Quick overview
Provident’s Scheme of Arrangement is now in the final stages.
The Scheme was proposed because Provident could not afford to carry on paying full refunds to customers winning affordability complaints. The Financial Ombudsman was upholding 75% of complaints against Provident.
The FCA, Provident’s regulator, said it did not approve of the Scheme. But as Provident has stopped providing doorstep loans, the FCA did not object to the Scheme in court.
It started officially on 5 August 2021 after it was approved in court. The deadline for claims was the end of February 2022.
Provident has assessed claims and informed customers of their decision. The large majority of appeals have been held.
Provident is making payments to bank accounts or sending cheques:
- it is paying 4.2557p in the £;
- so if your redress was £1,000, you will receive about £42;
- a final letter will be uploaded to your portal account setting out the payment;
- the first bank payments will be arriving in accounts on Tuesday 5 July.
Here is confirmation from one reader (see the comments below for others):
FUNDS PENDING!!!
Hi all, I’m new to this to thread but just thought I would give an update.
I have a Monzo account, it is showing my Bacs credit as going into my account on Monday, for most people with standard accounts this means you will be be paid Tuesday
I can also confirm it is 4.2557% as stated.
Glad it’s eventually been sorted.
But no-one should assume they will get their payment next week.
They may be going out in batches. And in any mass payment, some of them fail. Do not plan your July finances on the assumption that you will get paid early in the month.
Which loans were covered by the Scheme?
More than 4 million people were given a loan by Provident that comes under the Scheme.
These loans were given between 6 April 2007 and 17 December 2020.
The loans came from four different brands:
- Provident – often called “doorstep loans” or “home credit”;
- Satsuma payday loans;
- Greenwood – another doorstep loan brand that hasn’t been used since 2014;
- Glo – a very small guarantor loan brand.
If you have an affordability complaint about Vanquis or Moneybarn, these complaints are NOT included in the Scheme. You can still make a normal affordability complaint and get a full refund.
The definition of “unaffordable”
A loan is only “affordable” if you could repay it on time and still be able to pay your other debts, bills and living expenses.
You may have paid the loan on time, but it may still have been unaffordable.
If paying Provident left you so short of money you had to borrow more or you got behind with bills then it was “unaffordable”.
If you had several loans without a break between them, then Provident should have realised you were trapped in a cycle of borrowing and that these expensive loans were not affordable. Even a single loan can be unaffordable if it is large.
How much will you be paid?
The next stage is for Provident to divide up the £50 million in the Scheme between the people who have had their complaints upheld.
Customers who made a claim have been told which loans have been upheld and what the total redress for these loans is. You will be paid a percentage of this redress number, not all of it.
When the Scheme was voted on, many people thought they were being told that the payout would be 10%, or 10p in the £. I said at the time that that looked unlikely and it could only have been based on an unusually low number of people making a claim.
For several months Provident has been quoting a range, saying:
Based on the claims that we have received to date, we estimate that the pence in the pound rate of compensation to be paid to each customer will be between 4-6p.
Now it is known that Provident will only be paying 4.2557p in the £.
A final letter will be added to your portal account setting out what you will be paid.
Credit records will be cleaned
In other schemes and Administrations, some people say getting rid of a default was the most important result for them. Not the small cash refund!
For upheld loans, any defaults or missed payments will be removed from your credit record.
This clean up will be done at the end, when they can do everyone’s together. This is very annoying if you want to make a mortgage application, but there is nothing you can do to speed it up.
If your credit record is not cleaned in this process, there will probably be no-one to complain to about this. But there is process for resolving this sort of problem, see Correct credit records by “suppressing” them if the lender has disappeared.
Current loans
Loans that were sold to a debt collector
If your loan was sold to a debt collector, Provident is trying to get this settled. This seems to be taking some time, for example with Lowell saying they haven’t been given the right information from Provident. Several people are complaining about these in the comments below.
Loans that hadn’t been sold were written off in December 2021
In December Provident announced that it was no longer collecting any payments for existing loans:
There is nothing you need to do. You can stop making payments on your outstanding loans owed to PPC and if your payments are taken by the Continuous Payment Authority (CPA), we will stop these for you. Any payments made after 31st December 2021 will be paid back to you.
If you’re in arrears or didn’t pay your loan within the time we agreed when you got your loan, we’ll update your file with our Credit Reference Agency to show the balance as zero and partially settled.
Your credit record is being changed to show that the loan is partially settled or partially satisfied.
If you are a Provident or Satsuma customer, you should have been told about this by email or letter.
That is a pathetic payout
Provident is a successful company with the profitable Vanquis and Moneybarn brands which are still in business. It is a disgrace that the regulator has allowed them to structure their business in a way that has permitted Provident to abandon all its doorstep lending customers and not pay them their proper redress.
If you are feeling mad that Provident has got away with paying you so little, this is the time to look at whether you can make other affordability complaints, not just for loans but for other types of credit.
I have a separate page for each sort, as they need slightly different template letters to complain:
- refunds for large loans, including Moneybarn and other car finance;
- refunds from catalogues and credit cards such as Vanquis;
- refunds from overdrafts
- Morses scheme
- refunds from other doorstep lenders;
- refunds from Lending Stream, Safetynet Credit and other payday lenders.

Jo says
Nope no communication at all.
Kirsty says

Sue says
Is that the final outcome of payment, or will there be more to come percentage wise , when they finish
Stephen says

Cameron says

Zoe says

Chelsie says

Susan Knowles says
I had something way back in may saying I could get between£245.00 and £345.00 but nothing else
Amanda Sakly says
Me too. I keep wondering if that’s the actual amount or if I will receive 4p for every one of those pounds.
Sara (Debt Camel) says
No, that range is after applying the small percentage being paid.
Donna thomas says
I’m with Nationwide can’t see any payments coming in anybody had a payment?
Sam says
I’m also wit nationwide, I sent them a secure message asking if I had any pending payments and the reply said they couldn’t check this, so I’m in the dark also. It’s good that others are saying their payments are pending, hopefully we will all get paid this week.

Graham jessup says

Lisa says
I’m with nationwide and they can’t check to see if anything is pending, which is a shame, nave noticed they have switched comments off on the message portal, hopefully it’s a good sign. Would. Been nice if they sent us all a message saying if we are getting payment this week. The suspense is to much lol
Darren says

Vicky says
I get paid Mondays and Tuesdays and it always hits my bank the night before without fail 🙂
Kay says
This is true. I’m with Santander and my money always goes in the night before x
Jacqueline says
Hi Vicky It’s the same for me. My pension due on a Tuesday is always in Monday night. How did you see your provident pending payment?
Steven says
I can also confirm this is Santander’s method as I can check my account around the same times the night before and see the payment in my account .
I’ll confirm here aswell if mine comes in this week.
Joe says
Is anyone else having problems with lowell solicitors refusing to accept the loan they bought has been deemed unaffordable?? The provident portal says all debt collectors/purchase’s had been informed but lowell are having none of it saying they know absolutely nothing regarding the matter!! And I must continue to make my monthly repayments of £40 or risk further action, And all provident portal keeps saying to me is they will be informed soon, when portal says it was months ago so FRUSTRATED.
Zoe says
Hi joe tell them to put your account on hold till it’s sorted they asked me if I wanted to do it , mine is now cleared balance zero and I got a email from confirming it and I’m waiting on money from Lowell what I paid from last august .
shaun stringer says
Hi Zoe,
Is this with Portfolio or Solicitors as im on the phone whilst writing this to the solicitor side and they point blank dtating they know nothhing and im still legally responsible for paying.
They are a dangerous company and a bunch of rats
Thanks
Zoe says
Hi joe I dealt with lowell they were having none of it at the beginning till I sent a copy of the letter from provident even then still argued with me but said could put account on hold but I said no coz I pay £1 a mth so I left it then checked my lowell account online and seen it was closed balance zero so I phoned lowell who said it was a good Will gesture which I replied no it’s not coz your suppose to be writing the debts off as there classed as unaffordable anyway said I don’t owe them and what money I’ve paid since last august I will get back and they emailed me to confirm everything so good luck try not worry
Ashleigh Oakes says
Hi mine is with lowell portfolio and they’re also saying they’ve heard nothing so balance is due. They have put on hold for 9 weeks and I’ve asked provident numerous times when they will be informed and first time (30th june) I got told by end of June so I replied saying its the 30th of June and nothing then just got random different answers off provident since then, telling me about when payments were due (didn’t ask), telling me when credit files would he sorted (didn’t ask) but still my lowell account is balance outstanding. My sisters was sorted a few weeks back now but mine hasn’t any update at all.
Joe says
Hi yes mine is also with lowell solicitors checked my online account with them this morning and it’s still live!!! The man I spoke earlier today from Lowell solicitors who was very rude and said exactly the same they have had absolutely no information from provident about the account being unaffordable and my payments MUST continue as normal!!!! And the fact I have confirmation from provident to prove this unaffordability means absolutely nothing until they hear directly from provident, all provident keep telling me is this will be sorted shortly!!!
Zoe says
Hi joe it’s been a nightmare getting it sorted but defo don’t pay no more money coz they will only have to give it you back and I’m still waiting for mine off lowell even though they have closed the account all this should of been straight forward but it has been dragged out I would tell them you want it on hold till it’s sorted out .
Julie says
Hi Joe
My loans were passed to Lowell and in redress it said they had agreed to write it off was then getting emails to say I still had to make payments but then noticed account was closed so emailed them for confirmation and was told the account was closed and no more payments need to paid. This was just last week so could be yours is in the process of being sorted. Good luck 👍
Toni says
I think lowell and lowell solicitors are 2 dif parts as I am with lowell and the gentleman I spoke to was ever so helpful, acc closed and getting refund for payments made after Aug 2021 but others have said lowell solicitors are being a pain.i hope you get it sorted x
Pol says
Hi, mine was still open with lowell yesterday but today it is showing as zero balance account closed
Kelz says
Don’t pay them anything else … all payments to provident that was still being paid provident have given back
Joe says
The debt resulted in a ccj and there saying if I fail to continue to make repayments it will result in bailiff action, they have refused to put account on hold and won’t except a reduced repayment, stating the debt will take longer to clear!!.
Julie says
Has anyone received a payment into a Barclays account/
Sara (Debt Camel) says
no one has yet received any money. A few people can see pending payments – that isnt possible with a Barclays account
Zoe says
Hi Sara what about NatWest I can’t see anything pending on mine .
Sara (Debt Camel) says
You can’t see nothing pending with Natwest
Charlotte says
I have received an email today saying the payment will start to hit accounts on the 5th July
Charlotte says
They have confirmed today should start to hit accounts on 5th July
Julie says
I have just waited for an hour on the phone to speak to them. I was told that the last of the payments are being made today so it just depends how long your bank takes to process it.
Graham jessup says
Is this not illegal by not telling us the precentage first and not even updating the portal and just issuing payments out first
Sara (Debt Camel) says
It’s certainly not good practice, but illegal? Not so far as i know.
Graham jessup says
It’s starting to make my blood 🩸 blood boil why should provident get away with bad practice.
Sara (Debt Camel) says
They are a commercial organisation that made a commercial decision to screw millions of their old customers – why do they care if you end up hating them?
And they have got away with this because the regulator failed to regulate them properly to prevent the mis-selling, failed to make them hold enough capital to settle complaints properly, turned a blind eye to their very poor complaint handling, and allowed them to get away with setting up this scheme while still continuing in business with other profitable regulated companies.
Gord says
The FCA are still investigating them for not doing the appropriate check hope the get a big fine
Joanne says
As anyone heard when people will start getting cheques as I didn’t have the option to put my bank details in
Sara (Debt Camel) says
Other people have been told you should get them in the first two weeks in July.
Charlotte says
I got told last week it will be 1st week in July
Julie says
They told me today that they are starting to send them out on Wednesday and should all be posted by Friday.
Carla says
My compensation is between £580 to £885 what should I expect
Vicky says
About £617 🙂
Carla says
Many thanks
Sheila says
Just got an email reply back Re payments :
Thank you for your email.
We are currently in the process of dispersing all compensation payments.
We expect bank transfers to hit banks on 5 July, although this may vary depending on your bank.
We will start issuing cheques on 5 July and expect these to arrive within the first two weeks of July.
We will confirm the final amount at the same time the payment is issued.
Thank you for your patience.
Kind regards,
Hannah Harman – McCaffrey

I had to make a Provident claim on behalf of my 85 year old mother as she was not savvy enough to do the claim process herself.
Although she is due just over £1000 in her bank, which will help her greatly, there is another issue I’d like to mention. Her claim shows that her claim was for just over £26000. It totally beggars belief that this door step lender was able to accumulate such profits from extortionate interest practices for such a long period of time. Especially against a pensioner over years and years. I just wish I knew about it sooner.
Like I say it’s good that people are getting some small compensation. However part of me feels it would have been better if this company had went the same way as Quickquid, Wonga etc. I feel that they have kind of got away with it. £50million pay out sounds a lot but I wonder how much profit this company has made in its time. A £26k claim by an 85year old and I’m sure there are thousands more. I actually also claimed for my brother as he wasn’t up to it either. He’s due slightly more than my mother as his claim totalled over £36k. 😱
Sara (Debt Camel) says
They have indeed got away with it.
They have made a large fortune from the poorest and most vulnerable people in the UK for decades.
Tracy says
I agree, My representive always used scribble down answers for me to say when voice recording my many loan applications. Say X amount for this, X for that! Shocking really thinking back. Fingers crossed for everyone we get our payouts soon. I haven’t commentated till now but have found this thread really helpful over the past couple of weeks. Sara you have been very helpful with your advice and so have many others! Thankyou All xx
Sandra says
I waited to get through on telephone was told money would be in my Halifax by tomorrow 5th but not received anything from provident
sarah says

Yes I’m afraid to say it’s the same old questions expectant of the same old answers some of us wouid be going on holiday if we got paid the full amount
Geraint says
Is anyone still waiting for a response from the adjuicator ? They have until the 9th to give me a response but not heard anything back yet! Anyone else in same boat?
Sara (Debt Camel) says
Yes there are a few. I think you will be paid an amount based on the original decision now and be paid extra if that is then increased.
Paula says
I was awaiting a response from adjudicator and chased it last week to be told decision was unchanged. If I didn’t message them on portal I would never have known.
Geraint says
Ok, i might message them and see what response i get.
Ally says
Geraint I’m still waiting to hear from Adjudicator, my 60 days ends the 9th also, emailed them last week also see what’s going on..heard nothing back .
K fletcher says
I’ve not even had an offer can anyone offer any advice on what I should do I keep phoning up and they are useless saying get a manger to call me this has been going on since the may
Diane says
Hiya,
I’d definitely chase them up by sending an email, tell them your aware that many you know of have received their decisions and now awaiting payment. Tell them you’ve heard nothing at all and will appreciate an email update.
That’s what I done and I finally received an upheld decision last week. They sent my decision by email as I get issues logging into my portal.
Good luck!
Zoe Clark says
Hi, my compensation is between £97 and £145.49. How much will I get please x
Vicky says

Steven says
Not much more than £97 i’d say £100 at the most.
Kelly says

Robert says

Ashley says
I’m worried now. I submitted account details but haven’t had a letter on the portal. Does this mean I won’t receive payment tomorrow? I’m with TSB so can’t see nothing pending
Gary Boyd says
I would say putting the money in is an easier and quicker way than having to send each individual a msg saying how much their gonna get,it could happen that you’ll get your compensation before you get a msg
Mike says
My portal hasn’t been updated like some peoples now have. Is there any people out there who can see their amount pending but also don’t have any updates in their portal?
I am with Barclays so can’t see what goes in until it happens but just wondering if the Portal updates are completely random and to see if people who have amounts pending also don’t have a portal update… if that makes sense!
Phil says
I’m with Barclays too. Have 2 claims (myself and my mum) my portal now has a letter with amount I’ll receive but my mums doesn’t. I’ve just logged on to both straight after one an other

You should get slightly more than the lower amount they gave and it should go in your bank over this next few days – midnight tonight at the earliest.
N list says
No portal update for me and as I’m bank with Barclays I can’t see any pending payment. Reading through the comments seems a pattern is emerging with barclays and no portal message. Well not going to miss something I never had 🙄
