says
Plenty haven’t, just chill and wait
Maria says
Hi Ive had a payment go into my account from instant cash loans and no email. I will feted if this is a refund as I haven’t used any loans companies for years. Any advice?
KarenH says
Hi,
Just a thought…could they be paying out in alphabetical order do you think? My last name starts with S & not heard anything as yet!
Aaron says
It’s totally random it seems. My brother and I (same surname and initial) took out our first loans a few days apart. I had my money early June, he hasn’t had the email even.
Sam says
I’ve just spoken to BW Legal as I couldn’t log onto my account. I can’t access it anymore as they have reduced my current owed balance to zero and closed down the account. I had £170 left of my last loan with PaydayUK so that’s a slight bonus and any negative markers will be removed from my credit file which I’m happy with. I’m guessing that’ll be the end of that and any particular interest on that loan won’t be refunded.
Sara (Debt Camel) says
yes there is no way you will get any money back from PRAC. A write off is as good as it will get.
Allan C says
Got my email on Monday. Redress amount £ 1747.21. Paid £ 75.30
Had notification from my bank it’s due to hit my account tomorrow. Better than a kick in the teeth I guess.
Amy says
Seems a distinct lack of emails today and yesterday, no rush in them to be finished by end of June!!
Mark says
Still nothing. Just radio silence.
We are nearly in July. This is getting frustratingly ridiculous now.
Pete says
We’re barely past the middle of June buddy :) Won’t be long now, keep the faith.
A says
I thought I was going to be on the last day…but I finally got an email on Monday..just keep checking the bank
Chrisbt100 says
Yeah definitely frustrating, I mean how hard is it to
Send out emails?? Even if your working from home can’t see that being a big problem??!! Out of all of the schemes I have been involved in this one takes the trophy for the worst one yet!!! Hoping to hear very soon though watch me be the last one!! Lol
