Quick overview

Provident’s Scheme of Arrangement is now in the final stages.

The Scheme was proposed because Provident could not afford to carry on paying full refunds to customers winning affordability complaints. The Financial Ombudsman was upholding 75% of complaints against Provident.

The FCA, Provident’s regulator, said it did not approve of the Scheme. But as Provident has stopped providing doorstep loans, the FCA did not object to the Scheme in court.

It started officially on 5 August 2021 after it was approved in court. The deadline for claims was the end of February 2022.

Provident has assessed claims and informed customers of their decision. The large majority of appeals have been held.

Provident is making payments to bank accounts or sending cheques:

  • it is paying 4.2557p in the £;
  • so if your redress was £1,000, you will receive about £42;
  • a final letter will be uploaded to your portal account setting out the payment;
  • the first bank payments will be arriving in accounts on Tuesday 5 July.

Here is confirmation from one reader (see the comments below for others):

FUNDS PENDING!!!

Hi all, I’m new to this to thread but just thought I would give an update.

I have a Monzo account, it is showing my Bacs credit as going into my account on Monday, for most people with standard accounts this means you will be be paid Tuesday 🙂

I can also confirm it is 4.2557% as stated.

Glad it’s eventually been sorted.

But no-one should assume they will get their payment next week.

They may be going out in batches. And in any mass payment, some of them fail. Do not plan your July finances on the assumption that you will get paid early in the month.

PThe Provident Scheme is paying out 4.2557p in the £

Which loans were covered by the Scheme?

More than 4 million people were given a loan by Provident that comes under the Scheme.

These loans were given between 6 April 2007 and 17 December 2020.

The loans came from four different brands:

  • Provident – often called “doorstep loans” or “home credit”;
  • Satsuma payday loans;
  • Greenwood – another doorstep loan brand that hasn’t been used since 2014;
  • Glo – a very small guarantor loan brand.

If you have an affordability complaint about Vanquis or Moneybarn, these complaints are NOT included in the Scheme. You can still make a normal affordability complaint and get a full refund.

The definition of “unaffordable”

A loan is only “affordable” if you could repay it on time and still be able to pay your other debts, bills and living expenses.

You may have paid the loan on time, but it may still have been unaffordable.

If paying Provident left you so short of money you had to borrow more or you got behind with bills then it was “unaffordable”.

If you had several loans without a break between them, then Provident should have realised you were trapped in a cycle of borrowing and that these expensive loans were not affordable. Even a single loan can be unaffordable if it is large.

How much will you be paid?

The next stage is for Provident to divide up the £50 million in the Scheme between the people who have had their complaints upheld.

Customers who made a claim have been told which loans have been upheld and what the total redress for these loans is. You will be paid a percentage of this redress number, not all of it.

When the Scheme was voted on, many people thought they were being told that the payout would be 10%, or 10p in the £. I said at the time that that looked unlikely and it could only have been based on an unusually low number of people making a claim.

For several months Provident has been quoting a range, saying:

Based on the claims that we have received to date, we estimate that the pence in the pound rate of compensation to be paid to each customer will be between 4-6p.

Now it is known that Provident will only be paying 4.2557p in the £.

A final letter will be added to your portal account setting out what you will be paid.

Credit records will be cleaned

In other schemes and Administrations, some people say getting rid of a default was the most important result for them. Not the small cash refund!

For upheld loans,  any defaults or missed payments will be removed from your credit record.

This clean up will be done at the end, when they can do everyone’s together. This is very annoying if you want to make a mortgage application, but there is nothing you can do to speed it up.

If your credit record is not cleaned in this process, there will probably be no-one to complain to about this. But there is process for resolving this sort of problem, see Correct credit records by “suppressing” them if the lender has disappeared.

Current loans

Loans that were sold to a debt collector

If your loan was sold to a debt collector, Provident is trying to get this settled. This seems to be taking some time, for example with Lowell saying they haven’t been given the right information from Provident. Several people are complaining about these in the comments below.

Loans that hadn’t been sold were written off in December 2021

In December Provident announced that it was no longer collecting any payments for existing loans:

There is nothing you need to do.  You can stop making payments on your outstanding loans owed to PPC and if your payments are taken by the Continuous Payment Authority (CPA), we will stop these for you. Any payments made after 31st December 2021 will be paid back to you.

If you’re in arrears or didn’t pay your loan within the time we agreed when you got your loan, we’ll update your file with our Credit Reference Agency to show the balance as zero and partially settled.

Your credit record is being changed to show that the loan is partially settled or partially satisfied.

If you are a Provident or Satsuma customer, you should have been told about this by email or letter.

That is a pathetic payout

Provident is a successful company with the profitable Vanquis and Moneybarn brands which are still in business. It is a disgrace that the regulator has allowed them to structure their business in a way that has permitted Provident to abandon all its doorstep lending customers and not pay them their proper redress.

If you are feeling mad that Provident has got away with paying you so little, this is the time to look at whether you can make other affordability complaints, not just for loans but for other types of credit.

I have a separate page for each sort, as they need slightly different template letters to complain:

  • refunds for large loans, including Moneybarn and other car finance;
  • refunds from catalogues and credit cards such as Vanquis;
  • refunds from overdrafts
  • Morses scheme
  • refunds from other doorstep lenders;
  • refunds from Lending Stream, Safetynet Credit and other payday lenders.

    Hi,

    I have had my payment this morning. I have also had a message in my portal from the adjudicator. I have already had my appeal not upheld, this letter says they have upheld my appeal and overturned provident a decision. The most important thing for me was having the late payments removed from my credit file (although extra money before school holidays is nice) so I am pleased the decision has been over turned. So others may also have their appeals looked at again.

            Told i would receive cheque first week in july. Adding bank details was not an option for myself. Allegient have sent me 2 invoices for same account.
            Why do.people who did not have the option have to wait a lot longer for payout, given it will be more time before cheque clears. This money will be accruing interest for provident, so what happens to it?

            No interest is being earned. This a problem of administration and bureaucracy, not deliberate delays to make more money.

            Hi Gavin I already claimed against provident through allegiant and gave them 30%. This time round I did not ask allegiant to help as I entered the scheme myself unaware they also did. Now they are asking 30% again. Can they do this? And if we don’t pay them what will happen. I’m worried about my credit score being affected more than anything else. Thanks

        I wonder how many other accounts put loans on that were not folkss,specially if not got proof to say otherwise ,Just glad I had all paperwork from 2011 showing monies owed to which was then paid in full ;I even sent them proof of DMP payments going out to them each month..So now just gotta wait for Provy again now to get figures right what I’m owed .

    Good to see so many are reporting payments arriving today.

    My adjudicator overturn came too late in the process for me to provide bank details so I am expecting a cheque. The only guide I’ve had is ‘in July’.

    Like a few others I am more interested in credit file updates though. Currently no portal update to confirm final amount and credit file update process so a bit more of a wait for us it seems.

    Well money received in Nationwide Account , no letter as yet. At least it brings a sort of end to this farce credit file cleaning expected.

    Awful scheme with low pay-out , crap customer service ,confusing paperwork , non sensical decisions, awful and not impartial “independent adjudicator” with no rationale . The FCA or the courts really need to supervise how these schemes operate once approved.

    Provident have run rings around the FCA with this.

Just got email to say they have updated ortal and like tink85 above it is from adjudicator as I appealed in may. Again they have partial upheld and Said provident would write to me. I know they seem to be winding everything down but do you think they have held anything back for winning appeals. Well done to all of those who finally have received payments from these sharks. I unfortunately, am not one of the fortunate ones.
    Out of 9 loans one was deemed unaffordable & this debt had been sold to Lowell.Solicitors. It resulted in me obtaining g a CCJ which still has an outstanding balance of £4k.
    Just spoken to Provident this morning & they have advised that debts sold to Lowell Solicitors have not been settled and any monies outstanding are still owed to Lowell.
    My redress outcome stated that as the compensation due to me was less than the outstanding balance, I would not receive any redress. This loan had been sold to Lowell, so there was no outstanding balance owing to Provident. Surely, Provident should at least give me this redress amount or transfer the sum to Lowell to reduce my debt with them ?
    I feel as though I have lost out twice to these sharks. Firstly, they sold me an unaffordable loan & now they have got away with paying me no compensation. I am now still left with a CCJ & a £4k debt to repay.
    I did appeal the redress but this was not upheld by the adjudicator. I will escalate my appeal to the Financial Ombudsman but I’m not expecting a favourable outcome.

      I hope this is not true I to had a loan bought by lowell solicitors which ended up in a ccj this was deemed unaffordable. And after contacting provident over this they have told me this loan will be closed ( soon) and any monies paid from august last year will be repaid to me by lowell solicitors, has this been a blatant lie!!! As account with lowell solicitors still active as of today and they continue to tell me as of yet they have heard nothing from provident regarding the closing of the account.

          Did your redress statement mention an outstanding balance sold to Lowell ? Mine showed an outstanding balance (which was much lower than the actual) but no there was no mention of Lowell. I’m just wondering if the financial administrators, did not realise my outstanding account had been sold to Lowell.

            No I compared all the loans that provident deemed unaffordable and the one they sold to lowell was on there .
            On provident portal said my outstanding balance was zero this must be because lowell bought the balance from provident but still owe lowell solicitors over £1800!!!! And just checked my online lowell account & account still live and still has the outstanding balance, and lowell threading bailiff action if I fail to keep making my monthly payments.

          It’s ridiculous being told even though provident have said the loan sold to lowell was unaffordable lowell can still make me repay the full outstanding balance as lowell are now the legal owners of the debt lowell are very rude, aggressive and VERY unhelpful!! And Having none of it all I keep getting told is it’s lowell debt now not providents.

    I really don’t understand why a lot of people on this site are chasing payment or disappointed. I received my £95 today did not think about it once, was surprised when I got a letter to claim as I was just happy I paid if my loans ten years ago. I still made my claim but never chased as didn’t expect anything.
    However we all knew at the time we were desperate for these loans or else we would have gone to our main banks or got an overdraft instead!! We are partially to blame for taking out these loans while we desperate myself included – but people serious stop being greedy we all put ourself in this position

    Can anyone explain why defaults, late payments etc are being removed from people’s credit reports but not CCJ’s. Surely if a CCJ was given in reference to an unaffordable loan this should be removed too ? Also, why are Lowell closing & refunding payments for some debts but not all ?

      Removing a CCJ is a court procedure, it isn’t something that a firm can simply correct by informing the credit reference agencies.
      Yes, CCJs should be removed. They were in the Money Shop scheme. Amigo has said they will be in its Scheme.

      So far as I can tell, Lowell has started after a slow start (caused by lack of information from Provident) to behave reasonably except where the complaints were passed to their Solicitors. I don’t see why that should make a difference and I hope Lowell and Lowell Solicitors get their act together and sort this out. If this isn’t resolved ina couple of weeks i will suggest what else people can do.

        In the event that Lowell do not close/reduce my Provident debt, once I’ve repaid the debt in full, can I put a claim into them to recover the interest + the 8% redress. The loan has been deemed unaffordable so surely I should be entitled to the same compensation from the debt purchaser.

    I am due to receive around £180 but nothing has been laid into my account despite the fact that I did put this on the portal (now seems to have disappeared the bank details)
    Actually did mine through a claims company (alliegient) and they have already sent me an invoice for 30% of the claim. That aside I would like to express my absolute disgust at the ombudsman for the low payout. What a complete and utter waste of public funding they really are and I see no point in them receiving any further funding. Same as the energy regulators they are another waste of space being totally ineffective in every single way
    Back to the payout I assume that they will now pay me by cheque although the email from the claims company did state that the payouts are hing made in stages. Anyone else had similar?

      When/how did you get your invoice from Allegiant? I have received payment but am waiting on my invoice coming in but haven’t heard from them as yet. Seems a waste as I submitted my claim with them and the following month they had put a stop on claims to go through this process and I had to resubmit everything with Provident anyway. Seems a waste of 30% of our claims.

        It came via email. I have also phoned them today and despite the fee being high at 30% I initially did all of this whilst I was not particularly well and couldn’t be bothered to do it myself
        They do not expect the fee until I’ve been paid by another round of bank transfers or cheque and are quite relaxed about it all. They don’t get access to as and when the payments are made they said today all they know is it can be throughout the month of July so it’s all a waiting game I suppose. Noticed in a financial post in one of the newspapers that provident are now back in profit what a surprise and allegiance agreed with me that any such profits should be paid to claimants too until this is all sorted but that’s about as likely as me flying to the moon on Concorde next week!!
        The ombudsman also to reiterate are a complete and utter waste of space

      Can’t help with adjudicator part but from what I understand lowell is “reducing balances” in the same way provident are where if you’re redress claim is more than your balance currently it’ll wipe it out. If your redress claim is less than your current balance it’ll be reduced but not wiped. So if I owed 1.5k and my redress is 9k it’ll be wiped. If I owe 9k and ny redress is 1.5k it’ll be reduced.

      That’s how j understand it anyways, provident are just taking their time at updating lowell and even with me sending lowell copies of letters they won’t do anything until they hear from provident

    For those who appealed

    I just got off the phone to provident because I recieved payment and my adjudication letter via portal saying my claim had been upheld in part, then last night I recieved a letter from provident regarding payment.

    I was confused because I thought the provi letter was the outcome. It turns out this is just a receipt of the payment i recieved from provi.

    He explained I now wait for the letter from provident which will explain what the adjudicator has decided. He said all payments were sent out last friday so the letter everyone recieved so far from provi is a reciept confirming your compensation payment so far!

    Hopefully this should clear a few things up with people just as confused as I am

    Had five provident loans after the year 2007, had more prior to that, but as we know it’s from 2007 they are dealing with. Out of the five, the whole five were ticked unaffordable, so they upheld.
    In my case it was one after the other, so once completed I taken another.
    I’m baffled on the one account number as it states they’ve offset it as there was a balance owed of £176, I never owed anything as I only taken out a new one after completing the previous loan.
    So they’ve deducted the £176 from the whole claim of one thousand and a few hundred as if I owed the £176.
    I understand it’s only so much being paid out but can’t understand where I owed the £176 .
    If that’s the case I wouldn’t have taken out another loan after that one.
    Or have I misunderstood on how they’ve done this? Cheers

        I had a similar issue in that the amount they stated was outstanding was completely wrong. I did appeal this, but because I also appealed about the loans they deemed affordable, the adjudicators only looked at this point & not the outstanding balance. When I queried this with Provident, they advised the adjudicator could only look at one of my reasons for appeal, even though there were 3 different appeal sections on the form on the portal. The way this whole thing has been dealt with is very, very shady !

        Hi Sara, All my loans were unaffordable in the end after I had been given an offer and appealed. I too had £328 supposed outstanding loans, Provident sent me the details of the 2 loans which were taken out a couple of moths before I made myself bankrupt in Jan 2009. They were given a copy of the Bankruptcy Cert and someone wrote all of the outstanding loans at the time off in May 2009 not that I was paying anything.

        I appealed again and it went to the Adjudicator and they partially upheld the claim, basically saying I owed £328 despite the proof I didn’t. I was paid anyway on Tuesday. How do these people think they breach a High Court Order ?

        I’ve given up now as it not even £20.

        Thanks to you and all other posters for their help.

          I am afraid that it is normal for refunds to be set off against debts that no longer exist because of insolvency. This happened with PPI a lot.

            I guess so. If it was more than say £50 I would have contacted the Official Receiver at the Insolvency Service to see what they say, but it’s only about £15 I guess I will just cut and run with the big payment and overpayment refund.

            It’s disgraceful that they can ignore a High Court Order especially when they sent me a full list of all my loans with Provi since 2007 including all the dates etc which were not on the first letter I got through the scheme portal Those debts of £328 are clearly shown in their own documents as being written off and includes the person’s name who did it.

            Cheers again Sara.

    Hi,

    Not sure if can even be answered, but worth a shot!

    Basically I’ve had my provident personal credit complaint upheld and they amount they owe me is over £14k, but the amount they paid me is £600… disgusting right?

    However, I currently have car finance with them with more than £14k outstanding. I’ve checked the contract and it specifically states ‘moneybarn – part of provident financial group including provident personal credit etc).

    So my question is, would it be possible to use my right to offset what they owe me in compensation against provident personal credit against an outstanding debt I have moneybarn car finance?

    Reaching for the stars I know! I’ve already put in an affordability complaint against moneybarn which they have rejected, so I’m about to take my complaint to the ombudsman and I don’t know if it’s worth what they owe me v what I owe them and request an offset to redress the balance in my favour.

    Thanks

    Gemma

      Disgusting indeed.
      I don’t think they will offset this.
      I mean you can ask, but there is no legal reason why they should. (Ethics of course doesn’t come into it.)
      So if you ask them, give a simple 1 week time limit after which you will send your MB case to the Ombudsman.

        Thanks Sara,

        Worth a shot & I guess no harm in pointing it out to the ombudsman that they are Pershing me for a debt whilst they owe me over £14k!

        Criminal what they get away with.

        Thanks so much for Debt Camel. It’s been so helpful.

    On my letter it said that they have contacted Lowell and they will refund any overpayments due. Should I expect an overpayment at all if I cleared off the debt in full or not?

    Just a bit confused.

    Do we have an idea when we can go about disputing credit files to have records removed? i would like to have a provident record suppressed but this will need to wait till there is no-one available on the Satsuma end to respond. i suspect this will be in a month or so?
    Thanks in advance.

      I’m personally waiting until they’ve cleaned Credit Files for the missold loans and then giving it a couple of extra months.

      I do worry however that since Provident the parent company is still going the suppression request might not work.

    Why have Provident been allowed to act as their own administrators for this scheme ? They are truly inept. I have now spoken to 4 different customer service advisers regarding my debt which was sold to Lowell & everyone has told me a different story. Surely if the high court agreed to this scheme they should have stated that an independant body administer it & not allow Provident to turn this into the administration fiasco that they have. I’ve lost all trust in our judicial system.

I already had escalated with lowell and got nowhere so I thought right I’ll ring them. Rang lowell got through to a very polite and helpful girl who said there is a pinned notice saying the account had been identified as part of the SOA and balances/adjustments would be made in due course. This doesn’t show anywhere on my online account so those that are purely checking online give them a ring and see if it’s the same for you. If I hadn’t rang I’d have assumed no communication.
